Do
you ever find yourself using a word so much that people threaten to report you
to the word abuse police if you don’t stop?
My overused word used to be interesting. Now it is great, but I’m
working on it. I used to overuse it because it is the perfect word for so many
different situations.
1.
When something is fascinating in a good way
2.
A conversation that ends with an individual saying something meaningless, but
they expect a response
3.
The topic is so far over your head that you’d have to fly to catch it
4.
When you have slept through a person’s speech and you need to praise them in
some way without entrapping yourself
5.
When you are very uncomfortable with a stranger
6.
As a sarcastic response (it must be said slowly)
This is an interesting post! :D
ReplyDeleteAgree, it is the most overused word! :)
Good one for the theme :)
Thanks Shipla. Interesting comment.
DeleteI tend to overuse many words. Interesting is one of them, it's a good word. Interesting relays a plethora of meanings as you know. Most of the time I don't even realize the overuse until I check over my ms.
ReplyDeleteOh, I usually only use verbally. It's harder when you use it in your work, then you have to find and equally fantastic word to replace your overused word.
DeleteThat is very true. "Interesting" is especially used when you have a negative view of someone/something and you don't want to hurt their feelings about it. "Interesting" is neutral, like Switzerland. :D
ReplyDeleteSweet post.
Thanks Aneta. Like Switzerland- LOL.
DeleteI have no problem with the overuse of words, as long as it does not get out of hand. What can be annoying is when certain self-appointed grammar police extol how they are some much more adept with the English language, yet they have certain words they overuse themselves. I have seen articles in academic journals do this.

Those grammar police can be annoying. It's worse when they are with you live and in person.
