Doctor Comfort Djan is looking for salvation after a tragic accident, which takes her to deprived regions where her skills heal the helpless. Until Fate thrusts her as a medic on board a West African military coastal protection ship. Commander Akin Solarin wants nothing more than to do his job, especially when his medic's temporary replacement turns out to be a disconcerting woman who pushes all his buttons. He runs a tight ship, and doesn't need captivating and efficient yet aloof Comfort around to keep his heart-rate in semi-permanent overdrive.

Neither can deny the attraction between them, but navigating uncharted personal waters may be the least of their problems when confronted with bold pirate attacks and other vicious unknown dangers onboard the frigate. And when Comfort's life gets on the line, Akin knows he will do anything to save his medic and heal her battered heart in the process.

EXCERPT
Akin and Comfort hadn’t spoken since his gruff greeting when he’d escorted her to the dining hall after work. Not a word during the meal. And yet giddiness threatened to make Comfort giggle for no damn reason when they reached the deck. What was it about Akin that being with him made her feel alive? He was a man, nothing more or less. A big brutish one who commanded with fierce determination and knew how to push her buttons. Yet he’d also shown an empathetic and gentle side. At least toward her, she doubted his men ever saw that aspect of him.
She tipped her back and rotated. “There are so many stars in the sky?”
He caught her by the shoulders when she stumbled. The warmth from his large hands didn’t linger long enough before he pulled them away.
“This is far enough. Don’t get close to the rail.” His deep voice sounded near her ear, sending tingles down her neck. “We don’t want to lose you to the sea. The presence of no lights other than from us, means we can see more stars.”
Glimmering lights overtook the midnight blue dome she normal noticed when she made an effort to observe the night sky. This was different. Even the moon had its own gloriousness. She’d never seen anything more stunning in her life.
She blinked back the burn of tears as she angled her shoulders to look up at him.
Bending his knees he came closer to eye level with a deep grove between his eyes. “What’s wrong, princess?”
Her stomach flipped at the endearment. Clearing her eyes, she swiped the back of her hand at the moisture which had escaped. “It’s so damn beautiful.”
Rising to his full height he nodded. “It certainly is. The combined vastness of the sea and sky makes you realize how insignificant we really are.”

She stared upward. This time she backed into his chest and leaned on the strength he provided. His warmth seeped into her and she never wanted to leave the sanctuary of his body. When had she ever felt so safe? So connected? They stayed glued together even when a guard patrolled past.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Bella drew a heart on the back of a pale pink envelope while she sat at the small table tucked in the corner of her room. Smiling, she set down her lilac crayon, pleased that the shape of this heart hardly looked wobbly at all. She studied the assortment of stickers Mommy had given her to decorate her invitations with and picked the glittery fuchsia ones for the corners. Locking her ankles, she kicked her legs back and forth and hummed along with the music on the CD player, trying to ignore her parents shouting in the living room. “Here is my handle, here is my spout,” she muttered, sealing the envelope closed with a puffy star sticker. “Tip me over and pour me out.”
The yelling suddenly stopped, and footsteps stormed down the hall. Bella jumped when Mommy and Daddy’s bedroom door slammed shut. Pausing, she listened to the quiet, then picked up the next envelope and smiled again when she recognized the letter ‘M.’ “Mary Rose.” She snatched up the sheet of silly smiley faces and put one right below Mommy’s pretty handwriting, certain her best friend would love it.
“Bella Boop,” Daddy called, giving a quick knock on her door.
“I’m in here.”
The knob turned and Daddy walked in dressed in jeans and one of the grease smeared white T-shirts he always wore to work.
Bella picked up a sky-blue crayon. She paused as she met Daddy’s gaze and realized his brown eyes were red, the way hers looked when she scraped her knees or got shots at the doctor’s office and cried. “Are you and Mommy mad at each other?”
Daddy sat on the bed, wrinkling her Hello Kitty comforter with his weight. “No. We’re not mad at each other.”
“Mommy yelled at you. Did you leave the toilet seat up again?” She frowned, remembering the cold water she’d fallen into the other morning. “I don’t want my tushy to get wet again when I sit down.”
He closed his eyes as he laughed, but it wasn’t his regular laugh that always made her giggle.
“No, I didn’t leave the seat up.”
“Good,” she said with a decisive nod and got back to work.
“What are you doing in here?” he asked.
“Coloring my invitations. Mommy said we can bring them with us to school in the morning. Everybody gets to have one—even the boys—so we don’t hurt anyone’s feelings.”
“That’s my girl.” He winked.
She handed over one of the envelopes in her finished pile for Daddy to admire. “This one is for Clara. See how it has a letter ‘C’? That’s how I know.”
“What’s this?” Daddy pointed to the next letter in Clara’s name.
“An ‘L.’”
“Smarty-pants.”
She grinned, always loving it when he called her that. “Clara’s going to be five too. Her mommy’s bringing brownies to school next week when it’s her birthday—just like you brought in the cupcakes for me to share yesterday. Everyone liked them. Pink frosting is the best kind.”
“With purple sprinkles, right?”
“Right.” She took the invitation back and continued decorating Mary Rose’s.
“I can’t believe my girl’s almost five. You’re not a baby anymore.”
“I’m a beautiful young lady now, right?”
He sighed. “Somehow you are. Not all that long ago, I was rocking you to sleep.”
“Beautiful young ladies have pierced ears and paint their nails.” She beamed at him, thrilled that she had both after a trip to the mall and a visit to the nail painter woman Mommy knew. “And young ladies go to kindergarten when the leaves fall off the trees, right after the summer is over.”
“I guess they do.” He blew out another breath. “Will you come sit with me for a couple of minutes?”
She hesitated as she glanced from the stickers to Daddy’s sad eyes. “Okay.”
He grabbed her under the armpits of her favorite Hello Kitty pajamas and boosted her up, settling her on his thigh. “Here we go.” He wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tight.
She returned his embrace, breathing in the familiar oil smell of the garage where he fixed cars. “Is your tummy sick?”
“No, baby.” He played his hand through the curls Mommy had made at the end of her long ponytail this morning.
“Did you get a boo-boo at work?” She picked up his stained black fingers, checking for a cut.
“No, honey.” He clenched his jaw. “I have to go on a trip.”
She gasped her excitement and clapped. Daddy always took her on the best adventures. “Can I come?”
He shook his head. “Not this time.”
“We could get ice cream at the Dairy Stop,” she said in a singsong voice, hoping that would convince him to change his mind.
“I wish we could, Bella. I have to go on this trip by myself.”
She pressed her cheek to his chest. “I don’t want you to go unless I get to come too. I always come too, Daddy.”
His fingers moved through her hair again. “I know.”
“You can stay right here with me.” She leaned forward and picked up her favorite book from the pile on the nightstand. “We can read instead.”
He nuzzled his chin on top of her head, keeping her close.
She clung to him as her stomach started to hurt. Daddy never went away. He and Mommy always read her books together and took turns bringing her to school after breakfast. “Will you come back soon?”
He shook his head. “Not for a long time. Not till you’re an even bigger young lady.”
Her lips trembled as her eyes filled. “But I’ll miss you so much.”
“I’ll miss you too. I’ll think of you every day.”
“Daddy.” She sniffled. “I want you to stay.”
“I have something for you.” He grabbed something from behind his back she hadn’t noticed when he walked in and held up a small snow globe.
She took the delicate glass and studied the pretty two-story house surrounded by pine trees in the center—much bigger than the home she lived in now. “It’s so nice.”
“When you look at it, you can think of me.”
“You’ll live in there?”
He looked at the ceiling as he swallowed. “Something like that.”
She stared at the lights on in the cheerful home as the snow fell to the ground. “Will you come out for my party in a couple of days and sing ‘Happy Birthday’?”
“I can’t.”
Her shoulders sagged. “But you can come out at night and read to me and tuck me in?”
He shook his head.
Her lips trembled again, and she blinked as tears fell.
“Don’t cry, Bella.” He wiped her cheeks with his thumbs, like he always did. “If there was any other way… If I could be sure you and your mom would be safe, I’d take you with me.”
“We could call the policemans. They’ll make us safe.”
“That’s an idea.” He swiped another tear away. “How about I tuck you in and we’ll read?”
She nodded. “Can I sleep with this?” She gestured to the globe.
“How about we put it right next to you on the table? I don’t want it to break and cut you.”
“All right.” She leaned over and set it next to her lamp. “There.”
Daddy stood, lifting her with him, and pulled back her covers, then settled her in bed. “Here we go.” He tucked the blankets around her and read the story she and Mommy had picked out at the library.
She giggled when the silly puppy got into mischief and yawned, struggling to keep her eyes open as Daddy turned to the last page.
“The end.”
“That’s a good one.” She yawned again. “Maybe we can get a doggy like the girl in the book.”
“Someday.”
“I love doggies.”
“I know you do.”
She rubbed her tired eyes. “Let’s read it some more.”
“You need to get some rest.” Daddy stood from his chair. “Snuggle up.”
She rolled on her side and nestled her cheek on the pillow. “Night-night, Daddy. I love you.”
“I love you too.” He knelt down and hugged her tight, his breath shuddering in and out next to her ear. “I love you, Bella.” Clearing his throat, he eased back and smiled. “I love you.”
She smiled too. “I’ll see you in the morning.”
He shut his eyes, swallowing several times. “Okay.” Standing again, he turned off her light. “Bye, baby.”
“Bye, Daddy.”
EXCERPT:
Red manicured fingernails, the same shade as her hair and lips, dragged along her outer thigh to the hem of her dress, forcing Dante’s stare downward.
Cristo, she had gorgeous legs.
He bet they would look even better wrapped around his waist.
“Are you drinking?” Dante asked, his tone rough.
“Not tonight.”
Dante blinked, stunned. The thick Italian accent coating her words set him back a step. He hadn’t expected that and for some reason, it put him on edge.
“It’s a club, dolcezza. There’s isn’t much else to do on a Thursday night when you’re sitting at the bar.”
She smiled sweetly—too sweetly. “Oh, I’m doing more than sitting, bello. And I don’t need to drink to do it.”
Her voice was demure, her words rolling off her tongue quietly, but surely. The straightness of her back in the stool spoke of class while her blatant regard of him gave an air of confidence.
She dazed him.
Dante’s wasn’t accustomed to that.
A soft pat-pat-pat sound gained his attention to where her finger hit down on the bar. On the inside of her left index finger, one word was tattooed in fancy black script: Queen.
The edginess burrowed in deep again. When things felt off for Dante, they usually were. This woman made his insides scream it. Both in a good and bad way.
Dante chanced a glance back at the table where his brothers were standing, readying to leave as they pulled on their jackets. They were still talking, though. But the man who had annoyed Dante the most—Gaetano—wasn’t paying Lucian or Gio any mind. No, he was watching the woman at Dante’s side.
Not with interest, as if she may have caught his eye by chance, but instead, he looked at her with the familiarity of a friend.
Dante’s thoughts raced when what he really needed was for his mind to be silent. During the entire meeting, none of the men had spoken of their boss in direct context or out of it. The Marcello brothers had continually referred to the unknown leader of the group as a he because that’s what they assumed they were dealing with in whatever game the men were playing.
Dante was only now realizing they were wrong in doing so.
“You know, you surprised me,” the woman said, drawling her words out with a sensuality that could make a man’s mouth water. Again, she dragged her gaze from Dante’s leather shoes to his green eyes. “You’re much more handsome in person than I thought you would be, Dante Marcello.”
Three things in life made a man most vulnerable: sex, love, and children.
Sex occasionally led to love, and for some, it also led to children. As Dante was incapable of having children, he had no interest in love. Sex, however … well, that was something he simply couldn’t do without.
It was just too damn bad the need left him exposed and it had to be now he learned the lesson to never think with his cock when business was in play.
The woman swiveled fast on her chair at the same time Dante lurched toward her. He found himself between her thighs, crowding her back forcefully to the edge of the bar, nearly pushing her off the stool. The magnum he always kept hidden at his back in a holster was seated in his palm before the woman could speak and the barrel pressed under her chin at her throat.
Dante ticked the gun at her jawline, making her tilt her head back under the weight. She stared him head-on, unabashed and unafraid, smirking mischievously. Her hazel eyes danced with amusement and menace.
He hated her unfazed attitude at his warning only made him hot.
Something sharp nipped at Dante’s groin. Without needing to look down, he could feel the blade of a knife threatening to cut into his balls.
Jesus fucking Christ.
“Go on, cock your hammer back, bello,” she urged low. “You wouldn’t be the first to try and take a bite out of me, Dante. I’m not a little girl who frightens easily.”
“Who the fuck are you?” Dante demanded.
“Catrina Danzi.”
His gun dug harder into her jaw. Her knife reacted accordingly at his sac.
“What do you want from me?”
Catrina flashed white teeth in a wicked smile. “I heard you need a wife.”
Review: Let Mercy Come by Zee Monodee #RomanticSuspense
The Blurb
Let Mercy Come
...and wash away our sins...
A woman on the run
Valeriya Morozova has managed to carve out a do-over for herself away from the clutches of the Corpus agency. The one formerly known as Anastasiya still lives on the edge, paranoid anyone will bust her secret and turn her in. Agency leaders believe her to be at the heart of the failed mutinous plot to overtake command, and the price of that betrayal—never mind that she is innocent—will be her life, paid in blood.
A man who’s always followed orders
In his decades inside the Corpus agency, case officer and former super-spy Graeme Whitman—aka Scott—has always paid heed to rules and obeyed all his orders. When he is chosen to bring the traitor Anastasiya back into the fold, Scott knows it will be just one job he will successfully complete. After all, doing the right thing is atonement for your past mistakes, right?
Secrets running deep
Scott has secrets; who doesn’t? But he isn’t prepared for the full cupboard of skeletons Anastasiya carries with her...starting with the reason why she ran away from the agency. The more he digs, the less he is certain of, until he comes to ask himself why everyone has falsely painted her as a hard-hearted sociopath.
But is Anastasiya a victim, or a skilful manipulator? When her past collides with her present, the future as both she and Scott conceived it shatters. They’ve answered the call of duty all their lives—will they have to make the ultimate sacrifice in the name of love?
My review
The best way for me to describe this book is ‘balanced’. Action, interwoven with romance, countered with intrigue, set off with a bit of psychotic, and yet stabilized with some comedy and cuteness. It read like a movie, with the scenes so descriptive that I saw them in my mind’s eye.
The moment I met Valeriya in Book 2 of the Corpus Brides, I wanted to read her story. Imagine my surprise when I learned she had one. And yet I wondered how a medical doctor’s book could prove intriguing. After all she wasn’t in the field. I needn’t have worried because Ms. Monodee made it happen with twists, turns, and action that kept me on my toes.
I wanted Scott, the hot green eyed man who had a role in all three of the books, for myself, but Valeriya was a great choice for him, too. He’s one of those quintessential, get it done, kind of guys who knows how to give his heart to a woman. A beautiful love story that kept me wondering if they would end up together because the obstacles they had thrown at them seemed insurmountable at times. No spoilers from me, but I’m not sure if I’d ever get over one of the things that Valeriya did. She’s one woman no one should mess with.
I loved this book. Enough said.
I’m give this book five syringe shaped chocolate bars.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review, but you can get your copy from here. Don't worry if you haven't read Book 1 and 2, this book reads as a stand alone.
Review: Before the Morning by Zee Monodee #RomanticSuspense
The blurb
Before The Morning
...is the time of greater darkness...
A trained killer with borderline sociopathic tendencies
Rayne Cheltham traced out her life's path when she was twelve: she would marry her best friend and bear his children, and in the process, stifle the restless edge in her. When he vows never to marry, she gives in to the darkness and becomes a clandestine agent—until the day he walks into her world again, and her carefully fabricated façade crumbles.
A former cop burned by life and his personal demons
When Ash Gilfoy meets a woman who reminds him of his childhood best friend, he starts upon a path that leads him down into the abyss once again. The day Rayne waltzes back into his life, he knows she is his second chance, and the one who will save him.
Each thinks the other is their redemption . . . until they discover how deep darkness goes inside both of them.
The secrets between them make them sit on a keg of gunpowder with a lit fuse in their hands. Rayne’s whole life is built on a lie, and the truth is threatening to explode in their faces. But that is not the only menace they have to face. Someone is out to get Rayne, and she must disclose her secret past before it is too late.
Can Rayne and Ash survive all that’s thrown in their path? Can they hang on to the last thread of their relationship, and can they emerge, still together and still alive, in the morning after the deepest darkness?
My Review
After reading the blurb I wondered just how Ms. Monodee could get me to empathize with a trained assassin enough for me to not only like her, but want her to end up with the hero. I had no need to worry. Rayne had so many layers to her personality that it would’ve been more of a task for me not to root for her happiness.
Ms. Monodee has combined action with a gentleness that can only come with a true romance. She got me so into their world that when I finished the book I wanted to take shooting lessons, try on a hot pair of stillettoes and test drive a kick or two with them, but mostly I desired to live an undercover life. Of course I wouldn’t hide it from my man, because that didn’t work out too well for Rayne.
I give this book four out of five 9mm gun shaped chocolate bars.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review. But if you want you can get your copy here.
