Relationships between Doctors and Nurses #romance #medicalromance

I’ve been in the healthcare field for over fifteen years. One thing I’ve noticed is that medical doctors and nurses go together like peanut butter and jelly, rice and beans, me and chocolate. A seemingly good combination right? Hmmmm.

My apologies to the 24% of doctors who don’t fit into this category (my statistics only), but for the most part doctors are players, at least during their early residency years. Perhaps as they become more mature they settle down, but until then, watch out nurses.

I have one line in Midwife to Destiny where Ora makes a comment to her cousin, Esi about dating doctors.

“You remember what Dr. Miller said once? ‘Student nurses are incentives.’”

I’m sad to inform you that this is a real quote taken from an actual doctor. My jaw dropped when I heard him say it. I knew that doctors were bad, but not that bad.

Doctors tend to be portrayed as players who dally with nurses in movies and television shows such as ER and Grey’s Anatomy. In my opinion, the writers get these wild character attributes from more than just their imaginations.

I may rag on doctors, but I love ‘em (in a platonic manner). As I mentioned before, not all of them use women.  They just won’t date my daughter until after they’ve completed residency and finished sowing their wild oats.

What's your opinion?

  1. I have a lot of friends who are nurses, but I don't really know any doctors. My one friend is married to an ER doctor but I don't know him that well. You know better than I, so I'll take your word for it :)

    Interesting post!!

    1. I'm curious about who the rest of your friends married. Police or ambulance drivers perhaps?

  2. As a married female doc in residency who spends a lot of time around single male docs, I can definitely confirm this, lol. But I don't think this happens only in the medical field...it happens in every field with a group of young people, really.

    1. Thanks for your insider's input, L.D. It may be a matter of youth rather than the professions.

    2. I'm mistaken, I know Linda (LD) but in my defense, I was thinking male doctors and Linda is a lovely lady :)

  3. I have chronic health issues and spent a lot of 2001 - 2003 in and out of hospitals. The nurses were awesome and confirmed that real life is not an episode of ER.

When the doctors started getting on my nerves, sometimes I'd snap something like "Why aren't you more like George Clooney?" I might have been *difficult* at times....

    1. I think if they were all like George Clooney, the hospitals would be full with single young females with falsified medical issues. But it would be awesome.

  4. My OBGYN divorced his wife to marry his nurse. I believe there's definitely something going on there...doctors work long hours and a cute nurse is sometimes hard to resist, I guess. Though, I wouldn't know for sure. My son, a resident doctor laughingly says, "Don't believe those medical shows with doctors and nurses making out in closets...." Hmmmm....
