Review: Fireworks at Midnight (A Witch’s Night Out #3) by Tara Quan

The Blurb
Recent college graduate and part-time cat familiar Dulcina “Sweets” Gato is having the worst New Year’s Eve in living memory. End of year expenses trigger serious cash flow problems, and her microwave just went up in smoke. To make matters worse, her best friend’s overprotective big brother is back in town, and his return threatens to put a huge crimper on her nocturnal activities. The only thing she can look forward to is Madame Eve’s 1-Night Stand service. After all, she’s sick and tired of being a 21-year-old virgin.

Enforcement Agent Mikal Knight is a warlock on a mission. Having finally scored a transfer to Washington, D.C., he’s now at liberty to pursue the object of his desires—his baby sister’s best friend. But first, he has a vigilante to track down and a mysterious matchmaking service to investigate. Sent on an undercover operation, he resigns himself to a pointless 1-Night Stand on New Year’s Eve. As luck would have it, his mystery date’s identity might let him kill several birds with one stone.

My Review
There isn’t a Tara Quan novel I’ve read that I haven’t loved. She has a fresh voice that makes me laugh out loud throughout while reading. And boy can she pack in the heat.

I love a friends to lovers’ trope. Add that both Dulcina and Mikal (totally yummy) are magical beings with amazing powers and enough attraction flaring between them to burn up the pages and you had me at hello. A fast entertaining read that ushered me into the new year.

I give this five out five microwave shaped chocolate bar.

I purchased this book from Amazon.

Book Review: Operation Owl (Beyond Fairytales #3) by Tara Quan

A Beyond Fairytales Adaptation of Grimm’s The Owl

Five years ago, Maya Jain kissed her best friend only to have him run out of her dorm room and leave the state. When he shows up in Washington, D.C., a wanted fugitive sought after by every branch of the US government, she can’t bring herself to ignore his plight. As their physical relationship picks up where it left off, she decides it’s time to make him see her as more than the bespectacled, bookish girl he once called “Owl.”

After being accused of espionage and treason, Zack Strong needs a forensic accountant to help clear his name. Not knowing who he can trust, this white-hat hacker has no choice but to ask his former best friend and math tutor for help. Together they unravel a cyber conspiracy at the Barn, an NSA facility tasked to intercept electronic communications. But as they traverse the nation’s capital to avoid capture, Maya insists on letting their simmering sexual tension take its natural course. Even though he’s never been able to shake the memory of their one kiss, he refuses to let her give up her life for a man with no future.

Genre: Contemporary Romantic Comedy, Multicultural

My Review
I’ve read two other books by Ms. Quan and I enjoyed them both. This fairytale series is opening my eyes to stories I’ve never heard about.

I’ll admit to getting lost a little bit when it came to the computer stuff (my head is still spinning), but the story was wonderful. The story of nerds who made it seem cool because it helped them to figure out the mystery. I hadn’t expected the book to be filled with such espionage and action. I love the action.

And the romance was hot. Five years in the making, it had to be. It was sweet and hot at the same time.

I give this book five out of five owl shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased this book from Amazon.

Review: Frosty Relations by Tara Quan #ParanormalRomance

The Blurb
Attorney Jack Frost never understood why holidays did weird things to people. His secretary went on vacation, his best friend ditched their annual Aspen trip, and the law firm’s stubborn human resources assistant refuses his clerical support request. What’s a warlock to do on Christmas Eve but go on a 1-Night Stand? But when an oddly familiar empath shows up as his date, this ice mage has a hard time denying the magic of the winter solstice.

Faced with an anemic employment market and financial woes, college graduate and former witch Mina Mao lands an HR assistant job at Frost and Sons. Having spent her day saving Christmas from Frost Junior’s Grinch-like behavior, she accepts the gift of Madame Eve’s service and heads over to the Castillo Capital. When her date turns out to be her childhood crush and workpla

My Review
If I had known there was a book one to this story (I bought it because I was so enthralled with the cover and the blurb) I would’ve read it first. As it turns out I’ll be reading it anyway.
Jack Frost was not the most likeable character for me, at least in the beginning, but then I warmed up to him as his personality (still a bit of an ass) shone through. He was one funny man, though.

Mina on the other hand was the sweetest woman a person could know. Her cool leveled control when she had to deal with both Jack and the drama life threw her way was inspiring.

Together they complimented each other. Always a good thing in a couple.

I found it to be a fulfilling story. Most likely because they had history.

I purchased this book from All Romance ebooks. It can also be bought at Amazon.

Review: Delicious Delay by Tara Quan #Romance #Giveaway

I'm an avid follower of Tara's blog. I was going to read and review this book, but Godess Fish gave me the opportunity to share my review to a larger audience.

Tara will be awarding a $15 Amazon/BN GC to a randomly drawn winner via rafflecopter during the tour.
BLURB:

Stranded in a Middle Eastern airport, Michelle Day finds herself the object of interest for an abrasive, but all-too-sexy stranger—a stranger who tempts her with the forbidden in a land where indecency could get her killed. But how does one say no to such a deliciously, relentless pursuit?

Khalid Al Dehri takes one look at the red-headed spitfire in the business class lounge and knew he’d either been transported to heaven—or hell. Her tart response to his surliness intrigues him beyond all propriety and the longer he spends in her company, the more he can’t deny his forbidden attraction. But will she explore the sensuality between them or will society’s rules keep them apart?

My Review

A fulfilling novella filled with loads of sass, luxury, and heat. I wasn’t sure what to expect when Michelle initially met Khalid. How would a normal working class woman end up with a rich powerful sheikh? I kept wondering where the happily ever after would come from. I shouldn’t have been concerned at all. Ms. Quan did a fabulous job of making sure I smiled in the end.

My favorite part of the novella was the unexpected fall both of them took into romance. Opposites, yet compatible.

A wonderful, light story. I’m hoping there will be a sequel.

I give Delicious Delay four out of five airplane shaped chocolate bars. A perfect quick summer read.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Excerpt:

He grinned. “So I have a proposal.”

She tried to get her breathing under control, without much success. “Why am I sure it’s an indecent one?”

He motioned his head toward the far end of the lounge. Latticed wooden screens gave that particular section more privacy. In an L-shaped room, the tucked-away location prevented a direct line of sight from the dining or reception areas.

He got up and offered her his hand. She hesitated for a long moment before taking it. With faltering footsteps, she followed him. More private or not, limits on how far this could go existed due to them being in an airport lounge. Since her self-control had chosen today to take a vacation, she appreciated the imposed constraint.

He lowered himself onto a plush leather sofa deep inside the cordoned area. With walls on either side and screens strategically angled, the space seemed to have been designed as a spot for people to nap.

On the brink of crossing a dangerous line, she hesitated. “What exactly do you have in mind?”

“I’m just giving you the opportunity to have your way with me,” he offered, his face the picture of innocence.

She hadn’t expected that answer. “I don’t quite follow.”

He kicked one of his legs out and tangled it with hers. She stumbled and instinctively moved her hands forward to brace herself. Her palms flattened over his hard muscled chest when she landed.

She traced the shape of his pectorals. “What do you do all day? Work out?”

He chuckled, the low rumble all male. “I have access to the best personal trainers money can buy. They help keep me honest.”

She shook her head in disbelief as the man preened. “Have you heard of a concept called humility?”

“It’s not one of my virtues,” he admitted. “I’ve never understood the point.”

She sighed. “It’s the polite thing to do.”

He placed his forefinger under her chin and tipped her head up, his expression playful. “So what is a sweet, polite, goody two shoes doing on top of me?”

From Idea, to Title, to Story -The Evolution of Delicious Delay by Tara Quan

Today I'd like to welcome fellow Decadent Publishing author Tara Quan with her brand new release Delicious Delay (doesn't that cover look yummy?). Take it away Tara.

I’d like to start to by thanking Nana Prah for letting me plug my new release from Decadent Publishing. A contemporary romance, Delicious Delay came out on December 27. The blurb and excerpt are at the end of this post, and I’ve been updating my website (http://taraquan.com/delicious-delay/) with all the buy links. And thus ends my self-promotion for the day—on to my actual post.

I might be in the minority here, but I’m one of those authors who start off with a title before coming up with a story. That’s right—I’m a prompt writer! It’s why I love reading submission calls. They give me a central idea around which I can build my romance.

During a hot and unpleasant journey back to the U.S., I was delayed in the UAE for about eight hours. Assailed by boredom, I sent out a tweet casually remarking about how a delay in the desert could be an interesting premise for a romance.

To my surprise (I’m of the opinion that no one reads my tweets), a book blogger and Goodreads buddy replied with suggestions for possible titles. One of them was Delicious Delay.

At the time, I didn’t even have a story—just a setting and a title. But the more I thought about those two simple words, the more plot bunnies invaded my mind. By the time I crossed the Atlantic Ocean, the book was mentally born. It took me quite a while longer to transcribe it all into words.
