Z is for Zet #atozchallenge

Just to be fair, there are two countries in Africa which begin with Z - Zambia and Zimbabwe (Zaire used to be amongst, but it got changed to the Democratic Republic of Congo).

I'm not going to talk about either of those countries. Instead we'll discuss the letter Z and it's pronunciation here in Ghana. It threw me off when I first heard Z (zzzzzz) pronounced as Zet. Really that's how they say it. So when children say the alphabet, they start with A and finish with Z(et). But if Z is used in a word they pronounce it the regular Z. Zebra is not Zetbra.

I'm not sure where this comes from, but I bet it has something to do with the British and their weird English. Correct me if I'm wrong.

And with that I am finished with the A to Z(et) blogger challenge for 2014. Great job Nana from Ghana!

Thank you for stopping by my blog during the challenge. I hope you learned a little about Africa and the wonderful things and people that come from here. I'll leave you with one of my favorite songs from South Africa.

Today is also the last day to enter to win a $20 Amazon gift card.

This is a gigantic blog hop so click here to see what other bloggers are discussing for this letter. Have fun.

  1. Those Brits and their weird English . . . at least they have the sexy accent going for them. :P

This was great to learn. Zet. I like it. It gives the alphabet a finality when you get to the end. Boom!

  8. Ah, Nana, we in Ghana find the American way of speaking so weird! And their lazy way of spelling! I also find the Z funny and prefer the Zet!

You did great with the challenge. Not easy at all

  12. I've heard Z pronounced as Zed before (I think from the UK side of the pond), but never Zet. That's so weird that there are so many pronunciations of one letter.

Congrats on making it to the end of the A to Z challenge!

  14. Yup, 'Zed' is technically the correct way to say Z in Canada too, but no one does. We like to mix our American English and our British English to frustrate everybody. We also use a mix of imperial and metric measuring systems, mwuahahaha!

  15. It has been fun! I really enjoyed reading your A to Z. (Also, when I learned English in Hungary, we also said Zet. And then we said Vauve for W, just to throw some German in there. :D)
    Cheers!
