Loosening his hold, he pulled himself back to hook a finger under her chin so she could look him in the eyes. She needed to see the truth of his words.
“No, Comfort. You’re strong. You always have been and I don’t doubt you always will be. Your ex was the weak one for expecting you to heal from the heartbreak of a lifetime without changing. For not being able to remember that everything passes. Everything. And not sticking by you until it did.”
Warm air fanned his cheek when she expelled a shuddering breath. “He had every right. Hell, I’m surprised he stayed as long as he did. We hadn’t been getting along for the year prior. We were both overworked and...”
“What?” He prodded with a small shake of her shoulder.
“I had been putting off having a baby for a while.” She lowered her gaze. “I wasn’t ready to lose the foothold I’d gotten on my career. If we’d had a child he would’ve proceeded while I’d been held back. I wasn’t ready to make the sacrifice.” She focused on him again. “I guess that makes me selfish.”
Akin smiled. “Only as selfish as anyone else, male or female, who wants to make a career for themselves. It’s just that women are expected to fall back when they have a child while men continue forward.”
Her brows bunched together. “If I didn’t know better I’d think you were a feminist.”
Free from witnesses, he released the laughter. How did she have the uncanny ability to set him free? “What makes you think I’m not?”
She raised a finger into the air, “You’re mean to women.”
“I’m mean to everyone.”
“True.” A second digit flung up. ”You don’t want female sailors on your ship.”
He grabbed her hand and laced their fingers together. How could such a small thing fit so perfectly into his?
“It’s not my rule. We’re on a pirate-seeking ship where the risk of being attacked is high. Pirates have no honor. I’d hate to think what would happen to a woman if she were ever captured during a siege.”

Adjoa’s polite knuckle knock hadn’t worked, so her fist had to meet the door. He could sleep through anything. “Kwame, it’s me.”
When the door swung open, her eyes met a tall, sexy man with no shirt. The sprinkling of dark curly hair on his well-muscled chest forced her fingers to grip the handle of her bag so she wouldn’t reach out to stroke him.
A bicep flexed as he reached up to rub his eye. She’d always been a sucker for a man with a well-toned body, and this one met all of her muscle criteria.
Her gaze roamed up to the face scowling down at her. Holy crap. It was Kwame’s body she’d been ogling. She pushed past him so he couldn’t see her blush and headed into the kitchen. Grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, she gulped it down. It didn’t come close to cooling her off. What was going on?
“Why aren’t you dressed? It’s seven.” She glanced down at her watch. “Five after seven to be exact. You should be ready to go.”
“I had a late night.”
Another swig of water at the sound of the sexy rumble of his morning voice didn’t help with the quiver in her stomach. Who was this man and why did he affect her like this? She hadn’t felt this way since she’d had that brief flutter of attraction in college. It had been easy to get over him when he started dating that hussy architect major.
“What were you doing? Computer work?” Please say yes. For years, they’d avoided detailed discussions about the people they dated; it seemed to be a mutual unspoken agreement between them.
“You know me too well.”
Relief flowed out of her in the form of a long exhale, glad he hadn’t been with a woman last night. Not that it should matter. Just because she’d asked him to be her fake man didn’t mean he couldn’t see other women. She didn’t even care. “Not good enough to circumvent you not being awake by now. Get going. Make it quick so both of us aren’t late.”
As he shuffled toward the bathroom, her gaze wandered down to his tight ass. Placing the cold, half-empty water bottle on her warm neck, she snapped her attention away. All of a sudden, her nerdy friend Kwame had morphed into a tempting man.

NP: Please tell us a little bit about yourself.

AA: I live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I’ve been writing stories since I was a little girl. I used to write stories in a copybook and my grandmother would read them. My first published short story was a young adult – about a teenage girl, a teenage boy, and a lonely puppy – that I’d written while in college. The story had won an award, and I started submitting to small literary magazines.  I was so excited when I got the acceptance letter from the magazine – along with a $5.00 check.

NP: Is Magic Moment your first published novel?

AA: Yes, it is. But, not the first novel I’ve written. I still have the first novel that I wrote – typed on an old electric typewriter – in a box in my closet. The premise is good, but the writing is awful.

NP: How did you come up with the concept for Magic Moment?

AA: I started with the characters. I had an idea for a hero who appeared to everyone to be self-centered and egotistical, but was actually very sensitive and compassionate. And, a heroine who drew those qualities out of him.  I just needed a situation for my secondary story.

I once worked in the office of a produce warehouse. Every day I passed by crates and boxes of fruits and vegetables and would wonder if there actually were pears in the box labeled “pears.” Yes, there were pears in the pear box, and apples in the apples’ crates. But, the warehouse atmosphere was how I got the idea of having Chase’s father involved in his shady dealings.

NP: Please give an analogy of what writing is like for you.

AA: Writing is like dieting.  It’s painful to give up those ice cream sundaes. But, when you’ve lost those 10 pounds and see how great you look in that new dress, the sacrifice was worth the effort.

Surely, Chase’s marriage, and the woman who snagged him, would certainly be hot gossip items for Rachel.

“How fast can you get pregnant?” he asked bluntly.

Her green eyes widened. “What?”

“Any chance you already are?”

“Are what?”

“Pregnant.”

“No.”

“In the office, didn’t I hear you on the phone with,” he paused. “What was his name? Jeff? Joe?”

“Jack,” she corrected. “We broke up a few months ago.”

“Really?” His interest piqued.

“Yes. And I haven’t been with anyone…until last night.”

His eyes lit up and he cocked his head sideways. “You’re kidding?”

Laura equated a man in her bed with an exclusive, serious relationship. That was her rule until last night. “I can count the number of men I’ve been with on one hand, and have fingers left over.” She didn’t know whether to feel proud or slighted.

He was amazed. “Wow.” He quickly regained his purpose. “Well, we have to get you pregnant.”

The man had lost his mind.
