What is your social media persona?

This post is a question for you all, because I think I'm missing something when it comes to social media. First of all fear keeps me from blurting out my thoughts on Twitter and Facebook. Things sound so funny and insightful in my head, but once I write it on a post and realize that the whole world will get the chance to read and then judge it, I often twist and edit the original idea until it's no longer funny or insightful. Instead its safe. Safe is boring, but it's...well, safe. Who wants to be ridiculed?

But then there is the opposite side. People who say whatever the heck is on their mind are fascinating. They may not be the most liked, but they get attention. These are the people who care, and yet still don't care about what people think about them because they are doing what they know is right for them. This is the ultimate goal for me.

Would it be easier to express myself completely if I wasn't actually myself? On FB and Twitter I am Nana Prah (no pen name for me). Who I am in real life is who I am on social media and my blog. I don't like overwhelming people with information about my books because they are my actual friends and I don't want them to unfriend me because I'm promoting myself instead of sharing stuff about my life.

Now to my question. How many of you on FB and Twitter post as who you are in real life? If you take on a different persona, does it help you to be more expressive?

  2. I'm usually myself. It took me a long time to feel somewhat comfortable saying things on FB and Twitter. Like you, Nana, I second guess about what I write. What I try not to do, is rant and rave on FB or Twitter. I see so much of that, and its not pretty. I like to keep my personal views about politics and other things private, mostly....

    1. I'm with you about the rants. But every once in a while, when the person doesn't do it often, I know its a serious issue for them.

  3. Great question! My Google pic is a main character in my stories/books. I stay away from politics because those who would disagree or agree already do. I love interacting with fellow authors much better and more qualified than I. Twitter and Facebook personas are me but only partly.

    2. I agree - never post anything political. I steer clear of that. It can get you into serious trouble as an author.

  4. I think I've always been a bit of a blabber mouth in real life and on social media. I have to be careful sometimes that I say something without thinking too carefully about the consequences.

    1. Would this be an issue if you were completely anonymous? If people don't know you then you can say whatever you want with minimum consequences to the real you. But God help you if they find out who you are (Lol)

  5. I normally don't let out full steam on social media. I'm much more vocal and talkative than I appear on social media. lol!
