Guaranteed fighting words- two words you will never read in a romance novel

There are two words in most cultures that will make a person forget that he or she is a pacifist at heart and instead want to rip someone’s tongue out of their mouth. These have been the ultimate fighting words since I can remember and I can’t imagine that it will change any time soon.

I have never encountered these words in a romance novel during a couple’s argument, but I’m sure that if they were uttered the romance novel would end abruptly and it would be changed to ‘chick lit’ because there would be no happy romantic ending.
What are these two words you ask with impatience? The two most insulting words in all of history are:
                Your Mother (Enlish)
                Yo Mama   (Slang)
                Su Mama   (Spanish)
               Wo Mama (Twi)
I can see people nodding their heads as they read. No other words need to be added to make the insult worse. We all love our mother’s so much that any insult against her is like a quadruple insult against us because she is where we came from.
Notice that we never use ‘Your Daddy’ as an insult. It’s just not the same.
Am I wrong? Is there an insult that is greater than ‘Your mother?’
Let me know by  leaving a comment, I love to read what people think, but please keep it clean.

  1. very strange indeed that 'yo daddy' doesn't illicit the same kind of reaction. It's like you have to qualify it to make it meaningful.

  2. I have heard of marriages which broke down the moment one of the couples particularly the female insults the mother of the other.

I sure would not allow anyone disrespect or worse insult my mother, no amount of for better or worse can keep that relationship intact ever again.

    1. Thanks for commenting Lara. No one messes with the mama and gets away with it.

  3. I agree. I think women are protective of their mothers, but men don't like to think of their mothers being anything but mothers. Not women, not lovers just their 'mom'. Fun post, Nana ;)

    1. Thanks Debbie. I think women are the same. How many of us get skittish at the thought of our mom as lover? Shiver.

  4. In Croatian lots of profanity is about 'your mother", a saint someone prays to and/or God. One would think we're a nation without culture. Men especially like to curse if the task at hand isn't going smooth. Women on the other hand will call each other names in their face when they get into a fight.

  5. Nana, you said it yourself. We came from our mothers, no matter that the man put us there. The mother will carry and noursih us in their bellies for nine months and after birth the nuturing continues. They are sacred. See the way some cultures revere mother earth, 'assase yaa' It is never asaase yaw. It is the way God wants it. By our very psyche and physical natures, the feminie is also a delicate beign to be nutured, protected and cherished, Why would you insult and descrate something so precious? No one wants that.

    Very thought-provoking and interesting post.
