Spotlight and Review: Forest Girl by Empi Baryeh

Title: FOREST GIRL
Author: Empi Baryeh
Genre: Multicultural Romance, Africa
Length: Full length novel

¸.•´¨❥¸.•´¨ BLURB¸.•´¨❥¸.•´¨

Esi Afriyie has been in love with Michael Yaw Badu since childhood. When he receives a scholarship to study in America, all hope seems lost ... until he returns to Ghana ten years later. An arranged marriage contracted by their families makes her dreams come true, but does the reality of being Mrs. Michael Badu live up to the fantasy?

Michael may have married Esi, but he is in love with someone else—Forest Girl, a mystery woman he encountered just once in the forest. His heart belongs to her, and he doesn't need his beautiful wife awakening his carnal desires. He is even willing to sacrifice his marriage for another encounter with Forest Girl.

Reality is not what either Esi or Michael imagined. Esi is disillusioned; Michael feels trapped.
Will Michael give in and allow his heart to discover a love that was always meant to be, before it's too late?

He fell in love with her at first sight,
but didn't recognize her when he saw her again.

My Review
Esi is one of the sweetest characters that I’ve encountered in a long time. An educated woman from the village who knows how to handle herself and make the most of any situation she’s placed into. A strong woman who held a long time unrequited love for a man she would end up marrying. Once she married Michael her strength grew and I appreciated her character even more for having to endure what she did while still keeping the faith that everything would work out (even though I had my doubts).

While Esi was confident about what she wanted, Michael was lost and searching for what he thought would be his anchor. Because of this uncertainty, some of his actions during the story annoyed me. By the end of the book he had grown into a better person, I believe his true unstressed self, and that’s always a good thing to happen to a hero.

A lovely romantic sojourn to Ghana.

I give this book five out of five ax (you’ll get it when you read the book) shaped chocolate bars.

He didn’t want to get personal. He just needed to perform the act.
Michael had had every intention of sleeping on the floor tonight. He’d spent a good part of the afternoon fielding the suggestive comments a few bold men had made about tonight. It didn’t help that his manhood hardened with interest at the prospect, defying his own resolve not to touch his wife.

But she tempted him, standing there in her short night dress that barely reached the middle of her thighs. Her eyes stared at him, filled with innocence and passion all at the same time.

Turn around, Mike. Walk away before it’s too late.

She folded her arms beneath her pert breasts again, pushing them up in a manner he could not ignore. It may have been a manifestation of nerves, but his body sprang alive. He bit back a curse, realising he couldn’t walk away even if he wanted to.

He needed to consummate the marriage. If their union broke, as he wished it to, it couldn’t be because he hadn’t claimed her as his wife in every way. Such news never remained hidden. He’d be branded as something less than a real man, and that would certainly affect the elders’ already doubtful opinion of him.

However, when he took a step towards her, he knew at the back of his mind that it wasn’t out of obligation. He wanted to taste her lips again, feel her soft breasts press against his chest, know the taste of her tongue and every other secret part of her body.

“Put your arms around me, Esi,” he whispered.

Keep quiet, man. Talking made things personal. He didn’t want to get personal. He just needed to perform the act.

As she draped her arms around his neck, he lowered his head, so she wouldn’t have to stand on her toes. The gesture brought her face inches away from his. He closed the rest of the space between them, capturing her lips as he kissed her, gently at first, then more urgently as he lost control.

She tasted great; she smelled divine. Against all his convictions, he genuinely wanted her. At the core of it brewed an unexpected yearning in his heart that he didn’t attempt to understand. One thing was certain. Sex with her would be anything but casual—a thought that scared him, yet not enough for him to stop.

He didn’t know when he undressed her, but when they reached the bed, she was naked. He fumbled to take his clothes off.

¸.•´¨❥¸.•´¨ WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ¸.•´¨❥¸.•´¨

There are not enough words to describe how much I loved this story. The author painted a vivid picture with her fantastical storytelling. She crafted a story that made you fall in love with the characters and their stories that they had to tell.

Esi is one of the sweetest characters that I’ve encountered in a long time ... Once she married Michael her strength grew and I appreciated her character even more for having to endure what she did while still keeping the faith that everything would work out.

BLURB
Will their arrangement ever be enough?

Relationships are not a priority for restaurateur Esteban Galiano, and when he sees Sonia Kennedy at a party, he plans to make her a conquest in a long line of many. But she rebuffs his advances and forces him to adjust—determined to meet the challenge and do whatever he must to make her his.

All her life, Sonia’s beauty has caused unnecessary problems, and right now she needs a job, not a suitor. When Esteban makes an indecent proposal, her first instinct is to turn him down. But soon she’s rethinking her response. Maybe it’s time for her to use what she’s got, to get what she wants.

EXCERPT

The food was excellent, starting with a platter of picada, served on a wood plate overflowing with a fine selection of salami, ham, and cubed cheese. Not wanting to spoil her appetite, Sonia ate a modest amount, but Esteban had no such limitations. He ate heartily and washed everything down with the delicious red wine.
When their entrees arrived, the sight and smell of the steak made Sonia’s stomach dance in anticipation. She wasn’t disappointed. The grilled steak was well seasoned, tender, and juicy, served with a side of basil-fried corn and chimichurri sauce. The fresh garlic and spices danced across her palate, and she emitted an involuntary moan.
“You like it?” Although the words came out as a question, they sounded more like a statement.
“Delicious,” Sonia replied, around a mouthful of meat.
With a satisfied smile, Esteban sliced into his own steak, kept company on the plate by a fried lobster tail. “We haven’t even gotten to the best part yet.”
“And what’s that?”
“Dessert.”

Across the table, his eyes danced with a teasing light, and a throb of heat blossomed between Sonia’s legs.

Review: Worthy (Challenge #3) by Kiru Taye #EroticRomance

The Blurb
Some secrets bind you...
Tessa Obum and her best friend, Anuli, are linked by a dark secret that could destroy them if it ever comes to light. Men are just the means to an end and society shuns women like her. But she's determined to live on her terms and own her future. Until an encounter with the intense Peter has her questioning her choices.

Some challenges can break you...
Peter Oranye has never had a challenge he couldn't conquer. Except the death that claimed the only woman he loved. He's been unable to get close to another woman since and his life is focused on growing his business empire. Until Tessa, a sexy bombshell of a woman tumbles into him one night and he's ready to break his abstinence streak.

Getting involved with a woman who won’t let go of her BFF is wrought with dangers, especially when someone else wants to destroy them. When their secrets come to light, will any of them be worthy of the love they crave?

My Review
It’s been a while since I read book 2 in the challenge series, Engaged. It was well worth the wait to get my hands on Worthy. Ms. Taye took this story in a direction I hadn’t expected (and I liked it). I have no idea why I was surprised, Ms. Taye is known for placing her characters in rather risqué situations.

I was initially concerned about Tessa and Peter’s gaping social status. Peter was a self-made man from a highly respectable family while Tessa, let’s just say she’s had a very difficult life where she had to, and continues to, struggle to reach the level she’s achieved. I could really empathize with Tessa doing what she had to do to survive. She was such a sweet woman despite the harshness of her life.

Peter shocked the heck out of me, and that’s all I’ll say about that.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and already have the 4th in the series, Captive, waiting for me on my Kindle.

I give this book five out of five, um…let’s just leave it at round, shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased my copy from Amazon.

Kindred: An American Love Story P.J. Dean

The Blurb
An herbalist and free woman of color, Kindred Twain and Lelaheo/Cassian Harkness, an Oneida Indian, had been inseparable since childhood, so it was no surprise to anyone when their childhood bond blossomed into love as they grew into adulthood. Neither suspected when they agreed to wait to wed until Lelaheo had completed his medical studies in Europe that they were poised on the eve of the American Revolution, or that a young British miss named Adeline would threaten to tear them apart forever.

Prelude to my review
I don’t always remember where I hear about a book, but I do recall this one being reviewed on Brazen Babe Reviews blog. The way she raved about it sent me straight to Amazon where purchased the book. This is the second time she’s led me down a rather adventurous path I may not have taken on my own.

My Review
This book incorporated at least four cultures into one wonderful historical romance and I learned more than I’d anticipated.

I sighed at the end of this story (in a good way). So much emotion was poured into it. First of all let me say that anything that discusses slavery gets me a little angry. It’s the nature of the history of slavery and how the slaves were treated in such a sub-human manner. Add to the struggle of slavery, that of the Native Americans and I was more than upset with some of the characters in the book, and history in general.

Ms. Dean presented the past in an honest light, with the hope that some experienced during that time all with a unique love story. A friends-to-lovers novel that pulled at my heart and made me so happy that love could persevere during a time when hatred had a tendency to rule (Yes I realize this was a work of fiction).

I adored Kindred, her intelligence and her feistiness. And Lelaheo was perfect – just perfect. I will mention that there was one scene where I wanted to kick his behind, but I won’t expound upon it.
This was a fabulous novel. I give this book five out of five head scarf shaped chocolate bars.

Review: Bound to Fate by Kiru Taye

The Blurb
Lara Johnson is coping with the emotional scars of losing both parents in a tragic incident and facing the challenges of starting a new school. Getting involved in a relationship isn't on her priority list. Certainly not this illicit desire for a man, who demands the best from her, yet leaves her breathless in his presence.

All Ike Thomas wants to do is to keep out of trouble and get through the one year internship required for his degree program. But trouble finds him, in the form of an intelligent and brave girl who turns his world upside down. Falling in love is forbidden. So why does it feel so right?

A love like theirs cannot be denied. But catastrophe lies in wait and one night changes their lives forever.

Bound to Fate is a story about surviving tragedy, forgiveness, and the overwhelming love that pulls through against the odds.

Content warning: This book contains scenes that might be triggering for some readers.

My Review
I love a book that can take me through a range of emotions. The fear elicited by an inappropriate crush (which I secretly wanted to succeed because it was so much more than a crush). Hope for the heroine who had been through so much in her life. A chastisement for the hero who should’ve known better and yet followed his heart anyway. Raw anger at characters who were downright wretched.

Bound to Fate ended up being different from what I’d anticipated, but it a good way. The harsher aspects gave it a depth I wasn’t expecting. It’s setting in Nigeria added to the atmosphere of the novel. The story moved along at a wonderful pace. Before I knew it I was halfway through without realizing where the time had gone.

I give this book four out of five backpack shaped chocolate bars.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

It can be purchased at Amazon.
