Y is for “You are out of your mind"

How many times have you read a book and thought the character was crazy, not put in an asylum crazy, but  Dude, you are out of your mind! What the hell are you thinking? kind of crazy? Sometimes the character has a momentary lapse in judgment while sometimes the character just has no common sense. No matter what the cause, the action makes for a more dramatic and interesting book, at least for me.

I like reading a book where at least once in the novel I question the individual’s sanity. It makes them more real to me since I tend to question my own sanity and that of the people I hang around with on a daily basis.

Does it entertain you when a character does something crazy or does it just annoy you?

  1. That has happened so many times. I find it very interesting when characters do something crazy, it makes me laugh and I look forward to what happens next.

  2. Yes! I love it when characters step out of my comfort zone and do things I wouldn't do in a million years.

    1. That's because you have more sense. It's interesting to see the consequences though.

  3. There's a good reason why Silver Linings Playbook is currently my favorite romantic comedy. Can you guess what it is? ;)

    1. I'm laughing. I really wanted to read that book (or see the movie). The guy is nuts. Thanks for stopping by Michael.

  4. Yes and I think the reason is what Lynda said. If a character does something you would never do (but might like to) you can live it and do it through them. That's what's so great about books ;)

  5. If you've read The Twilight Series, then you'll see crazy. Why would a young girl want, want to be changed into a Vampire? I guess love can drive you insane. As much as I liked the books, it's kind of a nutty...

    1. I'm thinking it's because she's a YOUNG girl. Us older women are not that crazy.

  6. Whenever the writers has to have something unbelievable happen to keep the story going I feel a bit let down.

  8. I like it when you read along and think to yourself this character better do something crazy or he/she must die, then as the book progresses it only gets worse but eventually she'll snap and do something out of her character that would define her. And you go "YES!" didn't think she'll have guts. Like in my new novel the heroine would do anything to please her boss (she's all career), but by the end she tells him exactly where to shove it and walks away.

    1. Hey there Zrinka. What's this new novel you're talking about? Telling a boss to shove takes guts.
