By Grace Burrowes
April

***Henning, Duke of Clonmere is bound by a promise made by his late father. He must marry one of the Earl of Falmouth’s daughters, though only the oldest, Lady Iris, who considers herself on the shelf, interests Clonmere… In fact, she fascinates him. ***

“The waltz will start soon,” Iris said. “We should be going inside.”

His Grace of Clonmere remained on the bench beside her. “Might I confide a secret? I’m all waltzed out. I have no more waltzes, minuets, quadrilles, gavottes or Roger de Coverley’s in me. Not tonight. Your sisters have worn me to flinders.”

I want my waltz. And yet, Iris was also relieved. To twirl around in Clonmere’s arms, pretending to be merely amused, pretending to merely enjoy what Iris would instead be savoring and resenting and treasuring…. Clonmere’s demurral was in truth a reprieve.

“My sisters thrive on society’s entertainments. You will have a waltzing duchess, Your Grace. Best accommodate yourself to that reality now, even if it’s not precisely what you wish for.”

Clonmere plucked a flower from the urn beside the bench. “What do you wish for? If you had a fairy godmother, and she granted you a wish-come-true, what would it be, Lady Iris?”

Just as the duke was out of waltzes, Iris was out of witty rejoinders. The plain, honest truth begged to be spoken, if only this once, if only to a man making conversation to avoid the ballroom.

“A wish? My deepest, most secret wish?”

“The wish your heart whispers as you drift into dreams, that wish.”

To not end up with cat hair all over my life. To not be a burden on my family. To never… but those wishes were all in the negative. What did Iris wish for affirmatively? She had the sense Clonmere would wait for her answer until Michaelmas, though by then he’d be married to some sister or other.

“I wish that a worthy man would regard me, the true me, as the fulfillment of some of his dreams, Your Grace. Not all, of course, just as I wouldn’t expect him to be the sum total of my life either. I was raised to anticipate that I’d find a partner though, and I’m not ashamed to long for it. I wish that man would find me, and kiss me as if all the love in his heart had finally found a home, and as if all the love in my heart was his dearest treasure. Just once, I’d like to experience such a kiss.”

The admission surprised her, but also came as something of a relief. Twenty-six was not ancient, and longing for somebody to love was purely human.

“You are very brave,” Clonmere said, rising. “Very fierce.”
Now he was ready to return to the ballroom? “I am neither.”
He offered his hand—not his arm—and Iris rose. She’d confided much more than she’d intended, but the recitation had given her courage. She would not slink off to Surrey, she would not consign herself to the company of dyspeptic cats and literary spinsters.

“Where are we going?” she asked, for the duke was not taking her in the direction of the ballroom.

“What matters one more waltz, when I can make a lady’s wish come true?” He came to a halt toward the back of the garden. The sound of the ballroom faded to a distant roar, moonlight glinted on a trickle of water splashing from a fountain sculpted into the shape of a blooming rose.

“I must make my own wish come true,” Iris said.

Clonmere shifted his grip on Iris’s hand, linking their fingers. “On Saturday, I will choose which of Falmouth’s daughters to court. From that day forward, I will be devoted to her and only to her, if she’ll have me. I must make my choice in a manner that offers none of your sisters insult, or the woman I choose for my duchess will forever regret that she caused her siblings to suffer. Jealousy among siblings is the very devil, and I won’t be the cause of it in my wife’s family.”

He was trying to make some point, but Iris grasped only the first part of his declaration. “You have not yet made your choice. You aren’t devoted to anybody yet.”

“Precisely.” He took off his gloves, a curious thing to do when the supper was still a set of dances away. “I am free to behave as I please, and I please to make your one, honest wish come true—if I may?”

A peculiar sensation welled from Iris’s middle, part glee, part terror. “You’d like to kiss me?”

“That was your wish.”

Her wish had involved a particular kind of kiss, which Clonmere couldn’t possibly deliver.

She nodded.

He framed her face in the warmth of his hands. “Then… as you wish, my lady.”

Guest Blog and Giveaway: Make Me a Match (Soul Mate Tree Series) by Mackenzie Lucas

GENRE: Fantasy

One randomly drawn commenter will receive a $50 Amazon/BN GC so make sure to enter.

Where Do Ideas Come From
Non-writers ask me all the time, where do you get your ideas from? Amazon sends me a Box-Of-Fresh-Ideas-A-Week. Like clockwork. Snort. Just kidding. Seriously, ideas come from everywhere if you’re a writer or creative type. I could be from headlines in a newspaper or the local news. A random bit of conversation overheard on the subway or at the table next to me at my favorite Thai restaurant. Sometimes, an idea forms out of an unfinished story or a snippet of someone’s life journey and I ask myself, … what if? What if it hadn’t happened quite that way. What if x happened instead? And then I’m off to the races. Or, yet other times, I watch a movie or see a television show and it doesn’t end the way I’d like. That, too, will send me down the story path to develop a brand new tale with characters known only to me traveling a similar, yet wholly different path. Other times, story ideas come from brainstorming sessions with my writing friends. During these magical times, I’m usually stuck. I’ve developed an idea and my back is to the wall. I can’t see my way out to a happy ending. No how. No way. That’s when a friend, who thinks totally differently than I do, says what if your heroine did this? Or what if this problem arose from that consequence? Hot, damn. Then all of a sudden, what I thought was a concrete wall behind me opens up to a brand new vista and again the story is on its way to an exciting new conclusion. So, there’s no one good place to get ideas. They come from life, from living. It’s the beauty and the curse of being a writer. And I wouldn’t give it up for anything in the world.

BLURB:

Widower Mark Cage is rusty at relationships. He owns the micro-brewery that supplies
the restaurant and bar at St. Augustine's premiere spa resort, Essence, with its award
winning local craft beer. And he’s been focused on building his business and raising
his teenage daughter ever since his wife died ten years ago. Nothing else.

When he runs into a sweet kindergarten teacher who is vacationing in St. Augustine
and staying at Essence everything changes. A sudden, inexplicable encounter with a mystical tree
known for its legend of bringing lovers together, convinces Mark the schoolteacher is
his destined match. However, his encounters are disastrous.

His only hope of persuading the woman he wants to even consider a date with him is
working with Essence’s on-site relationship guru, Athena Sullivan. A reknowned relationship coach, Athena is the opposite of everything Mark wants in a woman. She’s feisty,
independent, and challenges him at every turn. Sparks fly between the two from their
first meeting and flare into a blazing inferno as Athena helps him navigate the dating scene.

After a series of too-perfect, mis-queued dates, Mark realizes maybe the woman of his
dreams is not a sweet schoolteacher after all. Maybe she’s a feisty, independent, sexy relationship coach who stands up to him and is everything he’s always wanted or needed in a woman.

If he opens himself up to true love, he might just find second chances at love are possible and that his perfect soul mate is closer than he thinks.

EXCERPT

Two days later Jamie came bounding into his office at Ancient City Brewery. “Hey, Daddy-o.”

“Uh oh. She wants something,” Mark commented to no one in particular as he pushed away the stack of invoices in front of him. Running a brewery was work he didn’t usually mind. Today, though, his focus was shot. “What do you need now, dollface?”

“Nope. I don’t want anything. I’ve got something for you. It’s a surprise.” She waved a folder in his face.

He went to grab for it and she snatched it back. “Hold on. Not so fast.”

Mark settled back into his chair and laced his hands behind his head, prepared to wait for the reveal. “Okay, so what’s this all about?”

“Weeeeeeeell. It’s good for you, but you’re not gonna like it.”

“Sounds like what I used to tell you about eating your Brussel sprouts and broccoli.”

“Eww.” Her face comically contorted. “You don’t need to get nasty.”

Amazing. The girl still hated broccoli and Brussel sprouts to this day.

“It’s in no way as bad as Brussel sprouts.” She blessed him with one of her brightest smiles. He was in so much trouble.

“This is going to be bad.” He groaned. “Out with it. What is it? College is ten grand more? You want to go to school in the Grand Caymans?”

“Can I? Is that a possibility?”

“Ah, no, not even a chance. You’ve been accepted into the University of Virginia. That’s where you’re going.”

She pretended to pout for a few moments, then smiled. “Okay. Charlottesville it is, then. Sooooo. Ready for your surprise?”

“Girl, you better share before you burst.”

She studied him warily. “All right. So. Here’s the deal. I bought something . . .”

“This never ends well for a man.” Mark sighed and pulled at his ear. “How much did you spend?”

“For me, what is a mini-fortune.”

Mark groaned. “How much?”

“A thousand dollars.”

His front chair legs slammed to the concrete floor. “You what?”

“Now, listen. It’s a good cause.” Her face started to get red. “And, well, I spent my own money.”

“Jamie, what money?”

“I work part-time.”

“Yes, and you were saving your money for school. Books and such.”

“Right.” Her gaze skittered away. “I’ll get by. Most of the books are online anyway these days.”

“What did you spend the money on?”

“I told you, I spent it on you.”

It’s only been a few years since I buried the love of my life. I hear the word marriage and it pulls me from my thoughts of Frost, and I pay close attention.
“I think that’ll be enough time to plan, wouldn’t you agree?”
“To what?”
“Clarisse, were you not listening to me this whole time?”
I shake my head, not caring that I give myself away. Shit, this whole situation is new for me. It’s not every day a girl gets a blackmail or a proposal—I need time to process.
“I said, we’ll marry at the end of the month. That gives enough time to plan.”
“What?!”
“If I knew I could get away with it, I’d marry you with the hour. I think four weeks is reasonable, and I’m not pushing the date out longer,” he says with finality.
I don’t even protest, really. What would be the point? He continues, noting his mother will arrive next week—maybe sooner—to help with the planning.
“You’ve already told her?” My eyes, I know, are wide as saucers.
“Of course not, but I know Delta Price, and when I tell her we’re getting married, she’ll be on the first thing smoking.”
“Are you going to tell her I was with Frost?”
His handsome features soften, and my heartbeats start to quicken with worry of what she’ll think of me, jumping from one friend to the other. Even if they lost touch, Dylan and Frost shared a bond of friendship. He must know what I’m thinking. “She already knows of you and the twins. She was at the funeral.”
“Oh,” I whisper.
“We won’t have time right after the wedding for a honeymoon. I have some business to wrap up in New York, so we’ll go there instead, me, you, and the kids. I’ll take you on a proper honeymoon after I finish my business.”
“What if my business won’t allow me the time off to travel to New York or wherever else?” I press my lips and raise an eyebrow, challenging him.
He only smiles and continues laying out the details.
“Honeydew will be our primary residence. I’ve always loved the place and having a family to share in my joy is what I want.”
“I sure hope it stays that way, because I am building a business, let’s not forget.” I can’t hold my tongue on this matter, and have no problem reminding him at every turn. The only reason I’m allowing him to force my hand is to keep my business and my kids’ home. I’m giving up my freedom, but not my independence.
“I want to kiss the fire right off those soft lips.” He licks his and smiles at me.
I’m equal parts pissed and equal parts aroused. Pissed, because he’s smiling as if I’m an adorable child throwing a fit, and aroused because…well that’s what Dylan Price does to me. I stand, needing to get away from him, because if I don’t, I will turn into a child throwing a fit.
I don’t make it far before being spun around, and my mouth devoured by Dylan. He holds my face captive between strong hands. Dylan tastes amazing. His lips are fast becoming addictive. I soften into him against my will. I want to rage and fight, but how can I when he smells and tastes so delicious?
Soft pulls on my lips end an extremely heated exchange. “Your business will always be important. Don’t forget that.” He takes a few more pulls from my mouth. “Let me give you something else to never forget.”

I'M YOURS

Peggy Jordan had long ago closed the door on her heart’s desires, accepting she would never have a loving husband and family of her own. Then a friend asks her to care for an orphaned little girl, and she meets the child’s last living relative. With him, her patience is tested, her desires are unleashed, and she gets the first taste of a life she’d always felt was out of reach.

Years ago, Trevor Duncan left Savannah and vowed never to return. He traveled to remote corners of the globe, helping people, and helping himself to countless women in emotionally-empty relationships. A phone call in the middle of the night changes his entire life. He has a niece who needs him, and when he meets the woman caring for her, he’s consumed with having her all to himself.

Their desire is strong. Their love is instant. But can they learn to trust each other and survive the road to happily-ever-after?

I’m passing the broom in my kitchen, attempting to clean up as much of the flour from my homemade pie crusts and pizza dough as I can. It’s another pizza and movie Saturday, and Trevor hasn’t come over with Adeline yet. I check the time again and it’s almost noon.
Clarisse’s nanny will be here around two with the twins for the play date. Adeline has been so excited for this day all week. Before they took off last night, she promised to go to sleep fast so morning could come quicker.
When Trevor wasn’t at my door bright and early with Adeline and a cup of Starbucks coffee, my first thought was to text him. Instead of, Are you still coming? I texted, Missing my morning cup of Joe. I have yet to receive a reply.
After putting away the broom and dust pan, I walk over to the work desk in the corner of my kitchen and grab my cell from the charger. I pull up Trevor’s number, ready to call, when a hard knock to the front door startles me. I power walk to the front entry and open the heavy wood door. Adeline rushes in and hugs my legs so tight, as if she didn’t just leave me last night. Her hair is all over her head, and she’s wearing rubber boots with her night clothes.
She looks a hot mess. I hold her face in my hands and lift it so I can see her expression. “Is everything okay?’
“No,” Trevor answers.
 “What happened?” I ask.
“Water pipe broke sometime in the middle of the night.” He’s holding a cup of Starbucks coffee. I’m guessing he saw my text. I smile and take the cup. “We woke to water everywhere this morning. I’m thankful it only reached the top of the baseboards. Hate to think what could have happened if it touched the wall plugs in that old house.”
My blood runs cold and I feel lightheaded at the thought. I recall when I first laid eyes on that old house, I questioned Trevor’s logic. Here he is with enough money to purchase three of my houses with no discomfort, and he settles on renting a small, old house.
“‘It’s my first home. We don’t need much, and it’s temporary,’” he had told me, and I realized Trevor was no typical rich asshole.
I hold Adeline tight and move from in front the door. I’m squeezing her, repeatedly kissing her cheek, grateful to see her face. When I think I’ve composed myself, I pull back and ask her to head upstairs so she can cleanup and dress before her play date. She runs up the stairs to her room, and I rush into Trevor’s waiting arms.
I’m holding him a little awkward because of my coffee cup, but Trevor has me completely engulfed in a strong embrace. “What are you going to do?”
He takes a breath before answering. “I reserved a room at a hotel in town.”
“Why?” I give him a confused look. “You know you can stay here. Adeline has gone through so many changes. Her room is familiar, and we have a routine.” I smile before adding, “The two of you are here over ninety percent of the day anyway.”
Trevor gives me a smile and I pray he agrees. I make one more attempt at getting my way, but this next statement is equally as true as the last. “I’m so happy you and Adeline are safe. To even give the smallest of my energy to the thoughts of what could have happened… I want to lock you both away so you’re safe forever. Right now I need you to say yes, Trevor.”

Review and Spotlight: Navy Seal to The Rescue by Tawny Weber

This post is part of a virtual book tour organized by Goddess Fish Promotions. Tawny Weber will be awarding a $20 Amazon or Barnes and Noble GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour. Click on the tour banner to see the other stops on the tour.

Injured in the line of duty, navy SEAL Travis “Hawk” Hawkins retreats to paradise. But R & R takes a turn when he runs smack into a beautiful blonde who just witnessed a murder. Travis offers to help, only to find himself equally taunted and titillated by irresistible Lila Adrian. Can the wounded warrior protect Lila and take down a deadly crime ring?

Read an Excerpt

The gorgeous view couldn’t be discounted, Lila Adrian decided.

Wanting—needing—to absorb it a little more before she went to work, she stepped around the side of the building and started down the wooden walkway. When she reached the soft sand, she stopped to step out of her kitten-heeled slides.

In the act of slipping off the second shoe, she had to grab on to the bleached wooden railing to keep her balance.

Because the view just got a whole lot more interesting.

A man stepped out of the surf, water sluicing off muscles that made her want to raise her hands in praise.

Hello, gorgeous, was all she could think.

Gorgeous, hot and sexy, all rolled into one very muscular, very intense package.

The guy was ripped. From his broad shoulders to his lean calves, he epitomized manly perfection. She knew she was staring, but she’d been raised to believe that a work of art deserved appreciation.

And oh, boy did she appreciate him.

Enough to offer a big smile as he slowly made his way across the sand to his towel.

Her lips twitched when he glared in return.

She was too amused to take offense.

As a woman who’d garnered plenty of ogling over the years, she supposed she could understand his reaction. And while it wasn’t like she’d strolled down and grabbed herself a handful of his undeniably pinchable butt, she’d definitely fantasize about licking those drops off water off of his flat belly.

But it was lunchtime, and as yummy as he looked, the guy obviously wasn’t on the menu. And she had a job to do.

But her gaze—as unwilling to leave as the rest of her—lingered for a few more seconds. She’d never seen a more visually appealing man. Or, she acknowledged, her eyes flicking over his scowl again, a more discouraging one.

Ah, well, she decided with a philosophical sigh.

At least she’d gotten to enjoy the view.

My review
The cover is gorgeous. It represents the hero so well, intense, skilled, confident and just plain amazing. He’s alpha to the core and everyone knows it. A protective man by nature who has training to back him up. Oh, Travis – sigh.

Danger threw Lila at Travis. A very interesting couple who had sparks go off from the first moment they met. The romance between them was both sweet and powerful. They seemed to fit, even though they didn’t always agree or get along and knew each other for a short time.

This was a fast paced, engaging read. There was only one thing that annoyed me and that was when Lila made a rather selfish decision. She knew it (after the fact) and Travis knew it (he’d tried to prevent it from happening). Despite her extreme tactical error, everything ended up working out in a way that made me a happy romance reader.

I give this book four out of five gun shaped chocolate bars.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

From the Îles des Chiens in Tunisia to Cape Agulhas in South Africa, Santo Antao in Cape Verde to Rodrigues in the Mauritian Islands, our stories take the readers on adventures across the African landscape, whether it is in cities or villages, deserts or jungles, mountains or beaches. No African location or experience is off limits.

We are currently accepting the following: romantic fiction, women's fiction, urban fantasy and thrillers.
