Review: Curiously Dark Tales by Debbie Christiana #Anthology #Thriller

Prelude to a review
On occasion I like to take a break from my beloved romance novels. I once considered reading a Stephen King book, but thought better of it at the last moment. I’m not a fan of horrors only because I’m a chicken (as I’ve admitted to many times before). With that said, on to my review.

The Blurb
Supernatural beings and the evils of humanity come alive in these six, grim tales with a twist.

My Review
This anthology took me into the darker areas of humanity and the paranormal world than I normally like to go.  The stories were compact and yet all ended in a satisfactory (not happy – at least from the perspective of the teller) manner.

The stories are disturbing, but I couldn’t stop reading them because they’re so engaging. And they all have that moment when I said, “Oh, my goodness.”

Dark tales that may or may not give nightmares, but will leave you wondering about the disturbing actions of individuals (chills down my spine).

I give this book five out of five (athame, rope, flame thrower, olives, taxi, Strega wine bottle, big block of cement – I can’t choose) shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased my copy from Amazon.

A Big Fat Slobbered All Over Thank You

Everyone (except those who aren’t in the business) knows that publishing is not a go-it-alone venture. If a writer can become successful without the help of others, then please let me know how. I’d like to take this small opportunity to thank those who have been most helpful in my writing career. Let’s think of this post as my sort of Emmy speech, only I’m not an actress, well I am, but that’s neither here nor there.

  1. Black Opal Books for giving me a chance to publish my books Love Through Time and Love Undercover
  2. Decadent Publishing for taking the chance to publish Midwife to Destiny and soon to be released Destiny Mine
  3. Debbie Christiana – I raise my chocolate up to this wonderful, supportive woman who provides me with pictures of half dressed men to cheer me up, celebrate my birthday, and just for the hell of it.
  4. Empi Baryeh a fabulous writer who has become my mentor, friend and go too woman.
  5. Cathrina Constantine – My awesome friend, beta reader, and review partner. We’ve had so much fun with our dual book reviews.
  6. Kiru Taye- all I can say is that I want to be like her one day.
  7. Zee Monodee- the writer/editor who taught me how to show versus tell. Before her I was like, what the heck does that mean?  She’s made me a better writer.
  8. All of the bloggers who've had me on their blog to gush about my novels. Blowing you huge kisses
  9. My friends who have read my books and given me wonderful feedback. I keep you around for a reason.
  10. To everyone who has ever shared, tweeted, or google plus-ed anything for me.  You have my ultimate thanks.
  11. Last but not least, my blog readers.Where would I be without you? It's not a question worth pondering.

Of course the list could go on into the millions but I’ll end here.

Any shout out of gratitude you’d like to make?

Multitasking: Celebrate and Meet the Character

Okay, to say that I'm super busy and exhausted is an understatement, but never to tired to celebrate.

It's all about life. Living it. Making fun of it. And sometimes giving it the finger.

Meet the Character - Sarita Cerez
I was tagged by the wonderful Inge Saunders to participate in this blog hop. A little about Inge and her book:

First time author Inge Saunders fell in love with books when she started reading romance novels with her grandmother. Intrigued by the worlds books unlocked, it was inevitable she would take pen to paper.

She`s forms part of Romance writers` Organization of South Africa (ROSA) and currently has two books under contract with Decadent Publishing, Falling for Mr. Unexpected (set to be released at the end of September 2014) and Dance of Love ( due later in 2014).

The Blurb
Can Emma fall for Mr. Unexpected when she doesn’t believe in Mr. Right or even Mr. Right Now…?
Primary school teacher Emma Cupido compares the notion of “The One,” with believing in the Tooth Fairy. When the school holidays starts, she heads for her brother-in-law`s beach house in Strand, South Africa and stumbles on more than she bargained for.
Hollywood heartthrob, Damian Davidson flees LA thinking his beach house in SA would be a safe hideout from his sex scandal. He’s had his fill of manipulative women and when he mistakes Emma for a crazy fan, all hell breaks loose.

Emma and Damian get off to a rocky start but first impressions can be deceiving. Is there more to Damian than the superficial taint of Hollywood? And what happens when she agrees to a trip to LA? Will Emma become a believer in “The One” or just another Hollywood scandal?

My turn now
What is the name of your character? Is s/he fictional/historical?
Sarita Cerez (make sure to roll the r's). She's fictional, but I'd love to be able to meet her without having to be put on medications to 'stabilize' me.

When and where is the story set?
It's a contemporary romance set a medium security prison in Washington, D.C. where illegal immigrants are detained until they are deported.

What should we know about your character?
She is not an illegal immigrant, but has to act like one during an undercover assignment.

What is your character's goal?
To protect the daughter of the president of South Korea who is being deported as a punishment by her father after being a naughty girl.

Keeping her hands off of Matthew Carter, the guard she's fallen in love with.

What is screwing up your character's life (main conflict in writerly speak)?
She's undercover for the Secret Service and has to lie to Carter in order to protect her charge. It doesn't help that he thinks shes' being deported to Columbia.

What is the title?
Love Undercover
When can we expect the book to be published or when was it published?
It was released September 13th, 2014. You can get your copy here:

For next week I've tagged:
The ever evolving Kiru Taye:
A lover of books, as a teenager Kiru Taye used to read novels under the blanket during lights-outs in boarding school. These days, with a young family to take care of, she's still sacrificing sleep for the pleasures of a good book.

During the day though, she transforms her wildly vivid imagination into sensual, atmospheric romance stories with passionate characters.
You reach her via her blog, Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or Pinterest

BLURB

Sassy, successful Faith Brown has earned her place in the boardroom through hard work and sheer ambition. Making family is not on her agenda when there are businesses to develop and competitors to outdo. So when a casual affair with smooth and irresistible tycoon Mark Essien leads to an unplanned pregnancy, she’s determined not to make the mistakes her mother made by living with a man just for the sake of her child.

For Mark, personal matters have no place in the boardroom. Spotting the perfect opportunity, he ruthlessly launches a takeover bid for Faith’s Investment Brokerage firm. Finding out he’ll soon be a father, he knows he can’t let the indomitable and sexy Faith go through with her plans of single parenthood. All gloves are off. He’ll seduce her by any tactic necessary if it means his child doesn’t suffer the same stigma he did as a child.

Debbie Christiana explains: Why a novella? #paranormal #romance #NewRelease

I am so happy to have Debbie Christiana come visit me. I've waited a long time for a sequel to Twin Flames which I loved, see my review here. She impressed me further with her novella Forever Flames, see my review here. Just like Cookie Monster, I want more!

Thank you so much, Nana, for letting me stop by to celebrate my two new releases.

TWIN FLAMES is technically a re-release.  My publisher, Black Opal Books, was nice enough to let me revise it and give it a spanking new cover. I like to think of it as my story having a little work done, some tightening up here and there, removing some wrinkles – a complete makeover.

The Twin Flame series is a paranormal romance about reincarnation, past lives, soul mates and a mischievous ghost. The reliving of the Marc and Natalia’s past lives is a crucial part of the story. As they are regressed back in time, they must ‘open a door’ to their past lives and my new cover reflects that.

FOREVER FLAMES is a novella that closes a gap and answers a question that’s left open at the end of TWIN FLAMES, so that the next installment, (working title ETERNAL FLAMES) could begin, as it’s own story.  My intention was to answer that question in the sequel, but as I started writing it, I found it wasn’t working. By the time I went back to deal with that issue, I had written four or five chapters and hadn’t gotten to the meat of the next story yet. A friend, who is both author and editor, suggested a novella to solve the problem, and FOREVER FLAMES was born.

It was a perfect idea as it allowed me a new perspective on the story. It gave me the freedom to write and expand on the character’s unusual love story without worrying about info dump or boring backstory.

Here’s the blurb for each story and I’ve included a brief excerpt from FOREVER FLAMES.

The Blurb

 The Blurb

Sometimes the past won’t stay where it belongs.
Marc and Natalia are settling into parenthood, but can’t shake the feeling of déjà vu when it comes to their new baby.
Sensing they’ve been a family before and something horrible happened, they journey back in time, through hypnotic regression, to eighteenth century Belgium. Here they relive a shocking lifetime that challenges their love more than any other, and brings repercussions back into their present life.
Last time, remembering their past lives brought Marc and Natalia together, this time it may tear them apart.
Excerpt from FOREVER FLAMES:

Natalia and Marc sat as Ophiuchus made his way behind his desk.
“Welcome to Soul Severance and Separation Services. I say welcome with a heavy heart because I am always saddened when one soul wants to sever itself from another. But I also understand eternity is a long time and some- times these things just don’t work out. It becomes impossible to learn your life lessons with each incarnation if you’re being dragged down by a soul mate who you can no longer get along with.”
He moved his chair back, smoothed out the back of his robe and sat down. “However, I’m especially dismayed to- day because of your status. Twin Flame soul mates usually pass the test of time, but alas, every once in awhile, these too fall apart.”
Natalia bolted up from her chair. “Excuse me. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t want to sever my soul from Marc’s. This is a huge mistake.”
Ophiuchus folded his hands in front of him. “Maybe you don’t, my dear, but Marcos does. Do you always believe everything is about you?”
“Yes, sir, she does,” Marc answered before she could speak for herself.
“I do not!” Natalia twisted her whole body to face Marc. “What’s going on?”
“I’m sorry, but it’s time,” he said. “You’re too difficult and I’m exhausted. I don’t think I can go another round with you.”

My Review
Twin Flames  is on my list of all time favorite books. I’ve missed strong willed Natalia and studly Marco. You know a book is wonderful when you think of the characters after over a year has passed. Ms. Christiana has made me a happy woman by bringing them back to life through this novella.

Marc and Nat take us with them on a heart wrenching adventure. Ms. Christiana’s ability to interweave their present life with an amazing past life regression once again impressed me. The novella is a quick read that had me laughing, gasping and saddened, and when you grasp what the key on the cover means, you'll be horrified. Yet it always had me turning to the page to see what would happen next.

If you haven’t read Twin Flames that’s okay, you’ll be able to keep up with Forever Flames. It’s so good that it will make you want to grab a copy of the first book.

I give this book five out of five key shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased this book from Amazon.

Infamous Female Serial Killers by Debbie Christiana #horror #NewRelease #Anthology

I have a wonderful treat for you today. The marvelous Debbie Christiana has been up to some creepy story writing and is here to scare the crap out of us.

Thank you, Nana, for having me today.

I was fortunate to have my short dark fiction story, Professional Courtesy, included the newly released DarkLight 4 anthology by Crushing Hearts and Black Butterflies Publishing.

Professional Courtesy tells a tale of two contemporary serial killers, but history shows us that serial murdering has gone on through the ages, including female serial killers, who are rare, but not unheard of.

The first recorded serial killers (both male and female) date back to the late thirteenth century, but human nature being what it is, I’m sure they’ve been around since the beginning of time.

Baron Gilles de Rais, a leader in the French army and companion in arms of Joan of Arc, was hanged in 1440 for killing and raping 200 boys in the course of his lifetime.

Countess Erzebet Bathory of Hungary (The Blood Countess) is labeled the most proficient female serial killer in history. She tortured, killed and butchered 600 young girls until her capture in 1610. Her family’s status prevented her from going to trail but she was imprisoned and died in 1614.

There are differences and similarities between male and female serial killers. 80% of female killers use poison or some non-aggressive form of killing, where as men tend to be more violent.  75% of female killers do so for profit and kill people they know, usually family members and acquaintances, where as men kill randomly and are sexually driven.  However, beware, both fit into society without attracting attention to themselves, and both are psychopaths and have no conscience or remorse.

Delphine LaLaurie was a French aristocrat living in New Orleans and was played by Kathy Bates is this season of American Horror. She was unusually and disturbingly cruel to her slaves, chaining them in the attic and sewing their mouths closed.  She was discovered when her mansion caught on fire and they found a woman slave chained to the stove. She started the fire in attempt to kill herself to escape Madame LaLaurie’s punishment. Delphine escaped justice, fled to Paris and died there. However, Kathy Bate’s character of Madame LaLaurie, got exactly what she deserved.

Enriqueta “The Vampire of Barcelona” Marti sold homemade cures for TB and Syphilis, for those in need in the early 1900’s. What her customers didn’t know was she lured young children to her home, prostituted them, killed them and used their fat, bones and muscle in her elixir. She was captured in 1912 but her cellmates killed her before she could stand trial.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg of the long list of killers through history. In doing my research I found that women killers, while outnumbered by males killers, can be more ruthless and merciless than their male counterparts.

Looks can be deceiving….

I don’t always write dark stories, I also write paranormal romance, with a happy ending.  You can find me at:

My Writing Process Blog Hop

I’ve been invited to participate in a blog hop that introduces you to authors you may not know and gives a little insight into each author's writing process.

Author of two fantastic paranormal romance novels, Debbie Christiana nominated me for this blog hop. Her first novel Twin Flames will forever be on my list of favorite books, her rendition of past lives was amazing. Solstice introduced me to the world of Strega and had me sitting on the edge of my seat with the action sequences.
Here's how it works. I answer four questions about my writing then pay it forward by tagging three authors and link to their website and/or blog.
The three authors I chose are all fabulous, in very different ways.

EmpiBaryeh writes spicy romances set in Ghana. Her books will leave you knowing you have read a great romance. She writes characters I fall in love with.

KiruTaye is a super author. Every five minutes she has a book coming out, and they are wonderful reads. She writes historical and contemporary romances which keep you buying more of her books because they’re so good.

GeorgiaLyn Hunter has written a paranormal romance which blew me away. I keep harassing her for the second book in the series. I thought she was a martial artist because the fight scenes she wrote were right on point.  Brilliant.

And now for my questions

1. What am I working on?
To be honest, I’m busy promoting my latest romance, Midwife to Destiny, which has recently been released. It’s a lot of work so I haven’t had much time to write, but book two in the Destiny series is in the works so I’ll be doing some editing on that soon.

2. How does my work differ from others of its genre?
Because of each author’s unique background, experiences, and research, even if the story line is the same the novels will be different. The same is true for me. There is no other me in the world, and because of this my novels are different from everyone else. I like to characterize my work as simple, to the point and engaging.

3. Why do I write what I do?
I’m hooked on the happily ever after aspect of romance novels. The ending is predictable, and yet each romance  is completely different. Life can be so unstable that sometimes a person wants to escape into a book where the ending is known, but the journey is a roller-coaster ride. I like to provide this for the people who read my books.

4. How does my writing process work?
Out of nowhere I get an idea (this makes me think that muses are real). I sit down and write. I don’t do outlines because I never stick to them. The characters like to drag me kicking and screaming sometimes to where they want to go. Where I want them to go doesn’t matter. I let them have the lead, and so far so good.

Thank you for stopping by and remember to check out Debbie’s post from last week by clicking here and  Kiru, Empi, and Georgia’s posts next Monday, March 17th.

The Blurb

Debbie Christiana's #giveaway month

From Google.com
Debbie Christiana is celebrating two things this month: Halloween and her birthday. I'm not quite sure which one she's more excited about, but both are awesome.
From Google.com
In honor of Debbie's favorite month, I'm giving away a copy of one of her books (winner's choice) along with a $5 Amazon gift card. One lucky winner gets both prizes.

All you have to do is:

Answer this one question in the comments section (you don't even have to answer correctly, guesses are accepted, and creativity is even more welcome, written with a cackle).

Who is Debbie Christiana's favorite witch of all time?

The last day to comment will be Wednesday October 23rd.
Debbie will announce the answer along with my randomly chosen winner on her blog,  Friday October 25th.

In the meantime don't wait for me to gift you with a copy of one of her fantastic books. Run out (or click on your computer) and buy it.

BLURB

Time is running out for Armend Zogu. The 250-year old family curse on his head will claim him on his 30th birthday, the winter solstice.

Sofia Palmalosi is just the Strega who can save him. A descendant of a long line of powerful Italian witches, their magic was a gift bestowed on them by the Goddess Diana.

In order to break the curse, Sofia and Armend must piece together the sheet music from an old violin sonata that Armend’s ancestor wrote for his forbidden love.

Together Sofia and Armend embark on a journey from New York to Sicily and the ancient ruins of Diana’s temple and back to New York while fighting a battle of wits and magic with a psychopath who wants them both dead and the curse intact.

If the curse doesn’t kill Armend, breaking it just might.

The Blurb

She’d never met him before…or had she?

The last thing forty-year old Natalia Santagario expected was to be sitting on a Manhattan barstool ogling a man she’s never met, but swears she knows.

He didn’t know her at all…or did he?

The mysterious dark-haired woman at the end of the bar stops twenty-eight year old Marc Tremonti in his tracks. His head assures him she’s a stranger, but his heart tells him otherwise.

Together they embark on an adventure that will change their lives forever.

Their attraction instant and enigmatic, they undergo past life regression and discover that, not only have they spent hundreds of lives together as lovers, Natalia holds the secret to Marc’s puzzling birthmark. But what should have been a joyful reunion is complicated by a kind, albeit confused, almost ex-wife, an unfortunate accident in a taxicab, and a bout of temporary amnesia that threatens to ruin everything. On top of all that, they must contend with a mischievous ghost from their past. What else could possibly go wrong?

Guest Blogger Debbie Christiana Talks About Paranormal Writers beliefs in the Paranormal

I talk about her all the time, so it’s only right that I should entrust my blog to my good friend and amazing author, Debbie Christiana. I'm sure you'll enjoy her post as much as I did. (Check out my review of Solstice when your done).

A few weeks ago, Nana asked me a great question. Do paranormal authors believe in the supernatural characters and the world they invent and write about?

I think you need a love or passion for the unexplained. You don’t have to believe in every paranormal aspect of the story.  Its fiction and creative liberties are fun and a big part of writing.
But I think it helps drive the story if you believe some of the things could happen.

My debut novel, Twin Flames, tells a tale of reincarnation, past lives and soul mates. There is also a determined but playful ghost that lives with the heroine. Do I believe in ghosts? Yes, but sadly I’ve never seen one so I can’t say for sure that they exist. Do I believe we live more than one life and are spiritually connected to other souls? Yes. Am I positive we come back time after time to learn our life’s lessons? No. But I consider it a likelihood so writing Marc and Natalia’s love story through countless past lives over several millennia was real to me.

My new novel, Solstice, is a story of Italian witches, magic and a curse all set within a love story. Let me answer before you ask. Yes, I believe in witches and know quite a few.

The biggest mystery involving witches is the magical aspect known as witchcraft.  It’s complex and simple at the same time. Witches believe their magic comes from tapping into the powerful energy of the universe, Mother Earth and themselves. They also consider all things in nature to be connected to Mother Earth and the universe.

Could science agree with the ancient understanding of how the cosmos work? Here’s a quote from one of my favorite people in the world, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist and Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. I saw him there once and was smitten. He’s handsome, brilliant and funny.

“Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, and to the rest of the universe atomically.   That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. It’s not that we are better than the universe; we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and universe is in us.”

Granted, Mr. Tyson’s explanation has a scientific edge to it whiles pagans and witches see it in a more spiritual way, the message speaks the same.

What’s my opinion on magic? I’ll leave you with another quote – I love quotes. Thank you everyone for spending a little of your time with me today.

The universe is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper.
Eden Phillipotts, 1862-1960 British author and poet
