Q. Why did you choose to write an alien as a hero/heroine?

A. In my upcoming sci-fi romance novel, Antidote: Love and War, Book 1, the heroine is human and the hero is a member of the powerful alien Vithii race. This is my first foray into SFR, though I’ve already fallen in love with it as a genre.

It’s also my first foray back into heterosexual romance in a very long time. Whatever name I’ve made for myself as an author, I’ve done writing LGBT romance—mostly MMF paranormal ménage (The Horse Mistress and The Lion Mistress), with a smattering of contemporary gay romance (Diamond Bar Alpha Ranch).

So, to answer the question about why I wrote an alien hero, it’s the same reason I write LGBT romance with gay, bisexual, non-binary, and transgender heroes and heroines. I have no patience for contrived drama in romance books. I can only get excited about writing stories where the drama in the relationship arises naturally from the characters’ circumstances.

It is inherently difficult to connect with someone who is... other. The stranger, the person we don’t understand, the one we are told is different from us.

In Antidote, Skye Chantrell—a human accountant on the colony world of Ilarius—is thrust into a situation far beyond her ability to deal with. Then, just when she thinks things couldn’t possibly get any worse, her damaged shuttle crashes on an abandoned lunar outpost that has been taken over by a group of dangerous Vithii fugitives, led by the terrifying Hunter Tarthasian.

Now her people’s survival—not to mention her own—rests in the hands of the Seven Systems’ most feared and hated criminal.

Not, it might be said, the most promising scenario for love to blossom. But one thing romance readers know about love: it can be found in the most unlikely of places, if only you can overcome your fear and take a leap of faith.

Skye never expected to find an ally in the form of a terrifying alien who could crush her with his bare hands. Hunter never expected to find his fated bondmate in the form of a frightened human accountant thrust without warning into the middle of a bloody civil war.

Together with Hunter’s ragtag family of choice, they’ll have to risk everything to prevent genocide on a scale beyond imagination.

Author Bio

R. A. Steffan began writing for pleasure in 2005. After honing her skills for a few years in amateur circles, she eventually transitioned into freelance nonfiction writing and ghostwriting professionally published short fiction. In 2015, she made the jump to publishing full-length novels and series.

Much to her surprise, her Horse Mistress series won a 2016 Rainbow Award, and was nominated for the 2017 Lambda Literary Awards. She has written titles in the paranormal romance, fantasy romance, sci-fi romance, and historical action/adventure genres.

When not writing, the author enjoys reading, horseback riding, walking her dogs, and raising a small backyard flock of ducks.
