Review: Shadow's Dream (The Kyn Kronicles, #5) by Jami Gray

The Blurb
Bitter betrayals and hidden truths forge shattered dreams…

Cheveyo, the most powerful Magi in the Northwest Kyn, lives with one regret—walking away from Tala Whiteriver. When he is sent to broker an alliance with the Southwest Kyn, he recognizes his chance to rectify his mistake, but soon realizes the challenge may be more difficult than expected.

As the youngest Kyn to lead a house, Tala’s a force to be reckoned with, but her role came at a steep price. When an unprovoked attack by the Southwest alpha threatens her position and forces her to face judgment, she finds an unexpected ally in the man who once claimed her heart.

As a series of deadly events unfolds, tensions began to rise between the Southwest houses, with a Tala firmly trapped in the center. Before Tala and Cheveyo can quell the approaching storm, they must untangle a treacherous plot and expose the architects of a devil’s bargain designed to fracture the Kyn. Will Cheveyo and Tala be able to move beyond the confines of their positions and trust their hearts to forge new dreams before the impending nightmare sweeps them apart forever?

My Review
In keeping with the other books in the series (which I loved) Shadow’s Dream was filled with the perfect balance of paranormal action, fight scenes, emotional turmoil, romance, character growth, and twists (some more shocking than others).

I loved this book. Loved it. Cheveyo is a favorite of mine. So strong, calm and ultra-powerful. Tala had her own intense power and as the story progressed I learned the true relationship between Cheveyo and Tala and what they’d had to endure in the past to get to where they were in the present. They make an amazing couple who I rooted for from the beginning.

Raine and Gavin make a cameo in this story which made my day.

By the way I lost sleep while reading this novel because I didn’t want to put it down.

I give this book five out of five lake shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased my copy from AmazonUK

Review: Marked by Obsession (Psy-IV Teams 3) by Jami Gray #ParanormalRomance

The Blurb
Asking for his help will expose more than her heart…

Meli Dwyer’s ordered life followed a clear-cut path, just the way she preferred until the death of her beloved brother. Rocked by her loss and grappling with the emotional fallout, a series of unexplained events marked by an escalating violence send her world into chaos. Alone and floundering in her harsh new reality, she reaches out for help from the sexy and mysterious warrior who managed to sneak under her guard, Wolf.

But some risks are worth taking…

When Wolf receives an unexpected call from the illusively alluring Meli, the PSY-IV Team’s skilled and lethal telepath doesn’t waste time racing to her side. Months earlier she ignited his protective instincts and her call gives him the perfect opportunity to set siege to her wary heart. Before he can breach the scars of her past, he’s engaged in a dangerous game beside the one woman he can’t read, facing an enemy whose motives and obsessions blur his lines between justice and revenge.

As the stakes rise, Meli must decide if the answers to her personal nightmare are worth uncovering if it costs her the man who captured her battered heart.

My Review
The stories in this series keep getting better. I don’t know if it’s because I fell in love with Wolf in the last book or because the story was just that darn excellent.

Meli isn’t the typical strong female character that kicks ass and asks questions later, but she has an inner strength that some people wouldn’t be able to touch. She has gone through a lot in her life (Ms. Gray spared no expense to make this woman suffer – she tried to destroy her psychologically, emotionally and physically), but she persevered, because she has a tenacity of spirit that no one can ever take away from.

Wolf is an alpha to the core, add to that his amazing psychic ability and hot body, and I end up having to have to fan myself at the mere thought of him. Yet he wasn’t always as strong as he could’ve been throughout the story, this made him completely human in my eyes, more accessible and less deliciously perfect, but a better more accessible hero. He and Meli were a match made in heaven.

Just so you know before you start reading the book, Ms. Gray is horrible to her characters (For her sake I hope they never come to life), which makes the book that more intriguing because you really have no idea what’s coming next.

I give this novel five out of five backpack shaped chocolate bars.

Book Review: Touched By Fate (Psy-IV Teams 2) by Jami Gray #Paranormal

The Blurb
Trusting him with her secrets is dangerous. Trusting him with her heart could be fatal.

As a specialized consultant for the Department of Defense, Risia Lacoste understands the bargaining chip of a well-kept secret. When her current assignment threatens to unearth her deeply buried skeletons, she’s forced into a high-stakes game of lies and loyalty where even her ability to foresee the future can’t predict the winner.

Darkness lies under the skin of every man, and PSY-IV Team operative and touch empath, Tag Gunderson, has the demons to prove it. Scarred by betrayal and disillusionment, he’s not Risia’s top pick for a partner in the game, but he’s all she’s got.

As the game draws them deeper into a pit of intrigue and their list of enemies grow, will Risia trust Tag with more than her secrets or will his demons destroy them both?

My Review
I feel like this is a paranormal that could happen in real life and I love it. Tag is a military man who is Alpha to the core and yet his empathic ability makes him vulnerable. Risia is a strong woman who makes her really good living by manipulating people and digging up information. The fact that she can see the future is cool as hell. Ms. Gray adds a twist to how Risia’s future telling gift works which gave it a deeper dimension.

The story was filled with twists, turns, action and an intense romance that kept me turning the pages. It reads as a stand-alone, but it was nice to meet up with some of the characters from the first book. Believe me when I say that this series is on fire and I can’t wait to read book 3 which features a character that I’ve already fallen in love with because he’s so hot and his moniker is almost as awesome as his paranormal gift.

I give this book five out of five pen (it’s not as obscure as you think, you’ll understand when you read the book) shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased this book form Amazon.

Review: Hunted By The Past (Psy-IV Teams #1) by Jami Gray #ParanormalRomance

The Blurb
A reluctant psychic who can relive the past, a man well versed in keeping secrets, and a psychopathic killer enter a deadly game where the past determines the future.

Changing the past is an impossibility ex-Marine, Cynthia “Cyn” Arden, understands all too well. Struggling in the aftermath of a botched mission, which cost her two teammates, her military career, and a fledging relationship, she’s brought home by a panicked phone call. The psychic killer behind her nightmares has escaped military custody to hunt down the remaining teammates, one by one. Next on his murderous list—Cyn. Her only chance at survival is to master the psychic ability she’s spent years denying.

The killer’s game brings her face to face with the one person guaranteed to throw her off kilter—the unsettling and distracting man she left behind, Kayden Shaw. Once she believed he’d stand by her side, until he chose his job and his secrets over her. A choice that’s left the scars of the past etched deep on her mind and heart.

To survive this twisted game, Cyn must risk trusting her heart and accepting who and what she is, or lose not only her life, but the man she loves.

My Review
I’ve had this book sitting on my Kindle for a long time waiting for one thing – the release of the second book to draw near. I’m acquainted with Ms. Gray through her Shadow Series and her engaging story telling hooks me every time. I anticipated it happening with this series too. Which it did.

Ms. Gray took us deep into a paranormal psychological thriller which didn’t make me wonder who the bad guy was, but instead how the heck they would take the psychopath down without losing all of the team members. She made it seem so believable, as if people had powers the military could try to manipulate.

The romance between Cyn and Kayden was amazing. A nice simmer from the beginning because of their past (I would’ve like to have learned more about what happened between them before) that built to crescendo levels.

She introduced some awesome secondary characters with fabulous powers and I can’t wait to read book two.

I give this four out of five 9 mm gun shaped chocolate bars.

Urban Fantasy Forever! A Top 5 list #Urbanfantasy #Paranormal

I discovered urban fantasy about two years ago, and now I’m addicted. I have changed my reading pattern over the past couple of years. I’ll read a non-paranormal and then alternate it with a paranormal.

What attracts me to this sub-genre?

1. The strong women. I have yet to read an urban fantasy with a weak heroine. Do they all kick ass, um yes. If not with their fist or swords, then with their smart assed mouths. That’s what I’m talking about.

2. The cool skills the characters possess. From shifting, doing magic, reading minds, teleporting, to sword-mastery. It’s all so awesome. Things I’d love to do in real life.

3. The hero’s tend to be alphas. It’s a good thing, too, because the heroines would kick their asses if they weren’t. That’s all I have to say about that.

4. Snarky conversation. Do I need to explain? If I do I’ll refer you to Jami Gray’s Kyn Chronicle series (which I can’t get enough of) and leave it at that.

5. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bad urban fantasy cover. Authors know that what kicks ass inside must kick ass outside, too.

I write contemporary romance, but I’m trying my hand at an urban fantasy. It’s slow going because I keep getting interrupted with legitimate procrastination things like editing, and other stories which I’m better at writing because the style is more familiar.

If you’ve never read Urban Fantasy or you’re a great fan, I’d like to introduce you to Jami Gray. She has a book of short stories out (I got hooked from reading one of her short stories.) Out now!

Guestpost: Writers Read What? by Jami Gray #UrbanFantasy #Free

I'm hyper excited today because Jami Gray, author of my beloved Kyn series here to let us know a little about what happens to her when she read and writes at the same time.

You lucky readers get to read her first novel for FREE when you order it from Amazon. I highly recommend it and all the other books in the series.

Confession: I’m a writer, and I can’t read in the genre I'm writing in, until my story is done. Weird, right? Maybe.

Writers are told, if you write, you must read. And read I do. As a matter of fact, one of the biggest blessing of having an e-reader is that it doesn't take up as much space in my purse/backpack/luggage as paperbacks, nor does it encourage my Igor impression since one e-reader weighs weigh less than five to six paperbacks.

I'm a huge reader of a wide variety of genres because, if the story's good, I'm there. Those characters and worlds that suck you right in and haunt your every waking moment are like boxes of the finest chocolate for me. So, imagine my surprise when, early on in my writing career, I discovered what I read impacted what I wrote.

Now, I wasn't going around repeating word for word what I read, but my developmental process on story arc or character motivation would take turns that weren't true to my story. For a bit, I worried perhaps I'd lost my writing mojo or my Muse had decided to go into the witness protection program. Then, one day as Raine and I were discussing a potential situation, I realized why her voice sounded...well, off.  Somehow, she was channeling the heroine of the book I was currently reading.

Horrified, I immediately cut of all communication with Raine and sent her far, far away.  Then I quickly finished up the book I was reading (because you do not quit half way through a damn good book, ever), took a deep breath, and began examining the puzzle pieces of my creative process.

When I identified the exact moment, the actual decision Raine made that was completely foreign to her nature, I was then able to correct it, and get my story back on track.

Phew, crisis averted. I then had to deal with the very real withdrawal effects of not reading for the next few months as I finished my story. No way did I want to fall into that sneaky little trap again.

Of course, after the words THE END were typed, I engaged in a reading binge to end all reading binges. When I finally surfaced, I realized that because my creative process is a constant spinning mess in the back of my mind 24/7, I needed to keep a clear line between my current works in progress and what I read when working on them.

When I work with Raine, Xander, and Natasha, I suddenly devour romantic suspense or non-fiction pieces. When Cyn took up residence, I went right back to my first love, Urban Fantasy and Fantasy. So long as I can stay away from the same genre I'm writing in, I'm okay, and my story lines tend not to tangle. Plus, I find some really cool books out there. (THE HERETIC by Joseph Nassise is awaiting my dining pleasure).

Right now, I’m in-between projects, and am pondering a new series. I’m indulging in the finest selection of chocolates books—offerings by Joseph Nassise, Christine Feehan, Jennifer Ashley/Jennifer Lyon, Suzanne Johnson, Cristin Harber, John Patrick Kennedy, and oh so many more.

However, I'm not starving, because as soon as those are gone, I have a very long list to pick my next entrée from. So long as I don’t eat what I write, I should be good to go.

Since I know I'm not the only one out there, here's a question:

Readers--do you tend to stick to one genre at a time or do you mix it up?

Writers--what do you find yourself reading when you're in the midst of writing?

Review: Shadow’s Curse by Jami Gray #Paranormal

The Blurb
As the leader of the Amanusa, Natasha Bertoi thrives on chaos, but when tragedy strikes the Northwest Kyn, leaving bodies and betrayal in its wake, not even she is prepared for the fallout. With Northwest houses in an uproar and the Wraiths hungry for blood, all her carefully laid plans are put to the test as she wards off the greedy clutches of the ruling Kyn Council. Her plans and pawns are moving along nicely, until he joins the game.

Whispers of treachery draw Darius Abazi to the Northwest in search of justice honed with vengeance. After years of protecting the Council and its secrets he harbors no illusions on how lies can be twisted into truth. As death stalks the Northwest Kyn, he faces off with the beautiful, but manipulative Natasha to uncover the mastermind behind it all.

A dangerous attraction lures the two predators into a deadly game, where one wrong move could destroy all that Natasha holds dear.

My Review
I have no idea how Ms. Gray does it, but every single book in this series is AMAZING.

I had my doubts about Natasha. From the beginning I knew her to be a, well, let’s just say, not so nice person. It didn’t help that she’s a demon (the most ruthless of the Kyn). But darn it, Ms. Gray made me like her so much that I supported and rooted for her to kick ass (which she did very well).

As for Darius (delicious in both forms), Ms. Gray ensured at the start of the book that the reader didn’t know where he stood or how he worked into the Kyn system. By the end of the book I was in love with another Kyn.

Although all of the characters in this series are dynamic, my favorite continues to be Raine and I got a big enough dose of her to make me even happier with the story.

If you were waiting for more books of the series to be released before delving in then wait no more. Four of these novels will keep you occupied and happy for a while. As for me, I have a fan letter to write to Ms. Gray instructing her to get her behind in gear with book five.

I give this book five out of five mixed white and dark chocolate bars.

Review: Shadow’s Moon by Jami Gray #Paranormal #Romance

The Blurb
Even a wild heart can be broken…

A blonde, a brunette and a monster walk into a bar and all hell breaks loose.

It should have been the start of a bad joke, but days from a full moon Xander Cade, Tracker for the Northwest Motoki Pack, finds nothing funny about confronting an enraged Shifter in a crowded Portland nightclub filled with unsuspecting humans. The resulting carnage begins to fray the thin veil of secrecy shielding the supernatural Kyn community from public scrutiny. It also ensures there is no escaping the one man she’s been determined to avoid, her Alpha and mate, Warrick Vidis. Dominating, protective and compelling, Warrick threatens her individuality like no other.

As the Northwest Alpha wolf, compromise isn’t in Warrick Vidis’s vocabulary, but when his reluctant mate, Xander Cade, refuses to leave off the hunt for a killer, he has no qualms using whoever or whatever necessary to protect her or his pack. A series of unusual deaths involving lone wolves, along with anonymous threats against him and his Pack, begin to jeopardize his normal steely control. Add in Xander’s continual reluctance to fully accept their Soul bond, and the line between intellect and instinct begins to blur, leaving him wondering if one woman’s love and acceptance will be enough to save both man and wolf.

As the danger escalates, threatening not just their Pack but those closest to them, Warrick and Xander must find a way to trust each other and accept their rare bond or risk losing everything-their pack, their friends and each other.

My Review
This is my third and definitely not my last Kyn Chronicle book. Shadow’s Moon is spectacular. Once again Ms. Gray drew me into a story where it felt as if I were involved.

I fell in love with Warrick in the first book. How could I not love an alpha male  radiating with power and a little bit of instability. Xander is awesome. I love a kick ass female. I’ll admit that she’s a little on the violent side, but she’s a dominant wolf shifter and Wraith, she’d be weird if she were any other way. Warrick and Xander’s romance kept me rooting for them because it was sweet, violent, painful, and destined all at the same time.

The action scenes were fantastic. I don’t even know what to say about them because they were just that good.

There were a couple of scenes in the book which had me cussing Ms. Gray out. I couldn’t believe she did that to me, um, I mean the characters. I was really upset. To be honest I’m still holding out hope for one of the situations. I must be in the denial phase of grieving. (Yes, that’s how enthralling the book is).  If I believed in giving spoilers I’d tell you what the heck I’m talking about, but since I don’t you’ll have to read it for yourself. Which I totally recommend.

I can’t wait to lose more sleep while reading the next book of the series when it comes out.

Jami Gray is going to take up all my chocolate bars.   I give Shadow’s Moon five chocolate bars.

I purchased Shadow’s Moon from Amazon.

Review: Shadow’s Soul by Jami Gray

The Blurb
Raine McCord has no problem taking down the monsters of the world, it’s one of the reasons she’s so good at her job. So playing bodyguard to Cheveyo, head Magi of the Northwest, as he consults with the Southwest Kyn should be an easy assignment. Unfortunately, the simple task turns into a nightmare when Cheveyo is kidnapped and Raine is left for dead by one of the Kyn’s most feared beings, a Soul Stealer.

The Stealer’s attack leaves lasting wounds, undermining Raine’s confidence as a warrior and damaging her unruly magic. Her ability to heal her mind and spirit hinges on the one man who can touch her soul, Gavin Durand. Compelled to face the emotions raging between them, they must embrace not only their stormy relationship but their evolving magic to escape the twisted threads of murder and betrayal to find Cheveyo.

As Raine and Gavin come together and begin to unravel the complex web of secrets and hidden vendettas haunting the Southwest Kyn, they discover unsettling new truths that threaten their very existence.

My review
Jami Gray is a phenomenal writer. If I could push her onto the NYT bestselling list, I totally would because that’s where she belongs. She knows how to set the reader inside of the story, as if it’s happening around them and not just in the book.

I loved book one if the Kyn Kronicles - Shadow’s Soul. And I super love Shadow’s Edge. The depth of the romance between Raine and Gavin increased to a level that blew my mind. She packed the story with action and romance without taking away from either. Their relationship was powerful, on so many levels- physical, spiritual, magical, and emotional.

I have book 3 Shadow’s Moon sitting on my Kindle.  I have a feeling I’ll be losing more sleep reading that one, too.

I give Shadow’s Soul five out five interwoven threadlike (white, milk, and dark) chocolate bars.

Ms. Gray gave me a copy of the book after a little coercion. I was compelled to write a review because it’s absolutely fantastic.

READ AN EXCERPT
Since I didn’t want to touch him, much, I poked a finger against his chest, ignoring the unexpected zap of awareness. “I don’t know how you found me or why, but right now I have other, more important things to do. So, why don’t--”
The ringing of the phone interrupted my tirade.
I shot a look at the phone sitting on the counter to our left, and then narrowed my gaze at Kayden.
He quirked an eyebrow.
The phone rang again.
“You going to answer it?” he drawled.
Stepping back, I plucked the receiver off the cradle. “Hello?”
“Cyn?” What do you know, it was Thomas Anderson Gunderson, A.K.A. Tag.
I stared at the man standing across from me. “Yeah.”
“Where have you been? And why the hell won’t you answer my calls?” Despite his questions, there was a thread of relief in my friend’s voice. Ex-friend, I reminded myself.
“Why would I?” I gave my answer absently, watching Kayden make his way over to the other side of the counter and take a seat on a barstool.
In my ear, Tag cursed. “Dammit, Cyn. I don’t have time to explain shit now— ”
“Why are you calling me?” I cut him off, ice coating every word.
“Why are you in Sedona?” he shot back, his voice hard.
“I’m more concerned with how you got this number and why everyone seems determined to turn my cabin in to Grand Central Station.”
Momentary silence filled the line. “Shaw’s there?”
“Got it in one.”
“Thank God,” Tag muttered. “Be as bitchy as you want, Cyn, but tell me you’re okay. You ran away—”
“I didn’t run from shit, Tag, I was kicked to the fucking curb as soon as you and everyone else got what you wanted.”
“That’s not what happened.”
“Really? Because from where I stood, it sure as hell looked like it.” Silence answered. Turning away from Kayden’s too avid gaze, I tried to regain control so I could kick both of these men back out of my life. “I’m fine, but I’m little busy dealing with my own situation.”
“What kind of situation?” It actually sounded as if he gave a damn.
Closing my eyes, I tried to shove aside the urge to bang my head against a wall at the single minded intensity of the male gender. “My sister is AWOL. Now, can we just focus on why you’re bothering me and Kayden has decided to pursue a career in B&E?”
“How long has Kelsey been missing?”
The urgent note underlying Tag’s question reignited my earlier sense of unease, as if there was something bigger at play here. Worry about Kelsey trumped hurt feelings, so I answered. “Not sure, a couple hours maybe. Her car is here.”
The string of oaths spewing over the line from Tag proved no one could swear like a Marine. “Son of mangy bitch,” he muttered, then he took a deep breath. “The cabin’s an hour and half outside of Phoenix?” He didn’t wait for my answer. “I’ll meet you up there. Stay with Kayden.”
“Tag,” his name came out as a warning of my waning patience. My fingers tightened around the phone, and it took an amazing amount of will-power to not share my own colorful vocabulary. “You need to tell me what’s going on. Right. Now.” The last two words emerged around gritted teeth.
“It’s about Flash. His killer is out.” His unexpected answer stabbed deep, drawing blood under my skin. Brutal memories boiled up and I almost missed his, “Stay with Kayden, Cyn.”
The drone of a dial tone filled my ear. My world spun. I concentrated on setting the phone back in the cradle. My legs were doing a great impression of spaghetti noodles, so I let them fold under me and sat on the cool tile. Six months, I’d run as hard, as fast and as far as I could, but in a matter of minutes I was right back where I started, trapped in a never-ending nightmare.
You have to wonder which fickle fate decided to dump everything on me at once. If I ever got my hands on her, I’d beat her to a pulp. Damn, damn, and triple damn!
The past surged, breaking through to rise in a swamping wave of ghostly screams and the stench of burnt flesh. I dug my fingers deep into my thigh muscles in a desperate attempt to stave it off. No such luck. Greedy memories sucked me down.
My kitchen disappeared, replaced by a fetid alley behind a dive in Where-the-fuckistan. Sprawled on the ground, my head spinning with dizzying sickness and my leg screaming with agony, all I could do was watch and listen. Watch the spreading pool of blood and brains seep from Ortega, his sightless eyes staring past me. Listen to the snap and crackle of a raging fire hissed through the night while the smell of burning flesh wrapped around me. Behind me, someone screamed, his wail high-pitched and full of hopeless agony.
I knew that broken voice.
Even as excruciating pain beat inside my skull, I turned my head, recognizing the figure in the midst of the hellish scene. Searing loss, rage, and fear rose to a scream. My mouth opened and the stench coiled down my throat, blocking the air in my chest. No, no, no!
The shocking feel of hands against my face snapped my paralysis, bringing a touch of the present into the past. Desperate to escape, ignoring the pain radiating down my leg and through my head. I struck out, my hand connecting with flesh. “Don’t touch me!”

Harsh breathing filled the air around me. It took a few seconds to realize it was coming from me. A few more before the low soothing voice penetrated the layers of the past. “Come on back, Cyn. You’re safe.”
