Spotlight: The Protectors Series

HEALING THE MEDIC BY NANA PRAH
Doctor Comfort Djan is looking for salvation after a tragic accident, which takes her to deprived regions where her skills heal the helpless. Commander Akin Solarin wants nothing more than to do his job, especially when his medic's temporary replacement turns out to be a disconcerting woman who pushes all his buttons. He runs a tight ship, and doesn't need captivating and efficient yet aloof Comfort around to keep his heart-rate in semi-permanent overdrive.

Neither can deny the attraction between them, but navigating uncharted personal waters may be the least of their problems when confronted with bold pirate attacks and other vicious unknown dangers onboard the frigate. And when Comfort's life gets on the line, Akin knows he will do anything to save his medic and heal her battered heart in the process.

EXCERPT FROM UNRAVELLING HIS MARK BY ZEE MONODEE
“It’s not good, patronne. The model who was to have the showstopper bride on his arm ate some of the prawn cocktail. He is currently puking his guts out in the guest loo at the back.”
“Thank God he made it to the loo and didn’t barf on any of the clothes.”
Trust her problem-solving mind to come up with the silver lining in every situation. But seriously, if any of the gowns had been ruined, Nina would’ve had her hide. All the pieces had thousands of pearls or Swarovski crystals hand-sewn on them.
Think, Annabelle, think.
“So the only problem we have right now is that we need an escort for the showstopper.”
“And her,” Daniel whispered with a glance towards a still-raving Nina.
“Her, we can deal with, and it will sort itself out once we find a replacement for the sick model.”
Daniel snorted. “Good luck with that. Have you forgotten the brief she forced down the throat of every modelling agency on the island? The man had to be buff and—”
“Taller than six-foot-two. I know.”
Good luck finding a six-foot man at random on the island in the first place, and now on such short notice? They had their work cut out for her.
Still, there were some foreigners in the audience. There must be one about six-two and muscular. What had Nina written on the call sheet? She’d wanted ‘a tall drink of water.’
There was no time to ponder the situation. The sooner they calmed Nina down, the sooner they’d get this show underway, and the sooner this night would be over, too.
So, armed with optimism and determination, Annabelle strutted back into the main room, a smile plastered on her face as she eyed every single man around. Just her luck. None seemed taller than six feet, and they all looked like guys whose only attempt at exercise came from a leisurely stroll once a month along a putting green.
Her spirits were sinking fast, but no, she wouldn’t be the victim. She would turn this around one way or another. If she couldn’t find— Her shoulder collided into someone, and reflex made her look up and say, “Oh, pardon.
But the apology died on her lips as her gaze raked over the hulking piece of masculinity she’d bumped into. He was tall, all right. Comfortably above six-two, she’d say, with the frame to match. Those broad, broad shoulders looked snug inside the clean lines of an obviously expensive hand-tailored suit the shade of a rare Dom Pérignon millésime. His skin was the colour of sugar when it had just started to turn into caramel, a golden glow on his chiselled features and cheekbones so sharp and defined, it was ridiculous. His head was shaved, and his eyes were dark. Smouldering. Intense. A thin goatee that looked like it had been hand-drawn onto him framed his solid chin and gave bearing to his strong jaw.
A puff of air escaped her.
“Tall drink of water,” she mumbled, and blinked.
The gears of her stunned mind started clicking then, and she gasped. “Tall drink of water!”

Prah, Constantine and Baryeh Reviews: Maggie for Hire (Maggie MacKay, Magical Tracker 1) by Kate Danley

Happy May everybody. The rains are falling and the flowers are blooming. Spring is lovely. So are urban fantasy books with kick ass heroines. I’m just saying.
Remember to head over to Constantine and Baryeh’s blogs once you have finished reading my review of Maggie for Hire.

The Blurb
When monsters appear on Earth, Maggie MacKay is on the job. No one is better at hauling the creepy crawlies back where they belong. No one, that is, except Maggie's dad, who vanished in the middle of an assignment. Now, an elf named Killian has shown up with a gig. Seems Maggie's uncle teamed up with the forces of dark to turn Earth into a vampire convenience store, serving bottomless refills on humans. Ah, family...

The only hope for survival lies in tracking down two magical artifacts and a secret that disappeared with Maggie's dad.

WARNING: This book contains cussing, brawling, and unladylike behavior. Proceed with caution.
My Review
I liked the concept of Maggie being a magical tracker. It reminded me of female bounty hunter books, only she was really adept at her work. The story entertained me, making me laugh in parts. I appreciated that Maggie wasn’t invincible, knew it, and acted accordingly.

I didn’t see any chemistry between Maggie and Killian even though it was intimated by several of the secondary characters (who I loved). The two seemed more like they would be good friends than anything else, and they definitely worked well together. Killian was a sweetie where Maggie had a hard as nails edge to her. As an elf, I thought he would have been more powerful, and dare I say it, helpful.

I really liked the way the book ended. That’s all I’m saying about that.

I give this book three and a half church shaped chocolate bars.

Agent query response: “Publishing is subjective.”

via GIPHY

The full quote from an agent I recently queried was: “As you know, publishing is subjective and it's entirely possible you'll find another agent able to prove me wrong.”

Just like all things writing related, the process of finding an agent has been an exercise in skin toughening. So far all I have gotten are rejections with the same general statement about subjectivity. But I know (said with hand fisted in the air and true belief) that I will get someone who likes the book and wants to be my agent. Not only that, but they will work their behinds off to get the book a great deal. Henceforth proving those nay sayers  wrong.

In the meantime I am revising the story, layering it with drama and having yet another beta reader take a look at it before sending it out to another round of agents. Wish me luck.

This post was sparked by a book club that I belong to. We read a very highly anticipated book of short stories. Most of the stories were speculative fiction, which was outside of my comfort zone and yet because the writing and storytelling was good, I still enjoyed most of the stories. Basically the ones I could understand.

Anyway, the group seemed to have disliked the book and I can’t understand how they could have such strong negative emotions about it.

And then the comment from the agents hit me.

Subjectivity.

It comes as a part of life. Everything we do, see, touch, etc. has a subjective connotation to it because our perspective is the only one that is who we are. This is why a few reviewers will detest a book that so many others loved. It’s a part of life, just like taxes (paying or evading).

Other people’s opinions, whether good or bad, can’t be taken personally. In the end it is the individual’s own feeling on the topic that counts.

Lesson learned. Hopefully, I’ll accept it as my true belief so that the rejections that are part of being an author don’t hit so hard.

Exceptional #LAPLoveNotes #Romance @Nana Prah

Welcome to Love Notes.

“I don’t understand how you can’t see how exceptional you are.” He whispered in her ear.
“If you had known them—”
He spun her around, keeping his hands on her upper arms. “I know you. I’ve experience your glowing personality and have had the chance to be touched by it.” He shook his head. “I don’t know why you were left behind. But I’m not sorry you were. You have so much to offer the world. Your work is not done. Deep down, you know it. Otherwise you wouldn’t have been the strong woman standing before me today.”
Soft lips pressed against her forehead and the dam of tears broke like they hadn’t in years.
“Let it out, princess. I’m here for you.” Akin rocked, and rubbed her back while she wept.

Oh, Nana. That's my name!

All about the amazing name Nana
Many people in the US associate nana with music. How many songs have you heard with nana in it? Loads.

When Rhiana sings: Oh, na na.
I respond: That’s my name. Instead of What;s my name?

The name Nana may be exotic or grandparentish most of the world, but in Ghana, calling out the name Nana in a crowd will get a lot of heads turning in your direction.

When I first started writing I had to decide which name I’d use. Would I use my own or a pseudonym. I chose my own because I love it so much. I have three names – technically one is a title of sorts. Nana Araba Prah

In Ghana many people are named after the day they were born. We have lots of other names, too, but you'll find these to be the most common. Since I am a Fante by tribe I will share those, but many of the other tribes have similar names and the names can differ in spelling even within a tribe. Things change when you travel to the North of Ghana, though.

Day
Female
Male
Sunday
Esi
Kwesi
Monday
Adwoa
Kodwo
Tuesday
Araba / Abena
Kobina
Wednesday
Ekua
Kweku
Thursday
Aba / Yaa
Ekow / Yaw
Friday
Efua
Kofi
Saturday
Ama
Kwamena

With a population of 28 million you can see how things would get confusing when people have similar Ghanaian names. We have titles to help differentiate, especially when they are born on the same day in the same family. The title may also denote that the person was named after a family member.

There are many titles, but a couple are Nana and Maame for females and Uncle and Paapa for males.
Nana is common among both males and females.

So when it came to choosing my author name I went for the most simple and popular of my names. The one that everyone in the US called me when I lived there because they could pronounce it. Nana Prah. There are so many published authors from Ghana with the first name of Nanal. For those from the rest of the world the name may seem unique (unless talking about grandmothers) but it’s not. It is actually the title of royalty.

Some Nana authors that come to mind.

The revelation #LAPLoveNotes #Romance @Nana Prah

Welcome to Love Notes.
This is a weekly meme where writers share six lines from their work-in-progress or published story.

This week I'm sharing from His Defiant Princess (Royal House of Saene Book #1)

“I insist that you not reveal how you met my sister while you’re here.”
Zawadi’s words snapped Amira back to the conversation.
Jake’s head tilted. “Who’s your sister?”
Zawadi waved a hand in her direction with a look of annoyance. “Amira, of course.”
Her blood ceased to flow as dread hit her. What had her brother just done?
This wasn’t how she’d wanted Jake to find out about her royal status. She should’ve told him a long time ago, but she hadn’t wanted him to treat her differently. People seemed to get irrational and behave with deference when they learned she was a real-life princess. She didn’t want that from him.
Friendship had been her goal when they’d started talking, and then, it had transitioned into a potential relationship. He’d liked the woman he’d gotten to know, not what people generally perceived a princess to be.

Is my work good enough? #writerslife

I know for sure that I'm not the only author in the world who asks this question. Lately I feel like I've been asking it more and more. I have no idea where my writer's self confidence went, but it seems to have taken a trip and left me behind. Maybe the heat in Ghana became too much. Who knows?

via GIPHY

What I do know is that sometimes being a writer sucks (I was going to add a matching cuss word to it, but I'll keep this post clean). To be honest I know I'm a good writer. I may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I have some skills. The more I write, the better I get - isn't that the law of practice or something like that?

There are so many books on the market. I'm not sure if all of them are good reads or not, but every once in a while (on the daily actually) I run into one that has me questioning if the book had a proper editor. These books cause me to question my own work. If these authors felt confident enough to put their words out into the world and promote it then what makes me think that my work is any good either?
via GIPHY

The answer comes to me every time I randomly open one of my books and am entertained (in a very good way). Yes my work intrigues me. After at least five revisions and edits (sometimes more), I get tired of my work, but after putting it aside for a while, when I return to it with fresh eyes as a published book, I know that I have put the best of my writing out there.

And then I start working on something new and that experience of doubt climbs all over me again. Grrrrr. One day I'll skip that part of the process. Hopefully one day soon. But as my friend Cathy once said, "Confidence is as slippery as a greased pig." Something that must always be worked on. I'm up for the challenge.

via GIPHY

Does your confidence ever dip (or plummet)? What do you do about it?

And just like that she knew her romantic whims about him would never come to fruition. The man was too stern to ever put her at ease.
If she were to fall for someone he’d have to be able to protect her and make her laugh. Make her melt in his arms. He’d be enough to override the hell she’d been through in the past five years. Her light in the middle of a so far grueling, debilitating tunnel.
Basic communication, which he didn’t possess, would be mandatory.

Ambitious Seduction #LAPLoveNotes #Romance @Nana Prah

Welcome to Love Notes.
This is a weekly meme where writers share six lines from their work-in-progress or published story.

This week I'm sharing from my hottest to hit the streets release this week, Ambitious Seduction. Backdrop: Kamilla and Leonardo are in competition for the coveted partner position that’s opened up. The firm is asking them to work together to keep a company on the brink of leaving them.

Kamilla pasted on her fake grin. The kind that didn’t set her eyes twinkling as she touched her palm to her chest. “I beg to differ. I would appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with Mr. Astacio. He’s been nothing but an exemplary inspiration over the years and I believe we’ll work well together, as we have previously, to keep Singleton Financial with our firm.”

Couldn’t they see her teeth gritting as she lied through them?

“Thank you so much for considering me,” she continued. “His reputation precedes him and it’s always a learning experience working by his side.”

A cough of surprise escaped Leonardo as he realized she’d gotten the drop.

Find out more about Ambitious Seduction.
