An Affair to Remember - Is Love at First Sight Real? #romance

I had a discussion with a friend about love at first sight. I’m a romantic at heart and I love watching romance movies, writing and reading romance novels. But I admit that I don’t believe in love at first sight (I’m not ruling it out 100%, maybe just 95%). Lust at first sight definitely exists at 100%.

One of the most romantic movies acted by the most debonair  actor that ever hit the silver screen was An Affair to Remember.

The premise was that two people meet on a ship and fall deeply in love. Unfortunately they're both involved with other people at the time. They agree to meet on the top of the Empire State Building in one year (after dumping their significant others) if they still feel the same. One of them shows up, but the other doesn’t (The movie is ancient but I don’t want to spoil it for anyone so I’m not going to tell you what happened after that).

I would like to believe in that instant deep magical kind of love. The kind of love I write for my characters. I know that life is not a book and for me it takes time to know I'm in love with an individual.  It may be possible that I just haven’t found that instant love guy yet (hence the 95% non-belief).

Do you believe in love at first sight or is it a bunch of baloney?

  1. I believe it happens. I have seen enough interviews with couples married 30 years or more who were each other's first love and still going strong. Seen it for myself as well. While I'm yet to experience it, self-experience doesn't prove the existence of anything. I've never bungee jumped but I know others have and survived. Not interested in doing it myself though. Boy am I off topic. The movie sounds real nice Nana with a bit of romantic angst thrown in.

    1. Lol, Sheena-kay. You've made your point and the bungee jump example was appropriate.

Yes, I believe in love at first sight.

    1. Good to know, Kiru. The movie was fantastic. I love Cary Grant. He died before I could marry him.

  3. Never seen this movie Naan. And I wish I could see it. Sounds like my cup of tea. But hei, I definitely believe in love at first sight (I'm married to my childhood sweetheart) and yes, it is absolutely possible to be involved with someone and yet fall in love with another.

    1. Hmmmm. Very interesting, Celestine. I like hearing about it from a Ghanaian perspective where love doesn't always come into play.

  4. Hi Nana,
When I was 13 I met my soul mate. The moment I looked at him I heard angelic music--really! Like a full blown choir with a beautiful angelic orchestra! We knew things about each other that we never spoke aloud. That's never happened again. We were together for 2 years, too young to connect to whatever life we could have spent together. To this day, a little flame burns in my heart for him.

    1. That is such a sad story, Carole. It makes me wonder if he was your true soul mate. Or perhaps there is a chance for you two later on down the road.
