He runs a tight ship, and doesn't need captivating and efficient yet aloof Comfort around to keep his heart-rate in semi-permanent overdrive.

EXCERPT FROM UNRAVELLING HIS MARK BY ZEE MONODEE
“It’s not good, patronne. The model who was to have the showstopper bride on his arm ate some of the prawn cocktail. He is currently puking his guts out in the guest loo at the back.”
“Thank God he made it to the loo and didn’t barf on any of the clothes.”
Trust her problem-solving mind to come up with the silver lining in every situation. But seriously, if any of the gowns had been ruined, Nina would’ve had her hide. All the pieces had thousands of pearls or Swarovski crystals hand-sewn on them.
Think, Annabelle, think.
“So the only problem we have right now is that we need an escort for the showstopper.”
“And her,” Daniel whispered with a glance towards a still-raving Nina.
“Her, we can deal with, and it will sort itself out once we find a replacement for the sick model.”
Daniel snorted. “Good luck with that. Have you forgotten the brief she forced down the throat of every modelling agency on the island? The man had to be buff and—”
“Taller than six-foot-two. I know.”
Good luck finding a six-foot man at random on the island in the first place, and now on such short notice? They had their work cut out for her.
Still, there were some foreigners in the audience. There must be one about six-two and muscular. What had Nina written on the call sheet? She’d wanted ‘a tall drink of water.’
There was no time to ponder the situation. The sooner they calmed Nina down, the sooner they’d get this show underway, and the sooner this night would be over, too.
So, armed with optimism and determination, Annabelle strutted back into the main room, a smile plastered on her face as she eyed every single man around. Just her luck. None seemed taller than six feet, and they all looked like guys whose only attempt at exercise came from a leisurely stroll once a month along a putting green.
Her spirits were sinking fast, but no, she wouldn’t be the victim. She would turn this around one way or another. If she couldn’t find— Her shoulder collided into someone, and reflex made her look up and say, “Oh, pardon.
But the apology died on her lips as her gaze raked over the hulking piece of masculinity she’d bumped into. He was tall, all right. Comfortably above six-two, she’d say, with the frame to match. Those broad, broad shoulders looked snug inside the clean lines of an obviously expensive hand-tailored suit the shade of a rare Dom Pérignon millésime. His skin was the colour of sugar when it had just started to turn into caramel, a golden glow on his chiselled features and cheekbones so sharp and defined, it was ridiculous. His head was shaved, and his eyes were dark. Smouldering. Intense. A thin goatee that looked like it had been hand-drawn onto him framed his solid chin and gave bearing to his strong jaw.
A puff of air escaped her.
“Tall drink of water,” she mumbled, and blinked.
The gears of her stunned mind started clicking then, and she gasped. “Tall drink of water!”

Review: The Spelled Stone (The Cursed Seas Collection) by Natalie G. Owens and Zee Monodee

The Blurb
To secure a future for her ocean world, one of her clan must be sacrificed.

Olinda “Ollie” Quorin is the heir to a dying Siren dynasty. However, when word comes that a Legacy Stone can save their deteriorating ocean, the clan elders choose her—the klutzy, expendable one—to make the quest, despite her royal heritage. After begrudgingly traveling to the surface, Ollie botches a spell and binds herself to a reluctant human male.

Kavan Daniels has learned to survive on the treacherous lands and coasts. He's prepared for everything ... except the Siren he can’t escape. Ollie needs a Mage to find the location of the Legacy Stone. Kavan needs the same Mage to break free from Ollie.

As they struggle against time to find the stone, they face conflict, danger, the monsters of their nightmares, and the complications of their unlikely pairing. Death is on their heels at every turn, and saving Ollie’s clan, as well as the surface world, may mean losing her own life.

Fans of The 100, Divergent, Tidelands, and twisted versions of Beauty and the Beast will love The Spelled Stone, a standalone novel in The Cursed Seas Collection.

My Review
I’ve been wanting an interracial paranormal romance for a while. When I saw that this book was available I jumped on. From the first page to the last I was hooked.

First of all Olinda is so much stronger than she seems in the beginning. What she goes through while she lived in the sea as a Siren broke my heart. She was such a good and kind woman that I didn’t understand why she’d been treated in such a manner. When she reaches the surface, things change for the better and she becomes who she was meant to.

Kavan is tough and crass and he makes no apologies for it. Living on his own on the surface hasn’t been easy for him. Yet we get to see the most tender side of him when he encounters Ollie. It actually made me sigh to see his little gestures of caring towards her.

They are from two separate worlds, but they fit together perfectly.

There is one section of the story when I questioned why Ollie would even attempt to accomplish the impossible mission she was sent on. Her people had not been kind to the people of the land throughout history. When I read this part it reminded me of a highly controversial issue that happened in real life (you’ll have to read the book because I don’t give spoilers). Something unjust to the extreme that the Sirens did that made me angry and had me half hoping that Ollie would leave the stone right where it was instead of saving the ocean dwellers. But she has a more forgiving nature than me and did the right thing.

Something I loved about this book was that it left me on edge. I had no idea how it would end and that kept me reading long past my bedtime. A fantastic read.

I give this book five out of five harpoon shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Prescription For Love (Destiny's Child) by Zee Monodee

The Blurb
Forensic pathologist Margo Nolan is wholly unprepared when she is named guardian to a girl she once loved as her own. Struggling to balance her professional life against sudden parenthood, she has no clue how to reach out to her ‘daughter,’ Emma. Complicating matters is the sexy—and much younger!—doctor-next-door, Jamie Gillespie.

Jamie Gillespie volunteered to step in for his uncle, the village doctor—in part as a favour to the older man, and in part to stick it to his father’s lofty ambitions for him. The last thing he expected in this sleepy part of Surrey was to meet the tough and seemingly cold Margo. Everything about her aloof manner should push him away, but he cannot ignore his attraction for the woman or his need to help her out.

The question is—can Jamie overcome Margo’s reticence towards love and build a proper life with her & Emma? Or will she let old fears and prejudices keep the hunky village doctor at arm’s length?

Warning: Contains thoroughly British sensibility and humour, as well as a charm-your-socks-off doctor, tween angst, & a damsel not-exactly-in-distress but who’d welcome the help, anyway …

My Review
This book was amazing. Filled with emotion, mystery, just enough drama, and of course romance. I love how Jamie first saw Margo for what she presented herself as, but looked deeper and saw the truth in who she actually was. Margo possessed a tenderness that both her past and profession forced her to hide from the world, until she no longer needed to because of her daughter and Jamie’s loving ways. It takes Margo a long time (and a full powered blowtorch) to break the ice she’d encased herself in.

Jamie was younger than Margo, but his maturity didn’t allow the reader to witness it. I loved the way he became a mentor to Margo’s daughter. It came naturally to him and that melted my heart. Jamie also had demons he had to deal with which made him a complicated character, but I’ll admit not as complicated as Margo – the woman had gone through many trials and tribulations in her life, ending up stronger, if no colder, for it – until her daughter and Jamie came along.

I give this book five out of five soccer ball shaped chocolate bars.

Books Would Suck without Good Editors #EditorsRock

Yes this is my official opinion on the subject. It's one of the problems some indie writers have. They think they can get by without external editing. Most of us know that they are wrong.

I always sing the praises of Zee Monodee, my editor for Midwife to Destiny. She taught me how to show vs. tell, and how to dig into the emotions of the character. She made my book, well… good. Not that it sucked before she got her hands on it and had my stomach twisting into knots of anxiety, but it kind of did.

I thank all the editors I’ve worked with for their tireless work and willingness to take the chance at evoking my wrath to tell me I was wrong about something and make me see how it could be better. My glass of champagne (the expensive kind, nothing cheap for my editors) is raised to Zee, Faith, Lauri, Lisa, Meghan, Judi, and, Lucy for helping me create books I’m proud to have people read.

Long live good editors and may they resist pulling their hair out when dealing with authors. Cheers.

Review: Let Mercy Come by Zee Monodee #RomanticSuspense

The Blurb
Let Mercy Come
...and wash away our sins...

A woman on the run
Valeriya Morozova has managed to carve out a do-over for herself away from the clutches of the Corpus agency. The one formerly known as Anastasiya still lives on the edge, paranoid anyone will bust her secret and turn her in. Agency leaders believe her to be at the heart of the failed mutinous plot to overtake command, and the price of that betrayal—never mind that she is innocent—will be her life, paid in blood.

A man who’s always followed orders
In his decades inside the Corpus agency, case officer and former super-spy Graeme Whitman—aka Scott—has always paid heed to rules and obeyed all his orders. When he is chosen to bring the traitor Anastasiya back into the fold, Scott knows it will be just one job he will successfully complete. After all, doing the right thing is atonement for your past mistakes, right?

Secrets running deep
Scott has secrets; who doesn’t? But he isn’t prepared for the full cupboard of skeletons Anastasiya carries with her...starting with the reason why she ran away from the agency. The more he digs, the less he is certain of, until he comes to ask himself why everyone has falsely painted her as a hard-hearted sociopath.

But is Anastasiya a victim, or a skilful manipulator? When her past collides with her present, the future as both she and Scott conceived it shatters. They’ve answered the call of duty all their lives—will they have to make the ultimate sacrifice in the name of love?

My review
The best way for me to describe this book is ‘balanced’. Action, interwoven with romance, countered with intrigue, set off with a bit of psychotic, and yet stabilized with some comedy and cuteness. It read like a movie, with the scenes so descriptive that I saw them in my mind’s eye.

The moment I met Valeriya in Book 2 of the Corpus Brides, I wanted to read her story. Imagine my surprise when I learned she had one. And yet I wondered how a medical doctor’s book could prove intriguing. After all she wasn’t in the field. I needn’t have worried because Ms. Monodee made it happen with twists, turns, and action that kept me on my toes.

I wanted Scott, the hot green eyed man who had a role in all three of the books, for myself, but Valeriya was a great choice for him, too. He’s one of those quintessential, get it done, kind of guys who knows how to give his heart to a woman. A beautiful love story that kept me wondering if they would end up together because the obstacles they had thrown at them seemed insurmountable at times. No spoilers from me, but I’m not sure if I’d ever get over one of the things that Valeriya did. She’s one woman no one should mess with.

I loved this book. Enough said.

I’m give this book five syringe shaped chocolate bars.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review, but you can get your copy from here. Don't worry if you haven't read Book 1 and 2, this book reads as a stand alone.

Review: Before the Morning by Zee Monodee #RomanticSuspense

The blurb

Before The Morning
...is the time of greater darkness...

A trained killer with borderline sociopathic tendencies
Rayne Cheltham traced out her life's path when she was twelve: she would marry her best friend and bear his children, and in the process, stifle the restless edge in her. When he vows never to marry, she gives in to the darkness and becomes a clandestine agent—until the day he walks into her world again, and her carefully fabricated façade crumbles.

A former cop burned by life and his personal demons
When Ash Gilfoy meets a woman who reminds him of his childhood best friend, he starts upon a path that leads him down into the abyss once again. The day Rayne waltzes back into his life, he knows she is his second chance, and the one who will save him.

Each thinks the other is their redemption . . . until they discover how deep darkness goes inside both of them.
The secrets between them make them sit on a keg of gunpowder with a lit fuse in their hands. Rayne’s whole life is built on a lie, and the truth is threatening to explode in their faces. But that is not the only menace they have to face. Someone is out to get Rayne, and she must disclose her secret past before it is too late.

Can Rayne and Ash survive all that’s thrown in their path? Can they hang on to the last thread of their relationship, and can they emerge, still together and still alive, in the morning after the deepest darkness?

My Review
After reading the blurb I wondered just how Ms. Monodee could get me to empathize with a trained assassin enough for me to not only like her, but want her to end up with the hero. I had no need to worry. Rayne had so many layers to her personality that it would’ve been more of a task for me not to root for her happiness.

Ms. Monodee has combined action with a gentleness that can only come with a true romance. She got me so into their world that when I finished the book I wanted to take shooting lessons, try on a hot pair of stillettoes and test drive a kick or two with them, but mostly I desired to live an undercover life. Of course I wouldn’t hide it from my man, because that didn’t work out too well for Rayne.

I give this book four out of five 9mm gun shaped chocolate bars.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. But if you want you can get your copy here.

EXCERPT
“Why did you run, Ana?”
She hitched in a breath. That’s the nickname he’d used— Don’t. Think. Of. That.
“Antonia. Nothing mattered except her. She wouldn’t grow up inside the agency, and I wouldn’t let anyone take her from me.”
“There was nothing else?”
“That wasn’t enough?” she shot back at him.
He sighed again. “Things have been happening inside the organization.”
“What kind of things?”
He stared at her. “Mutiny.”
“What?” Surprise dropped like an anvil over her and she stumbled to the bed, where she fell into a heap next to him. “You must be joking!”
“Sadly, no. You didn’t notice anything back in there? It never struck you that something could be amiss?”
She turned to face him. “Something was amiss, Scott—I was pregnant, about to bring an innocent, defenceless child into this fucked up existence of being a Corpus agent. Excuse me for not thinking of anything beside that.”
“Speaking of, who’s her father?”
She steeled herself to answer this question...with a non-answer. “Why did you have to fake your death?”
Had he noticed she’d evaded the query?
He remained silent for long seconds, before he responded. “You recall the Stepanovic case in Marseille, a little over a year ago? Nothing was going as planned there, and it even ended in a case death.”
She nodded. “No conclusive evidence, no influence worked, and he even disappeared after a while. Total failure for us on that one, I remember. The boss hadn’t been pleased.”
“You’ll also recall it’s not the only case that fell off the wayside around that period.”
She frowned. “Now that you mention it...”
“Someone from the inside was letting those criminals walk away. Fey had also disappeared; we suspected she’d gone rogue.”
She winced upon hearing that name. How she’d hated that woman, because Fey had worked with Scott and had managed to snare him into her bed a long time ago. She’d had everything Valeriya had ever wanted for herself.
“Then someone targeted Kali.”
“Oh, my God! Is she okay? She isn’t...?”
“She’s fine. Her agent status burned, but she’s alive, living like a civilian now in Notting Hill with her husband.”
A sigh of relief rushed out of her. Kali—aka Rayne Cheltham—had been her best friend inside the Corpus. Right before cutting and running from Prague, she’d done all she could to save the life of Ash, Rayne’s husband, who’d been hit by a rogue bullet when he’d walked in on one of her operations.
Rayne, the only person she’d informed of her leaving, without giving her any details as to why. Her friend must now think the worst of her.
And so must Scott, and everyone else. Clarity suddenly beamed in her mind.
“You think I had anything to do with this?” Only someone on the upper echelons of the organization could’ve pulled this mutiny through, what with having access to case files and their whole arsenal.
And she had disappeared right after Rayne got burned.
That’s why Scott had been looking for her.

A Big Fat Slobbered All Over Thank You

Everyone (except those who aren’t in the business) knows that publishing is not a go-it-alone venture. If a writer can become successful without the help of others, then please let me know how. I’d like to take this small opportunity to thank those who have been most helpful in my writing career. Let’s think of this post as my sort of Emmy speech, only I’m not an actress, well I am, but that’s neither here nor there.

  1. Black Opal Books for giving me a chance to publish my books Love Through Time and Love Undercover
  2. Decadent Publishing for taking the chance to publish Midwife to Destiny and soon to be released Destiny Mine
  3. Debbie Christiana – I raise my chocolate up to this wonderful, supportive woman who provides me with pictures of half dressed men to cheer me up, celebrate my birthday, and just for the hell of it.
  4. Empi Baryeh a fabulous writer who has become my mentor, friend and go too woman.
  5. Cathrina Constantine – My awesome friend, beta reader, and review partner. We’ve had so much fun with our dual book reviews.
  6. Kiru Taye- all I can say is that I want to be like her one day.
  7. Zee Monodee- the writer/editor who taught me how to show versus tell. Before her I was like, what the heck does that mean?  She’s made me a better writer.
  8. All of the bloggers who've had me on their blog to gush about my novels. Blowing you huge kisses
  9. My friends who have read my books and given me wonderful feedback. I keep you around for a reason.
  10. To everyone who has ever shared, tweeted, or google plus-ed anything for me.  You have my ultimate thanks.
  11. Last but not least, my blog readers.Where would I be without you? It's not a question worth pondering.

Of course the list could go on into the millions but I’ll end here.

Any shout out of gratitude you’d like to make?

Review & Spotlight: Walking the Edge by Zee Monodee #Romance

Title: Walking The Edge
Author: +Zee Monodee
Series: Corpus Brides, Book 1
Genre: Romantic Suspense

Blurb:

Walking the edge
The next step might be the last...

A woman without a past
Left amnesiac after an accident, Amelia Jamison’s instincts slowly rise from the depths of oblivion to question her life as the wife of a cold, manipulating and distant man. Wisps of a dream show her another man she may have known intimately, but is he a memory, or a figment of her imagination?

A man with too much information
After many aliases, today Gerard Besson is simply a police commissaire in Marseille. When a mysterious woman starts to follow him, he is suspicious. But things aren’t what they seem, and as he reluctantly gets closer to her, dredges of his painful, buried past spring to light and make him question her identity.

Each seems to have led two different lives
But neither is prepared for what awaits them when they cross the fine line between knowing your true self and that of your alter ego.

Danger is the name of the game, and as it catches up with them in the French Provence, both know they better be ready for the inevitable fall.

My Review
Pulse racing action, heart wrenching emotion, and hot sex. That’s a great combination for any story. Ms. Monodee keeps the twist and turns coming, not allowing the reader to figure it out what will happen next until it’s just about to occur.

No story is complete without a character doing something stupid. You know, the kind of event that makes a reader re-read the section to make sure it actually happened? The heroine had one of those moments.  I wish I could tell you what happened, but let’s just say that she learned the error of her ways once it was all said and done. I was able to forgive her because her motive made sense and she was such an overall strong character (with an edge) that I couldn't hold it against her.
The attraction between the hero and heroine (to be honest I’m not sure what names to call them anymore) was intense. I liked that the love scenes balanced the action.

I’m looking forward to reading the stories of the other kick ass women in the two remaining books of the series.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review, and I was one happy girl about it.

I give this book five out of five gun shaped chocolate bars.

As she closed her hands on the vials in the medicine cabinet, she froze. The plastic tubes rolled with a clatter of shaking pills into the sunken marble sink.

Someone stood there.

Oh, no. Peter.

Her breath hitched in her throat as she sensed more than heard his approach, his Italian loafers making no sound on the bedroom carpet, then on the polished floor tiles of the en-suite. Like a stealthy big cat, a predator on the move... The closer he got, the more she recoiled and cringed, dreading the feel of his cold, slimy paws should they touch her.

He dipped his head so his mouth would be level with her ear, and the whisper of his breath teased her skin with a malevolent reek.

“There’s a good girl.”

His tone thrummed low, soft, chilling...with a hint of mockery, a distressing reminder that he called the shots around the house. Gone was the distant, detached man who had been by her side at the hospital. In his place had settled a manipulating monster who took pleasure in making her jump out of her skin.

Against her will to not give in to his silent threat, her body shook with subtle tremors. The one vial of medicine still in her palm rattled with a nerve-wracking jangle as the pills inside danced from the involuntary movement. Couldn’t she be made of sterner stuff? Why did he have this effect on her, damn it?

Peter placed his cold hand onto hers and rubbed his long fingers along her wrist. She yearned to shrink back from the creepy, reptilian touch, but she couldn’t move. He’d make her do what she didn’t want.

He’d make her take the drugs.

Misery threading an icy path down her spine and into her soul as he reached for the small bottles. Her lower lip trembled to contain a sob, and she bit down on the flesh so hard, the coppery tang of blood flooded her taste buds, making her yearn to retch even more.

“Seems like you need to rest, Millie.”

His still-low voice sliced her like a thousand shards of sharp crystal, stabbing into her gut and at her pounding heart. He took one pill from each of the white vials, and two from the pink one, before he cradled her hand in his and placed the little spheres in her palm.

After putting the medicine bottles back in the cabinet, he swung the door closed. The mirror on the panel reflected their images. She stifled a gasp when the visual confirmation that he stood so close drove home. What a devastatingly handsome man; tall, with pale skin as flawless as the most precious Italian marble. His eyes had a unique, deep green hue, and locks of his expertly cut dark hair—the shade as intense as gleaming mahogany—brushed his wide forehead, which tapered down to an otherwise lean face. But no soul existed behind that façade. Nothing but darkness... And she couldn’t let him win. Ever.

Let Mercy Come (Corpus Brides Book 3: The Conclusion)

In this stunning conclusion to the Corpus Brides Trilogy, find out what happens when the dust settles in the aftermath of the mutiny inside their ranks. Danger is still lurking, though... as is death...

When he is chosen to bring the traitor Anastasiya back into the fold, Scott knows it will be just one more job he will successfully complete.

Zee hails from the multicultural, rainbow-nation island of Mauritius, in the southern Indian Ocean, where she grew up on the figurative fence—one side had her ancestors’ Indian and Muslim culture; the other had modernity and the global village. When one day she realised she could dip her toes into both sides without losing her integrity, she found her identity.
This quest for ‘finding your place’ is what she attempts to bring in all her stories, across all the genres she writes. Her heroines represent today’s women trying to reconcile love, life, & relationships in a melting pot of cultures, while her heroes are Alpha men who often get put back into their rightful place by the headstrong women she writes. Love is always a winner in her stories, though; that’s a given.
