Letter to Blog Readers

Dear blog readers,

I'm so sorry that I’ve been MIA with personal blogs for so long. Life has been a wild and amazing ride which some of you may need Dramamine for before I ever decide to share it. You have been on my mind blog readers, so I have continued to share books which I think will interest you, because they interest me. And givaways – who doesn’t like a giveaway.

Anyway I can’t even promise to be write more personal blogs for you to laugh your ass off at. Life is crazy, unpredictable and perfect. Hopefully I’ll blog more, but maybe I won’t.

In the meantime I hope you have discovered other blogs to entertain you. That doesn’t mean you should ignore me, though. I’m just saying.

Love,
Nana

The Uniqueness of First Kisses in #Romance Novels

A lovely first kiss from the movie Seven Pounds
Kissing on the mouth is basically two sets of lips smooshed together, sometimes the tongue gets involved. What amazes me about reading a kissing scene, particularly the first kiss, is that no matter how many times I’ve read it described, it always seems new.

Not once have I ever read a kissing scene and said, “Bleh, Debbie Christiana described it like this in Solstice or “This is the exact same kiss from The Chocolate Run by Dorothy Koomson.

No matter how many novels I've read, the description of the first kiss is fresh. Why?

To be honest I don’t think my memory is all that great to remember every single first kiss in the thousands of books I've read.
But I also think it’s because each book is an individual creation. The characters are all different, the situation is unique, and the interactions are distinct to that couple making the kiss something new altogether.

Have you ever read a kissing scene and remembered it from another book?

4 Mom-like rules of #blogging etiquette

Book bloggers are those wonderful people who love books so much that they like to share, as long as it’s in the genre they like to read or write in. Sometimes they ask an author to be on their blog while other times the author will make a request.

My mother taught me some basic things about life long before I became an author.  These rules definitely apply to being a guest on someone’s blog.
I'm not sure what I did to get that 'Mom look'
1. Say please. When requesting to be on someone’s blog ask with humility. Do not presume that because they like to have authors on their blog that they’ll put up with rudeness. Oh no, siree, Bob.

2. Thank your host. This one is common sense. When someone gives you something, such as a precious spot on their blog, take the time to thank the person in the comments section of the post. No need for a huge poem of gratitude, keep it simple and honest.

3. Share. I don’t care if you have one person following you on twitter and five on your Facebook page. Share the post. Generate some interest to your post. After all, it’s all about you.

4. Comment. My mom taught me not to ignore someone when they speak to me. The same is true about readers leaving comments. Taking the time to log into a blog site to leave a comment is a big deal. Acknowledge this and respond to the people who comment.

Those are some of the common ones I can think of. Do you have any rules that your mom, or dad, taught you that can be applied to being on someone’s blog?

Do you have the makings of a good #review #blog?

Book review blogs are those wonderful sites like The Jeep Diva  and Book Swagger  that review books  almost on a daily basis. These sites are awesome.  Of course they present book spotlights, blog hops, guest posts, and giveaways every once in a while but their main focus is reviewing books.

My blog would make a horrible book review site.  I love reviewing books  but there are some things I’m lacking to make it a good review blog. Of course I’m going to list them because lists rock.

1. The ability to read 2-3 books a week.

I’m a slow reader, if I read one book a week I think I’ve done a good job. Other than reading slowly, life likes to intercept, decreasing my reading time even more. If all I did was post reviews I’d post every other week or so. This does not make for a good review site.

2. Letting authors request reviews.

 Often times you see a disclaimer on the blog saying that the reviewer will give an honest opinion, even if the opinion is not positive. I can’t do that. I sometimes feel bad when I give a book a three rating, and three means I liked the book. When I read a book, I desire to love it not just like it. There is no way I would publish a less than three rating, which means I would have wasted my one book for the week leaving my blog blank.

3. Willingness to reject reading some books.

Not even the fastest reader can go through every book put before them. Some of them have to be rejected. No matter how many times it’s happened, rejection hurts. I neither like to receive nor give it.

4. Review partners.

Not all book review blogs have more than one reviewer, but it helps with exposing more books to the world. Right now it’s just little ole me running my blog.

These are things I believe make a book review blog successful. Is there anything else that makes a great book review site in your opinion?

Do you overuse this word in your #writing?

One of the best pieces of advice I ever read came from a literary agent question and answer page about how to submit a query. I have no recollection of who the agent was, but her advice stuck with me. She said that before sending in any work, look it over and  check for the word ‘that.’ It is an overused word which most times can be removed and have no affect on the sentence.
She told the writers to read the sentence out loud without the word ‘that’ in it. If the sentence needed the word then it could be replaced with which or something else. But sometimes ‘that’ is the best word.

I went through my WIP and saw that I had gravely overused the word.  A major thatectomy was undertaken. I was surprised such a small change could make a huge difference in the word count.

Is there a word you overuse?  ‘Just’ perhaps? I’m guilty there too.

Book Spotlight: The Inheritance by Olivia Mayfield: #Booktour and #Giveaway

This looks like an amazing book. Make sure to leave a comment because Olivia will be awarding $25 Amazon or BN.com gift card to a randomly drawn commenter during the tour.

BLURB:
Maggie Willings knew that returning home for her estranged grandfather’s funeral would not be easy, but she never expected the reading of his will to be the most difficult part. The four people named in the will—Maggie, her brother Robert, her ex-boyfriend Andrew, and her grandfather’s far-too-young girlfriend Bethany—are given a challenge: find out the truth about what happened to Maggie’s younger sister Cassandra, who vanished over eight years ago, and win the entirety of the estate.

Maggie is thrown by the strange request, reluctant to drag up painful memories of her sister’s disappearance, and bothered by her lingering attraction to Andrew, who wants to team up to solve the mystery. But there are ten million dollars on the line and Maggie has no idea where to start—or who she’ll be able to trust.

EXCERPT:
It was so strange, seeing this change in Andrew. He’d been much more casual, more carefree when they were younger. Had worn nothing but faded jeans and old rock band T-shirts practically year-round when he wasn’t in his football uniform. As an adult, he was confident, attractive.

Dangerous.

In one easy movement he took a seat beside Maggie. His cologne had a slight woodsy aroma, and she couldn’t help but breathe him in.

Then she exhaled loudly. No, she was not getting caught back up in him. Not now, not after everything she’d been through. His exterior may have changed, may have gotten slicker and more sophisticated. But deep down, he was still the same arrogant guy who was too selfish to feel, to love.

Who’d dumped her without one second thought.

Andrew looked at Bethany, Robert, Maggie. The waitress scuttled over and brought him and Bethany cups of coffee. They all drank in silence for a moment, buried in their own thoughts.
Tension wound through Maggie like a tightening coil.

“Look,” she finally said, putting her mug down and fixing her gaze on her brother, steadily ignoring Andrew and Bethany. “I’ll admit—I don’t like this at all. I can’t believe what Grandpa did. But it was his wish, his money, and I’m willing to put aside my own feelings to…” Her throat closed slightly and she swallowed. “To find out what happened to my sister.”

Author Myne Witman Tells How Her Blog Makes Money

Today I’d like to welcome author and blogger extraordinaire Myne Whitman. Her  educational and entertaining blog has become a money maker. (I made sure to take notes during this interview.)

NP: Please tell us a little about yourself.

MW: Myne Whitman is a pseudonym, I was born Nkem Okotcha and that is what has been translated loosely from my first language, Igbo, to English. I have lived in three countries Nigeria where I was born as well as the United States where I currently live with my husband, and Britain where I spent several years in between. These countries all play a role in who I am today. But the most important aspects of my background can be found in the thousands of books I’ve read.

NP: How long have you been writing?

MW: I’ve always loved reading and writing, exploring one’s thoughts and engaging with others on their’s as well. I started writing in my early teens. I was struggling with the transition between primary and secondary school and not being a tomboy or spending a lot of time outdoors playing anymore. Writing about young girls having adventures and doing the things I missed doing helped me at this point. I will however say I really started writing when romance became a big part of my life in my late teens, I wrote the dreams I had of healthy relationships between my heroines and the men of their dreams.

NP: When did you start blogging?

MW: I started blogging in 2009 after I got married and moved to the States. I had just started writing again and a writing partner suggested getting feedback from an audience that would more easily identify with my stories than an American would. I was also hoping to get the attention of a publisher or movie-maker.

NP: At what point did you start making money from blogging?

MW: That was in late 2011. I applied to the Blogher Network and was accepted. It has been growing since then.

NP: Does blogging sustain you financially or do you have another job?

MW: I don’t have another job. My husband is our family’s main earner, but what I do earn through blogging and my books is now enough to do most of what I need to do personally.

NP: Now tell us your secret, how did you start making money from blogging?

MW: LOL… there is no secret. It’s all about having the content that people like and promoting your site. By 2011 when I converted my blog to a business, I had self-published two of my books, and the online promotion that made them Amazon bestsellers had also catapulted my blog to winning the Nigerian Blog of the Year in 2010, and increased the traffic almost 10times. These things are easily verifiable and advertisers send me emails asking for me to promote their business or products.

NP: Your titles hook me to your blog posts. How do you come up with such catchy titles?

MW: Thank you. I guess it’s the mind of a writer. It also helps to check out what others who’ve been there before you do, and those you look up to. My best mentors are writers who are also in the Blogher Network, Linda Ikeji and Bellanaija.

NP: What’s next on the horizon for you?

MW: My best friend will say I’m building an online media empire, lol. I just want to keep writing, growing a community with a thirst for stories with a Nigerian and African bias whether online or book published and create a platform to promote others. I hope to grow a viable business with this model.

NP: Before you go, please give an analogy of what writing is for you.

MW: Writing for me is that link that binds us together, sharing stories, building communities, finding identity.

Thank you so much for being on my blog, Myne. Here is some information about her romance novel. Check out her blog, you will not be disappointed.

EXCERPT

He turns to stand in front of me, silent as a shadow. His hand lifts out of the dark. His fingertips brush the underside of my chin gently tipping my face up to his. How does he move and make no sound?  His fingers move to my temple, brushing away a hair then trailing down to the edge of my jaw where they halt. He watches my face and looks into my eyes. I feel a surge of loneliness from somewhere deep inside him. I don’t understand it or have time to dwell on it but it makes me want to hold onto him. His gaze lowers to my mouth.

He’s so close. I didn’t see it before, but he glows. The slightest iridescent shimmer encapsulates him, so totally different than the way Chris’s aura looked. He smells good too, like I remembered, and more. It’s so familiar, but I can’t say where from. The ozone smell of clean air after a storm and hints of cinnamon and honey swirled in cream. It’s intoxicating. Even the feel of him standing near me is like a caress passing over my skin. I can’t believe myself. I’m going to let this vague stranger kiss me, and I want him to.

The Good of #Ghana – The Technology

I was born in Ghana and raised in the US. When it was time for me to come back I’ll admit that I was SCARED. What I was expecting and what I got were two different things.

I was shocked to learn that everything I could get in the US I was able to obtain in Ghana, even if it was at a higher cost.  Everyone had their own cell phones. Traffic was here too (cars good, traffic not so good).
Osu is one of my favorite hangouts (Frankie's has great pizza)

Accra Mall at night
Riding in my cousin's car, my eyes  were open wide to the sites she was pointing out as the latest song by Rhianna played on the radio. Joy abounded.

My phenomenal cousin introduced me to an internet cafe and I almost fell out. Computers, in Ghana for everyone to use? Imagine? Boy was I backward thinking about the country.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that all of Ghana is technologically advanced, but the country has all of the creature comforts that I had gotten accustomed to in the US. A person only needs to know how and where to access them, since I am a fast learner, I had no difficulty finding what I needed. And it’s getting easier by the day.

I hope I have shown you a little piece of modern Ghana. There is more to learn. Did you know Ghana was like this?

The Good of #Ghana – The people

Akwaaba (welcome in Twi).

I might be a little bit biased, but the people of Ghana rock! Okay, not all of them, but I did promise not to mention the bad or the ugly of Ghana, right?

Ghana boasts of the most hospitable people that exist in the world. This is no lie. We are a super friendly people (for the most part).

My little friend Bea, leading me into my room
(notice the cell phone she's holding for me at her back)

Need directions, no problem, ask and they will direct you if they know where the place is, some people will even go out of their way to take you to your destination.

Need company, no issues there, get up and head over to a friend's house and you will be received, even without a prior phone call (don't try this with me though, I'll pretend I'm not home).

Most Ghanaians will take the time out of their day to chat. Not just with foreigners but with other Ghanaians too. Loneliness is not really an issue in this country, and I think that's wonderful.

If you decide to come to Ghana, know that you will be thoroughly welcomed and treated with graciousness and hospitality.

Talking about asses (no, not people who misbehave)

Today we chat about the human ass aka gluteus maximus (minimus in some people’s cases- he he he) aka buttock, shortened to butt. I myself am curious to know why we look at people’s asses. It’s done in romance novels all the time, so I’m right on the romance course with this post.

When a person is walking away from you, tell me that your eyes don’t drift down to see if that behind is jiggly, firm, gigantic, small, inverted, or perfect. For the love of all that is good, tell me that I’m not the only one who sometimes desires to throw a coin at someone’s huge ass just to see how far away it lands after bouncing off. The bigger the ass, the greater the distance? Or is it the firmer the ass the greater the distance.

With that said, I’ll let you all know that I have a big gluteus, so I am totally justified in writing this post.

I’ll leave you with my favorite butt songs of all time. Ross and Rachel sang it to baby Emma to make her laugh and it was hilarious. Take it away Sir Mix A Lot.

Why is the human ass such a fascinating feature?

A glorious week has gone by and it's time to celebrate

Vikki at Scribblings of an Aspiring Author has started a meme where every Friday we post what we are celebrating for the week. Thanks Vikki.

This week I’m celebrating:
1. My birthday month. If you don’t know what that means to me then click here.

2. I taught this week. I love teaching. I'm not looking forward to the day when the students realize they don't have to laugh at all of my jokes.

3. I did a beta read for ‘Nana’s Novella’- not really the title, but I harassed the author (Debbie Christiana) about it so much that she temporarily named it after me. It is the sequel to Twin Flames, which I loved. All I can say is watch out people, this novella is amazing.

4. Once again no violence was applied to anyone by my own hands- I will always count that as something to celebrate.

I wish I could say that I was celebrating a holiday, or two, like people in another country, which shall remain nameless, but it starts with a U and end with an S.

How was your week?

Let’s check out what other people are celebrating for the week?

I’ll Take Care of You

I was listening to the lyrics of I’ll Take Care of You by Drake featuring Rhianna. I could listen to listen to this song all day.  One of the lines caught my attention and screamed BLOG POST!

Dealing with a heart I didn’t break

I remember my first serious relationship. He was my heart. I really really really loved this man. I was open and free with him and I thought we were going to get married and live together forever and ever. And then he dumped me and helped me to create my baggage. Baggage that some poor schmuck would have to deal with later when they tried to love me.

Drake’s line  summarizes the majority of romance novels that I have ever read. Either the hero or heroine, sometimes both have to break through barriers of the person they love, that they never helped to create. They have to bear the consequences of someone else’s actions in order to love the person their heart has chosen. It doesn’t seem fair. But then again love tends to overcome insurmountable circumstances.

Have you ever had to deal with a heart you didn’t break?

A Kiss to Die For by Gail Barrett: Book Blast and #Giveaway

Gail will be awarding a $25 Amazon gift certificate and either a signed print copy (US ONLY) or an electronic copy of Fatal Exposure (Buried Secrets book one) to one randomly drawn commenter during this tour and her other Super Book Blast on August 27th.

BLURB:
Homeless Army veteran Sullivan Turner is nobody’s hero.  His failure to save his fallen comrades proved that.  So when a gutsy social worker gets caught in a drug gang’s crosshairs, he knows he’s the last man who can safeguard her and the pregnant teenagers she’s trying to protect.

Former debutant Haley Barnes learned the hard way how to survive.  After witnessing a cold-blooded murder, the terrified teenaged runaway changed her identity and hid to save her life.  But when the killer tracks her down and attacks the girls in the homeless shelter she now runs, Haley knows the time has come to stand and fight.  But to bring down the powerful killer she must confront her high-society family’s darkest secrets -- and convince wounded warrior Sully Turner he’s the hero she believes.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt
She tightened her grip on his waist.  His pulse slowing, he closed his eyes, feeling oddly at peace despite the danger hounding their heels.  Maybe it was because she’d suffered as much as he had.  Maybe because she understood how deep a loss like that could sear.  But he realized that he liked being around Haley.  He respected her.  Admired her.
He was falling for her.  Hard.
His stomach sank.  He had no right to pursue her.  He was the last person she needed, unsuitable in every way.  She needed someone who could protect her, defend her, not an unstable wreck like him.
But he couldn’t seem to resist her.  Everything about her impressed him -- her loyalty, her determination to safeguard others, her refusal to run from the enemy dogging their steps.
And God help him, but he wanted to feel that again, that idealism, that drive to make a difference in the world, that need to battle the bad guys and keep the defenseless safe.
To be the man that he once was.
Book Spotlight: Heat Wave by Taryn Kincaid
Taryn Kincaid has been a busy woman. The fourth book in her Sleepy Hollow Series is out and it looks amazing.
BLURB:
Sent into the human realm to retrieve prodigal princess, Zena Night, Bhyrne Raines is shocked and unprepared for his carnal reaction to the sexy succubus. In service to the succubus queen, the rugged enforcer must stifle the instant passion exploding within him. Fulfilling his royal duty doesn’t allow for quickie dalliances. His biological clock is ticking, and he begins to enter breedspawn, an intense and unstoppable frenzy of mating all fire-demon males must endure. But the more he wants to avoid Zena, the more he’s drawn to her.
Reluctant to give up her carefree life of partying among the mortals when the hot-as-sin Bhyrne comes to fetch her for the queen, Zena uses her succubus wiles to entice him, or at least delay the inevitable trip to the royal court. Once in the demon stronghold, hidden deep within the Catskill mountains, she learns the reason for the summons: she must choose a consort within two days.
Zena needs a mate. Bhyrne needs to mate. With time running out for both of them, they each turn to 1Night Stand. With time running out, can Madame Eve come to the rescue?
EXCERPT:
Holy freeze gun, Batman. The words died before she managed to expose them to air. Her mouth snapped shut.
One of the Queen’s guards stood before her, huge and tall, nearly twice the size of most of the other males in the joint, a hella hunka supernatural male. Clearly not human, although Hugo Boss’d to his Adam’s apple in an apparent bid to fit in among the humans trolling for hot sex, illicit drugs, watered-down booze and loud music. Beneath the fabric of the unstructured designer suit, the toned muscles of a demonic warrior rolled like tidal waves. Even without the small lapel pin the uninformed might mistake for the The Rolling Stones’ logo, she’d recognize him for a captain of the guard. Maybe the Queen’s own Captain.
Hellfire and cotton candy. Trouble. T-R-O-U-B-L-E.
But, by the goddess, whattahottie! Despite her certainty that his presence in the club corridor boded ill for her, the force of her sudden hunger shook her.
Like lightning.
Thunder.
A desperate bolt out of the blue.
Instant connection to him on the paranormal plane, as if he’d wrapped her aura in gold chains and tugged her to him. But did that fast lane to heaven run one way or two?
A grim expression straightened the lines of what otherwise might have been a generous, sensuous mouth. A military buzz cut had weed-whacked hair the color of iron. And it didn’t stop there. Without doubt, metal fortified every single cell in the massive male’s body, pure titanium flowing in his veins. The stern planes and angles of a hard-edged, swoon-worthy face set grimly as cement. Though he lounged in the hallway like any Archie or Jughead waiting in line to discharge his rented beer in a urinal, he exuded authority, his carriage and bearing such that he made the others look like a pack of Twizzlers. Oh. Yeah. More than a mere guardsman, she guessed. An enforcer.
Ruh-roh.
About the author
Taryn is an Olympic caliber athlete egg roller and spends a great deal of her time petitioning the U.S.O.C. to introduce a fantail shrimp competition. When she's not bungee jumping off the Palisades or parasailing up and down the Hudson River, she devotes her time to caring for her aging pet walrus, arranging her voodoo doll-pin collection and practicing rhythmic chants. At this moment, she is busy sweeping up the loose masala chai tea leaves she spilled all over the kitchen floor. (Probably because she needs COFFEE.) Wait. Is that something…sparkly?
Taryn hangs around a lot on Facebook and Twitter with her trillions of fans and pops in at Goodreads from time to time. You can catch her on her website, http://tarynkincaid.com, and her blog, http://dreamvoyagers.blogspot.com where she lives for comments!
