Review: We Are Not Alone: The Writer’s Guide to Social Media by Kristen Lamb

For those writers who know little to nothing about social media, We Are Not Alone: The Writer’s Guide to Social Media, by the guru of social media herself, Kristen Lamb, is for you.  Building a platform is important in a writer’s career and Ms. Lamb teaches you how build a platform as simply as possible.  The book gives the reader step by step directions on how to set up  FB, Twitter and MySpace (I’m wary about  My Space, I can’t figure out if it exists anymore) accounts.

I set up a tweetdeck account though her instructions and now I find it easier to navigate twitter.  Ms. Lamb makes it easy to do things with social media that seem scary at first glance.

It is a wonderful book that I highly recommend.  Because I had previously read  Are you There Blog? It’s Me, Writer (see my review), I had already done a lot of the things Ms. Lamb had suggested, so most of the information wasn’t fresh to me, but it was a good reminder.

If you are a new writer and know little to nothing about social media, then get yourself a copy of this book, read, learn and implement her teachings.  You will be immensely glad that you did.

  1. Thanks, Nana - I'll have to invest in this book. I do not manage my social media time well and find it a time suck that takes away from writing but it's a necessary evil.

  2. I haven't read Kristen's books, but took her class "Blogging To Build A Brand". I learned a ton and made some great connections. This book sounds like it would be a good refresher. I should check it out.

  3. I tend to procrastinate with social media when I should be buckling down and getting some writing accomplished, or anything else for that matter. Thanks for sharing Nana.

    1. Social media is necessary (and fun), but it sucks up time.

  4. From something Kristen posted on her blog the other day, this book isn't for sale any longer since it's now out of date. She did say she'll be updating it and re-releasing it. :) Her new book is "Rise of the Machines - Human Authors in a Digital World." I bought it this week but haven't had a chance to dive into it yet.

    1. Thanks for the update Juli. I think it's the My Space that outdated her. I saw her new book and the cover is awesome. I'd like to know what you think of it.

  5. Hi Nana!

As you know I've been out of commission the last few months taking care of my dad, now partially paralyzed from the waist down by cancer. What's worse is that in the midst of getting ready to have my first book released, I have to move out of the house and only have a few days to find a home for me and my 2 dogs. The thing is, social media still has to be addressed amidst this upheaval.

I agree that it may be a tedious process but it's necessary, especially when ready to launch a new book like I am doing right now.

Count me among the many who are willing to fess up to ignorance when it comes to the internet and all it has to offer. The important thing is that we writers take full advantage of the low cost, highly efficient online experience with the help of people like Kristen Lamb, and you, who pass the information on to us. Thanks so much!
