ABOUT SUZETTE D. HARRISON

Suzette D. Harrison, a native Californian and the middle of three daughters, grew up in a home where reading was required, not requested. Her literary “career” began in junior high school with the publishing of her poetry. While Mrs. Harrison pays homage to Alex Haley, Gloria Naylor, Alice Walker, Langston Hughes, and Toni Morrison as literary legends who inspired her creativity, it was Dr. Maya Angelou’s I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings that unleashed her writing. Literally. Not only is Harrison a multi-award-winning author, but she is an avid reader as well. “I’ve strayed away from the practice, but years ago I made a concerted effort to always read a book from the Harlem Renaissance writers every time I read a contemporary piece of fiction. It was my way of reaching back and balancing my literary indulgences.” Indulging her literary sweet tooth with works from her favorite authors Dianne McKinney Whetstone, Bernice McFadden, J.D. Mason, and Guy Johnson to name a few, Harrison is quick to proclaim McFadden’s Sugar as her all-time, absolute favorite novel. In addition to writing, Suzette’s career has afforded her opportunities to share her gifts through public speaking, as well as author-mentoring. A wife and mother who holds a culinary degree in Pastry & Baking, Suzette is currently cooking up her next novel…in between batches of cookies.

Review: My Joy (California Love Book 1) by Suzette D. Harrison

The Blurb
Joy Matthews isn’t afraid of risks. She’s quit her Fortune 500 job and enrolled in culinary school, chasing her dream. Joy wants her own couture cake boutique. Pursuing her dream by day, Joy pays the bills working nights at The Hourglass—an exclusive gentlemen’s club catering to patrons who enjoy "a little extra fine on a woman’s frame." Joy’s catching up to her dream when a chance encounter reconnects her with Quinton Daley, a childhood friend. Mutual attraction throws the proverbial wrench in Joy’s relationship-phobic, happily agnostic life. A goal-oriented woman who "doesn’t do men with Bible breath," Joy sees in Quinton a whole lot of what she likes but doesn’t need. Tall, chocolate-skinned, and born-again, Quinton’s Christianity poses a risk even the tenacious Joy isn’t willing to take. Quinton Daley isn’t fazed. He’s a man of faith who will willingly wait on Joy to come to God…and him. When love and lust heat up, Joy and Quinton face a predicament. Will they indulge? Or abstain? Join this wild mix of custom cakes, a saved, sanctified and sexy man, and an obsessed patron from The Hourglass who’s determined to make Joy’s life a sticky mess. It’s a recipe for a read that’s wickedly witty and delicious.

My Review
This story is incredibly entertaining. I howled with laughter throughout the book. Joy, my sweetie pie book boyfriend Quinton, and most of the secondary characters were hilarious. The use of Ebonics intermixed with proper language was a wonderful realism of the characters that brought me in to their world.

There was quite a bit of suspense in the story that had me wishing someone would end up injured. That part of the story had me upset – on more than just one level – on behalf of Joy. What I liked was that she took responsibility for her contribution to the drama that entered her life. A super strong woman who knew what she wanted in life, at least she thought she did until Quinton showed up.

The romance between Joy and Quinton had me sighing – a lot. I loved the way they each, especially Joy, grew during the time they got to know each other. An amazing romance that I really wanted to see a happy ending too, but at times wasn’t sure would happen.

Don’t get me started on the delicious deserts Joy created. I wanted to crawl into the book and grab a taste.

This book, as Joy would say, was everything. It had so much in it that I had to take my time and savor it. A wonderful romance that left me longing for Book 2 in the series. I don’t know who will star in it, but I do know that I’ll be reading it.

Be warned that issues got really heavy in this book. Highly sensitive situations brought out quite a bit of seriousness. Just letting you know that you may end up sad and angry at times while reading. Even so, it’s so worth it!

I give this five out of five oven shaped chocolate bars.

Review: The Art of Love (Decades: A Journey of African-American Romance Book 4) by Suzette D. Harrison

The Blurb
Ava Lydell is chasing her dream. A gifted artist, she’s fled the violence of the Deep South for the seduction of sunny California. As luck would have it, the economic crisis of The Great Depression interferes with her hopes and plans. Without patronage and reliable sales, her fledgling art studio fails. Now, she faces poverty, eviction…and the distraction of a mysterious, young stranger engaged in a questionable trade that delivers danger to Ava’s front door.

In an age of Prohibition and poverty, Chase Jenkins has more than most Colored men. He’s savvy, successful, and hazardously employed. A bootlegger living on the wrong side of the law, he’s determined to discover who murdered his baby brother. He has no time for diversions. Especially one packaged in the form of a “midnight” beauty with sultry lips and curvaceous hips. Unable to deny her allure, he involves himself in her affairs despite better judgment. What begins as a crisis quickly becomes a risky romance. Join Chase and Ava on their journey to outlive danger and indulge in the art of love.

My Review
Ms. Harrison knows how to throw a reader back in time and keep them there in a fantastic story. From the descriptions of the scenes, clothing, and even the vehicles, I was flung into the past as I read Chase and Ava’s romance.

Ava is a confident woman filled with fire, sass, courage and talent. She knew exactly who she was and what she wanted even though she didn’t know how to get there with her art. The book initially meets her in an argument and that’s how we get to know her throughout the story, not afraid to stand up for what’s hers. She had a true grit and strength, straight as an arrow with her personal morals without being overly judgmental when it came to other people’s lives. I really enjoyed this about her because it showed her tolerance for the way other people lived their lives and how she could still remain strong in her beliefs.

Chase – oh my goodness! The man was fine, smart, funny and just plain delicious. He’d taken risks in life and regretted that he’d lost his baby brother in the process, but not how he’d lived. Chase was a multi-dimensional character who swept me up with his charm. The kind of man I wanted Ava to end up with (but honestly wanted to keep for myself – a right and proper book boyfriend). He really knew how to handle himself. He made me sigh with his romantic gestures. Such a tough sweetie.

The twists, turns and revelations in the story made it a real page turner. A wonderful story that I hope continues with a couple of secondary characters that I wanted to see happily in love.
I give this book five out of five rose shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Love Notes (Equilibrium Book 1) by Christina C. Jones

The Blurb
Love that says something, instead of just looking like it.

Love you can always trust to feel like home.

For both of them, it’s something that has always been just outside of their peripheral, something to be observed rather than experienced. A depth of feeling reserved for people who were “into” that, those with a different outlook, those more… deserving.

Until their paths cross.

Lines are crossed.

And maybe the stars are crossed too, because the connection and chemistry are so off the charts that they can’t stay away from each other, can’t avoid it... even if they think they should.

My review
The books I have read by Ms. Jones have all been amazing and Love Notes was no exception. After reading the blurb I expected a highly emotional book, which I got, but not in the way I had anticipated. Jules is an amazing heroine. I really liked that she is pure confidence. She believed in herself and her talent and took a risk on showcasing both. She had a past which made her who she is and it was good to see her grow even further.

The passion between Jules and Troy was absolutely amazing. From the moment they first meet, the sparks flew.  They just seemed to belong together, even though they attempted to resist it. The secondary characters were highly entertaining. I’m looking forward to reading a story or two based on them.

My single complaint about the book is that I got a little lost with the slang in the dialogue. I caught up eventually, but it took me out of the story as I tried to figure out what they were expressing. Other than that I found the novel to be absolutely fantastic.

I give this book five out of five camera shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Taffy by Suzette D. Harrison

The Blurb
Welcome to the sleepy, all-Black southern town of Bledsoe, where Colored residents proudly declare “ain’t nothing white here ‘cept milk and teeth.” It’s 1935. A press-and-curl costs a quarter. Records play on phonographs. And a telephone is a luxury.

Meet twenty-three-year-old Taffy Bledsoe Freeman. She doesn’t need her gift of second sight to know her “mockery of a marriage” to a man twice her age is far from good. After a seven-year exile Up North, Taffy travels down-home to the small town bearing her family’s name, plotting her escape from a marriage not worth the price of a press-and-curl. She only needs to retrieve the son her husband banished to her parents’ care, before boarding a train headed for the Windy City filled with liberty and opportunity. Instead, Taffy stumbles into Roam Ellis: her long-lost love and the man Taffy meant to marry.

Twenty-six-year-old Roam Ellis is a “broad-shouldered, hard-bodied” Pullman porter riding the rails coast-to-coast, outrunning the bitter heartbreak Taffy left behind. Now, after a seven-year absence, Roam is face-to-face with his first love. Anger ignites. Old wounds are exposed. But when pain subsides, passion rises, thrusting Taffy and Roam into a hurricane of buried secrets and lies.

Reminiscent of the works of Bernice McFadden, Bertice Berry, and Andrea Smith (The Sisterhood of Blackberry Corner) this Historical Romance is bathed in southern lore and sweeping imagery. Lyrical and powerful, Taffy is a story of restoration and redemption that you won’t soon forget.

My Review
This is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve read in a very long time. The vividness of the writing was amazing and the tale was told descriptively without being overbearing or boring. The story held a plethora of emotion, dealing head on with issues that made me angry to those which gave me hope.

Taffy was an incredible woman who’d had to tolerate hardship which had made her grow up quickly. As the story progressed her strength, beauty, and good humor shone through although things had been immensely hard for her since she was sixteen.

I adored Roam. Absolutely loved him. He was everything a man should be, including forgiving. His younger self had a hard time dealing with what had happened with Taffy and I couldn’t blame him. His older self was perfection. A strong black man in a time when it was difficult to be one. He knew who he was as an individual, had goals, and worked to reach them, all while loving life (sometimes a little too much). His sense of humor, intelligence, and passionate nature made him one fine man.

The paranormal aspect of the book was intriguing. Taffy’s gift of sight and the story behind how she received it added strength and depth to the story and to the town of Bledsoe.

The one thing I didn’t care for was the head hopping in the book. It took a while to get used to. Other than that minor flaw I found it to be a fabulous novel. Absolutely stunning.

I give this book five out five  train shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Breaking All the Rules (Second Chances Book 1) by Rhonda McKnight

Deniece Malcolm is shocked and heartbroken when she finds out her baby sister, Janette, is marrying Terrance Wright, because she was the one who was supposed to marry him! Everybody knows there’s a rule about dating exes. Janette is pregnant and not only is this wedding happening, but Deniece has to arrange the festivities.

Deniece’s feelings and pride are hurt, but surprisingly, Terrance’s younger, sexier, cousin, Ethan Wright, is there to provide a listening ear and a strong bicep to cry on. Ethan’s interested in Deniece, but she has a rule about dating younger men. Despite her resistance, things heat up between them and Deniece begins to wonder if it’s time to break a few rules of her own.

My Review
It’s nice to see a book featuring an older woman who has succeeded in her career and lives in a state of confidence, even though she hasn’t had an easy life. Deniece is not a complainer, she’s someone who knows how to get the job done. That’s admirable, but it didn’t stop me from questioning why she wasn’t angrier at her sister and ex-boyfriend. Instead she drops her own work to help her sister plan the wedding. Everyone in the story (along with myself), except the sister is confused about the situation.

Ethan is a dynamic and incredibly sweet man. He possesses so many layers which I enjoy discovering. The fact that he’s younger didn’t disturb me at all because he was mature and worldly. What I thought Deniece should’ve had a problem with (although not insurmountable) was that he was her ex’s cousin. Considering what Deniece was going through with her sister, it was a stronger point of conflict for me.

This Christian story is well written, engaging, and left me with a very happy feeling.

I give this four out of five car shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Taste for Temptation (Temptation 1) by Phyllis Bourne

The Blurb
Only one man can satisfy her craving…
No one dumps Brandi Collins! After being left at the altar, the Nashville high school teacher plans to get back at her ex by undergoing a major transformation. But how is she supposed to shed those extra pounds with that intoxicating aroma wafting into her condo? And the tempting smell of mouth-watering chocolate has nothing on the handsome hunk who’s creating the irresistible confections.
Adam Ellison has given up everything for his dream of winning the International Chocolate Pastry Competition. His voluptuous new neighbor knocking on his door at three in the morning is a distraction he doesn’t need!
Now only one thing will satisfy Adam’s craving for Brandi. But what happens when she discovers her struggling pastry chef is really the heir to a multi-million-dollar corporate empire? Will Brandi still be there intoxicating him with her kisses…or will Adam lose his chance for a lifetime of love?

My Review
I’m a sucker for romances that feature chocolate. Not only did the treats that Adam created sound irresistible, but he did too. Yes he was handsome, rich, and could bake up a storm, but he wasn’t a perfect man. He had issues which drove him and that made him a more enticing character.

Brandi was an amazing heroine. Her relationship with her mother was an interesting one and I felt badly for what she had to contend with and often times wondered how she was able to. But she was a strong woman and that made her endure. I loved the heat between Adam and Brandi and rooted for them from their first encounter.

One thing I also have to say is that the writing was amazing. It was descriptive, but not burdened, and the images it left in my mind still have me chuckling.

I give this book five out of five cake shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Bending The Rules (The Wright Brothers 3) by Christina C. Jones

The Blurb
Justin and Toni were friends.
Besties, with a whole list of life rules developed over a friendship that started when they were kids. As long as they stuck to the rules, even when they blended a business relationship into the friendship, things went off without a hitch.

But then one of them broke the rules - It was Justin. Justin broke the rules- and Toni has been mad about it ever since.

She’s spent the last several years traveling the globe to cultivate her business, but now she’s back in town. Her only goals? Help her parents with “Mr. Bestseller’s” signing at the store, help them pack up their house to sell, and get out of town without too much interaction with her former best friend.

Mr. Bestseller has different goals.

He broke the rules - no getting around that, and he’s not trying to. His main goal now that Toni is finally home is to get her to hear him out… and get his friend back.

Neither of them anticipated that the rift in their relationship would be the catalyst for seeing each other in a whole different light. But now that they do, they’re wondering if it may be time to make some amendments to those rules.

Or at the very least… bend a few.

My Review
The Wright Brothers’ trilogy has come to an end and I am sad, even though I loved this story. The trope of friends to lovers is one of my absolute favorites. The romance between Toni and Justin was gradual, and very unsure, but perfectly timed. Ms. Jones even threw a bit of a mystery in there by making us wonder just what Justin did to anger Toni to the point of not speaking to him for so long (it was bad).

I enjoyed the aspect that both Justin and Toni were part of the publishing world and highly successful in their own fields. The hero and heroine had a lot in common and conversations about their past experiences had them laughing a lot. It was their present experiences that had me chuckling most.

A fantastic story and series. I give this book five out of five book shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Breathless (Old West 2) by Beverly Jenkins #AARomance

The Blurb
A strong-willed beauty finds herself in the arms of the handsome drifter from her past, in this second book in the sizzling series set in the Old West, from USA Today Bestselling Author Beverly Jenkins

As manager of one of the finest hotels in Arizona Territory, Portia Carmichael has respect and stability—qualities sorely missing from her harsh childhood. She refuses to jeopardize that by hitching herself to the wrong man. Suitors are plentiful, but none of them has ever looked quite as tempting as the family friend who just rode into town…and none has looked at her with such intensity and heat.

Duchess. That’s the nickname Kent Randolph gave Portia when she was a young girl. Now she’s a stunning, intelligent woman—and Kent has learned his share of hard lessons. After drifting through the West, he’s learned the value of a place to settle down, and in Portia’s arms he’s found that and more. But convincing her to trust him with her heart, not just her passion, will be the greatest challenge he’s known—and one he intends to win…

My Review
Oh my goodness, this was a fan yourself kind of story. As Ms. Jenkin’s books tend to be, it was steeped in history, this time about women’s suffrage so learning took place while I became enamored with Portia and Kent. They were spectacular, each possessed a strength of will and an ability to bend and grow. The heat between them sparked immediately, but there was a slow build to the blaze. A perfect romance between two remarkable characters.

I give this book five out of five horse shaped chocolate bars.

Review: A Passionate Kiss (The Bennett Triplets) by Sharon C. Cooper #AARomance

The Blurb
Retired Marine, Mason Bennett, has two goals: adjust to civilian life and keep drama out of it. His focus is on his role as part-owner, along with his siblings, of Atlanta’s hottest nightclub. However, his attention shifts when the woman he has loved like a sister reenters his life and thoughts of a passionate kiss they shared hijacks his mind. Their connection is explosive. Feelings he’s tried to deny come to the forefront, and he’s tempted to do something he thought he would never do—cross that line from friends to lovers.

TV news anchor, London Alexander, is back home in Atlanta and ready to start a new chapter in her life. This time she hopes her future includes Mason, the man she has loved forever. She’s ready to step over the forbidden line that he’s drawn in their relationship.

Will taking a chance on love lead to a happily-ever-after? Or will risking their friendship leave them both with broken hearts?

My Review
This book made me clutch my chest and sigh with pleasure. It had two of my favorite themes – friends to lovers and ex-military turned security. There was a point here when I thought London was taking her and Mason’s friendship one way (which shouldn’t have surprised me, but it did), Mason swerved and took them down a totally different, better path.

The passion between London and Mason was so intense that I kept wondering why it took him so long to figure out that London was in love with him. They were perfect for each other.

I give this book five out of five dress shaped chocolate bars.

Isn't she (and it) pretty? A Perfect Caress #AARomance #Romance

When I first received my box of glorious books from Harlequin the first person I thought to send a copy to was Empi Baryeh. Not only are we in the same country, but we have hung out several times, she has helped me with my writing and book promotion, I love her writing, and we are review partners along with Constantine.

Upon reaching Accra and picking up my books (and dancing to the joyous music only I could hear), I headed to Empi's office and dropped off a copy. Here she is holding my cover. Aren't both of them stunning.

A Perfect Caress will be released in paperback on November 22nd and in e-book on December 1st. I'm excited for both. In the meantime you can preorder your copy and wait anxiously for it to be delivered to your e-reader.

Review: A Passionate Love by Delaney Diamond

The Blurb
Simone Brooks and Cameron Bennett should not be together. She’s a wealthy socialite looking for a suitable husband. A man with the right pedigree and an economic status that matches her own. He’s part owner of the hottest nightclub in Atlanta with his siblings. Someone who loves cooking, the outdoors, and women, not necessarily in that order.

After one night together, their sizzling chemistry makes it difficult to stay away. Then comes the hard part—navigating their differences to salvage a relationship that, while it may be imperfect, overflows with love and passion.

My Review
I have yet to read a Delaney Diamond book  I didn't like so I had high expectations when I picked up A Passionate Love. I was not disappointed.

My biggest question as I read through the book and fanned myself as things got hot between Simone and Cameron was how could these two people from succinctly different worlds maintain a relationship? Cameron is a hard working club owner who is, to be honest, a bit frugal in how he spends his money while Simone has always had money and knows how to buy, buy, buy and buy some more. Money can be a huge conflict between couples and I loved the way their issues were worked out in a realistic way through open communication, sheer will, and of course, love.

I give this book five out five cuff linked shaped chocolate bars.

Book Review: Ruined by Chanta Rand

The Blurb
Philanderer. Tomcat. Skirt chaser. Heartbreaker. These are all labels thrust upon four-time divorcĂ©, Gerrod Stone. He's ruined any chance he has for a relationship. For years, he’s acted like a dog, treating women like playthings. Now that he’s reached his 50s even he’s tired of his shenanigans. After a life-threatening event makes him reevaluate his life, he swears off all women and self-imposes a vow of celibacy. He refuses to date any woman until he has more to offer.

Full-figured business owner, Swan Peterson is finally living the life she always wanted. Free of her neglectful ex-husband and left an empty-nester when her daughter goes to college, she’s ready to let her hair down and have some fun. She’s starving for the affection of a real man. When she meets handsome Gerrod Stone on a photo shoot, she knows he’s just the man to sink her teeth into. There’s only one problem. Gerrod doesn’t seem to want her. She uses every trick in her box of goodies to ensnare him, but just when she thinks she’s caught him in her web, a host of other characters show up, determined to ruin her plans.

My Review
I found this mature romance to be highly entertaining. I liked that the hero and heroine had lived full lives before meeting each other. Swan had overcome issues with her ex-husband in order to become a huge success and I appreciated that. I liked the fact that Gerrod was trying to be an honorable man for once in his life only to have Swan try to seduce him.

This was a stand-alone, but I would’ve liked to have read the first book in the series because the characters and the glimpses into their story intrigued me. I guess it’s not too late for me to go back and read Enticed, is it?

I give this book four out of five horse shaped chocolate bars.

Book Review: His Loving Caress by Candace Shaw #AARomance

The Blurb
Hearts in harmony?

Instead of falling apart when her childhood sweetheart chose his music career over marriage, Elle Lauren fled to Paris to study fashion design. Her stunning wedding gowns now give other brides the happily-ever-after she didn't have. Ignoring Braxton Chase's long-distance apologies has been easy. But meeting him once more stirs the deep longings and desires that a decade has not erased.

Braxton walked away from the pressure to marry at a young age, and he's regretted breaking Elle's heart ever since. From the moment he sees her again at his Atlanta jazz club, he knows he wants more than forgiveness—he wants a second chance at the body-and-soul connection that they once had. Can he convince her to trust the sweet, seductive melody of their lost love?

My Review
I’m still smiling after closing the book yesterday. Such a sweet, romantic story. I’m never sure how I feel about exes getting together, after all they broke up for a reason. I had wanted to dislike Braxton for dumping Lauren at the altar, but I’d already learned to like him from the previous books in the series. Even if I hadn’t read the prior books, I’d still like him. He’s an ambitious, intelligent, musically talented man, but most of all he was remorseful over jilting Lauren all those years ago.

Lauren was a woman of power and class. Instead of pining over her lost love for the past ten years, she made a name for herself in the fashion world. As they say, the heart wants what the heart wants, and Lauren had always loved Braxton, even when he did her wrong by leaving her at the altar.

I liked that the couple had known each other all of their lives and were both genuinely good people. I’ve enjoyed every book in this series and am expecting more.

I give this book five out of five piano shaped chocolate bars.

Review: One of the Guys by Delaney Diamond #AARomance

The Blurb
He makes her feel like a woman…

Mechanic Ronnie Taylor spends most of her time with men. As such, she’s always been tough, but Diego Molina makes her feel the opposite of tough. The big Cuban is brash, bold, and gets under her skin. She finally has to admit the reason he annoys her isn’t because she dislikes him. It’s because she likes him a little too much.

When Diego turns the tables on Ronnie, he uncovers the sensual woman hiding underneath. But past regrets threaten to derail their new relationship. Before they can get to forever, they must trust that they’ve found what they’ve been looking for all along.

My Review
I have read an enjoyed every book in this series. I really liked that Ronnie and Diego had known each other for a year, but even though they’d worked together other on car projects, they knew very little about each other. And yet the attraction always loomed between them until it exploded when they finally got together.

Diego was protective of Ronnie (on occasion a bit overprotective), but it was sweet. I wouldn’t have thought that the backstory of such a perfect man would’ve been so intense, but Ms. Diamond surprised me with it.

I give this book four out of five wrench shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Her Kind of Man (Edge of Scandal #3) #AARomance by Elle Wright

The Blurb
When Mr. Right is oh so wrong

I'll never let you go . . . Allina had always dreamed of hearing those words. But when her fiancĂ©, Isaac, utters them, it isn't a promise-it's a threat. Scared and confused, with only moments before the wedding, Allina knows what she must do. Forget walking down the aisle; it's time to run. Back to Michigan. Back to Kent.

Kent has loved Allina for longer than he can remember. Out of respect for their friendship, he's never crossed the line, but when she turns up on his doorstep wearing her torn, tearstained wedding gown, the fire inside him ignites. He'll do whatever it takes to make Allina feel safe-like the beautiful, desirable woman she is. But as Kent and Allina grow closer, and their passion pushes deeper, it's clear that something bigger than a botched wedding still lingers between them . . .

My Review
This book can be read as a stand alone.

I enjoyed the first two books of the series, but I loved this one the most. I honestly didn’t think I would like Allina as much as I did. Of the three women (Syd – so dramatic, Cali – tough as nails and awesome), I found Allina to be the odd one out in the first two books. She bordered on boring for me. Boy was I wrong. Yes she’s a good girl, but she has strength, grit, and courage to spare. She’d been through a lot in her life and her current fiancĂ© doesn’t make things any easier.

Kent was one of my favorite characters from the beginning of the series. He’s sexy, intelligent, charming, kick ass, and did I mention sexy? He was perfect for Allina, and their transition from friends to lovers was so natural. And it was so romantic. All of it.

Now for the bad news. Allina did something that had me screaming at her because I thought it was a dumb move. The explanation she gave for her actions (after the fact) made it more understandable.
All three books in the series were wonderful and I highly recommend reading them. I’m hoping for a fourth, but we’ll see.

I give this book five out of five cake shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Any Way You Want It (Moments in Maplesville #6) by Farrah Rochon #AARomance

The Blurb
Nyree Grant is determined to hold the grand opening of the Any Way You Want It Salon and Spa on the birthday of her aunt, who left Nyree the inheritance that made it possible for her to follow her dream. But finding a contractor to renovate the old building on such short notice has proven to be a problem. Enter Dale Chauvin, former local football standout and current star of her late-night fantasies.

Once a shoe-in for the NFL, Dale Chauvin has spent the past five years working construction jobs in Maplesville while guarding a secret he’s held since college. But a new renovation project is shoving him out of his rut and testing the limits of both his management skills and his patience. Though his biggest obstacle may be fighting off the feelings he’s starting to have for his new boss.

My Review
I have read every Moments in Maplesville novella and loved them all. I’ve learned over the years that there comes a point in every series where you don’t enjoy the book you’re reading as much as you did the others. This is the book in that series for me. It’s not that I didn’t like it, because I did, but I found something missing.

In the beginning I kept wondering where the chemistry was between Nyree and Dale. I had to wait a little while before it manifested. On a good note, Nyree is an amazing character. One of those power women who’s a little too stubborn for her own good at times, but still manages to prevail because she knows she can.

I have faith in Ms. Rochon’s story telling skills and have already preordered her next book, Any Time You Need Me, which looks delicious.

I give this book three out of five shampoo bottle shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased this book from Amazon.

Excerpt
Allina got up and carried her dishes over to the sink. She turned on the faucet and filled up the basin with water. “I’m going to clean up and get ready to go to the store.”
He finished up his plate and joined her at the sink. Not thinking, he dropped his mug into the dishwater, splashing the soapy water on Allina. She screeched and stumbled back. He reached for her, sensing she was getting ready to fall. Instead of preventing her fall, she ended up pulling him with her and they both landed on the floor, her on her back and him on his side.
“Ouch,” she groaned from her where she lay on the tile. “That hurt.” She wiped her face and pushed her hair back, leaving a few suds on her face.
He chuckled. “That was . . . clumsy.”
She laughed then. “It was crazy. How did I fall? There was no water on the floor.” She pointed at him. “It was your fault.”
He grabbed her finger. “It was not my fault you can’t stay on your feet.”
She flicked some remaining soap on him. It was a running joke with their crew. Syd was dramatic, Cali had no filter, and Allina was clumsy as hell. It didn’t matter where they were or what they were doing, Allina always seemed to get hurt.
Before he knew it, they were both laughing in earnest. She turned to him. “I needed this.”
He tucked a piece of hair behind her ear. “Glad I could help. I’ve never met anyone who is more accident-prone than you.”
She grinned, her eyes gleaming. “Hey. Don’t say that.”
He stood up and held out a hand to her. When she placed her tiny palm in his, he pulled her to her feet.
Brushing off her clothes, she murmured, “My body is al- ready sore from that run. Now my back is throbbing.”
“Maybe you should go lie down for a little bit before we go to the store,” he suggested. “I have a heating pad some- where if you need it.”
She waved him off. “I’m good.” Peering up at him, she smiled again. A wide grin. “I need to keep moving.”
Kent observed her. Her cheeks were flushed and her eyes dancing and he found himself inching closer to her. A piece of her hair was stuck to her forehead and he pushed it to the back.
“I must look crazy,” she said, smoothing a hand over her hair.
One of the things Kent found so attractive about Allina was her sultry, deep voice. She talked like she was singing a lullaby. It was low, even, and sexy as hell. And what made it even better was she had no idea it could have an effect on a man.
As if he had no power or control to stop himself, he leaned closer. She peered up at him and froze. Instead of retreating, she stayed where she was, her eyes on his.
The air changed in that instant. He brushed her cheek with his thumb and she gasped. Their noses were almost touching. He knew he should step back, walk away, but he couldn’t. His body had a mind of its own.
His nose bumped into hers. Her breath still smelled like the honey from her tea. It was warm against his skin. He wanted to kiss her, more in that moment than ever before. Then her lips brushed against his. It wasn’t a full-on kiss, but enough to make him want more. He framed her face with his hands and kissed the corner of her mouth, enjoying her sharp intake of breath. She squeezed his biceps, her nails digging into the sensitive skin.
“Kent,” she whispered. “Are you sure you want to do this?”
“Do you want me to?” he asked, unable to keep his eyes off her mouth. It was amazing how one simple touch had opened up the box that labeled them “very close friends.” He imagined how it would feel to really taste her, to feel her tongue against his, to touch her the way he wanted.
But then where would that leave them? Confused and awkward around each other? Allina wasn’t just any woman. He couldn’t do her first and ask the hard questions later, be- cause she deserved better than that. They had never really talked about sex with each other before, but knowing her the way he did, he figured she was careful about who and what she did. Being with her, or even kissing her, was a game changer. But, damn-it, I want to.
Sighing, he stepped back. He scratched his head. “I’m sorry. This isn’t right. We better get going.”

Then he left her standing there in the kitchen.

ABOUT ELLE WRIGHT
Born and raised in Southeast Michigan near Ann Arbor, Elle learned the importance of reading from her mother. It was also her mother who, later on in her life, gave Elle her first romance novel:  Indigo by Beverly Jenkins.  From that moment on, Elle became a fan of Ms. Jenkins for life and a lover of all things romance.  An old journal she wrote back in college became her first book (which she still wants to publish one day).

Heat of Passion (California Desert Dreams #3) by Pamela Yaye #AARomance

The Blurb
Their affair is this exclusive resort's best-kept secret

Beautiful, ambitious Robyn Henderson fought hard for her place in the sun. Now Belleza Resort's head event planner is getting ready to pull off the charity event of the season. But when a series of bizarre incidents befall the desert retreat and suspicion points at LA restaurateur Sean Parker, Robyn is convinced he's innocent. And now her boss's brother–and secret crush–is drawing her into a sizzling taboo affair.

Sean's return to the family fold is fraught with pitfalls, especially when he's wrongly accused. His most passionate ally is his sister's best friend, a woman Sean has crushed on for years. Aching to make their undercover romance public, he fights to clear his name. As a vengeful adversary plots to destroy his family's lasting legacy, Sean must decide where his future lies. But can he also convince Robyn to trust in their love?

My Review
I absolutely  love a friends to lovers romances and Ms. Yaye certainly delivered. From one night where the romance is sparked between the two friends (who’ve been secretly crushing on each other) all the way to the drama that tears them apart and brings them together for the happily ever after.

Robyn isn’t like her two best friends who were born into money. She had to scrape her way through life in order to get to her position as a premier event planner for the hotel. The fact that things weren’t handed to her gave me an added respect for her. Although Sean possesses more than his fair share of pigheadedness, he’s also sweet and knows a good thing in Robyn when he finds it. The sneaking around to be together so that their affair stays a secret adds to the dramatics of the story.

This book can be read as a standalone and I found this series unique because the three books were written by different authors, but they were able to keep the personalities and interconnectedness of the character’s relationships consistent.

I purchased my copy from Amazon.

I give this book five out of five cake shaped chocolate bars.
