Review: Wings of Flesh and Bones by Cathrina Constantine

The Blurb
An Angel. A Witch. A Demon. And A Choice.

Creatures from outer realms suck, as any gatekeeper worth their salt will tell you. Welcome to Rogan’s life, an orphaned seventeen-year-old who lives and trains with other misfits under her uncle’s roof, keeping Earth safe from non-human realm jumpers. Rogan’s biggest issue concerns her uncle’s short leash with her freedom—that is of course, until she’s taken by a notorious witch, and her life begins to unravel. Soon, the supernatural beauty discovers there’s a reason her uncle kept such a tight lock on her whereabouts, and that she has more than angel blood running through her veins.

Eighteen-year-old Max is an angel, and Rogan’s mentor and guardian. He’s well aware of her tenacious inability to obey orders, though he also knows she’s a fierce fighter. When he’s involved in a scheme that ultimately gets Rogan kidnapped, he must battle his way back to her in an attempt to save her from the darkness threatening to possess her.

My review
This story took me on a roller coaster ride of adventure, romance, magic and growth. Rogan is an amazing heroine, we see her develop and learn so much during the book. From an impetuous, stubborn, ready to defend the world young woman, to someone who thinks through the situation before acting.

The character’s dialogue had me chuckling with the sarcastic lines. A paranormal tale that kept me enthralled and turning the pages to see what would happen next. I’m not going to share any spoilers, but there are some surprises in the story where I found myself smiling.

I'm hoping there will be more stories coming from this book because there are some character's stories I wouldn't mind reading.

I give this book five out of five AK47 (I just had to) shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased my copy from AmazonUK.

Review: Incense and Peppermints by Cathrina Constantine

The Blurb
Peace demonstrations, sit-ins, and burning the U.S. flag following the escalation of the Vietnam War are leading to a catalyst known to the world as the Sixties. A musical revolution, flower power, hippies, marijuana, and drugs are carrying the generations—young and old—into a new decade. All the while sixteen-year-old Mary Monroe is caught between being an innocent good girl and an autumn of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll.

When her brother offers a solution to her dilemma in the form of a little pill, Mary ignores the rumba in her brain and takes a walk on the wild side. Plunged into popularity and a life she’s only imagined, she meets Michael Covington, the hot newcomer, and she’s instantly drawn in by his less than flawless exterior and bad boy sex appeal. Caught up in the danger and excitement as they drift from party to party, into underground fight clubs, and through a series of drug and alcohol fueled adventures. Mary follows her new crush into a world where young girls are never truly safe from the predators lurking in the shadows and where young men are hiding from the harsh reality of war.

Feeling buzzed and as if her life is spinning out of control, Mary is assaulted by an unknown man at a party, and she’s left questioning if the enigmatic Michael is truly her hero or if he is the face behind the terrible attack. With every piece of information Mary learns about Michael, her doubts grow deeper, but with every minute she spends in his presence, so does her love.

With the war and her fear threatening to separate Mary and Michael forever, only the death of a friend, a crushing confession, and her own sensibilities can carry her over the threshold between adolescence and adulthood.

My Review
I didn’t grow up in the sixties, but this book opened my eyes to what it may have been like. It was a time of free love and life, but not everything was “groovy” especially for the heroine. I liked the way Mary transitioned and grew during this book. From being a follower to becoming comfortable with who she was and what she needed to make her happy. She epitomized a strong heroine, and she still has years to grow and discover more about herself.

I know this novel is more of a coming of age story, but I’m a huge romance fan and Ms. Constantine put just enough in it to keep me satisfied. Although Michael was "too old" (by way of his life experiences) for Mary’s innocent nature, he was perfect for her. Michael had had a rough few years which had made him grow up faster than he should’ve. And yet when it came to dealing with Mary he didn’t take advantage of her, on the contrary he protected her. It was such a sweet story.

From its psychedelic beginning to its sweet, poignant ending I loved this story.

I give this book five out of five beer can shaped chocolate bars.

I purchased my copy from Amazon.

Excerpt:
“My name is Mary.”
Perceptive eyes smiled at me beneath a layer of lashes.
“Not Bambi.” My disloyal vocal chords warbled.
A breeze ruffled his ebony hair, making him appear like a model posing for Seventeen Magazine. His aristocratic nose led to full lips and a squared, bristly chin. He more than adequately filled out a sleeveless T-shirt detailed with the Steppenwolf band logo “Born to be Wild.” Michael lifted his arms, propping them behind his head. In doing so, he exposed a hint of a flat stomach over his beltline. I tried not to stare. No luck. The guy was visibly out of my league.
“Mary…” he said, his voice buttery sweet. “You look young, like a fawn in headlights with those big eyes and freckles.”
“I’ll be sixteen next week.” Is he being rude?
“Well, then.” His mouth stretched into a charming smirk. “I guess you’re ready for just about anything. Right, Bambi?”

I wanted to slap the smirk off his gorgeous face.

Angel Craze

Do you recall back in the day when everyone started talking about angels? Well, maybe they didn’t start, but they became really popular. The show Touched by an Angel became huge. And Michael Landon played an angel in Highway to Heaven. (Am I dating myself?) Angel paraphernalia was everywhere. I’m sure Hallmark made loads of money.

Angels had been in our awareness, but something happened during that time period to make them more present. And then things died down again about them. Of course the concept of angels will never go away, only because the concept of them are so awesome.

I’ve been reading about angels in novels. Not messenger angels either, but kick ass ones. It got me thinking about what kind of angel I’d be if I were ever called to be one (a lot of laughter coming from this very faulty human). I’ve decided on an archangel – yes, can’t you see it? Archangel Nana. None of this “Hail, I come with glad tidings” for me. I’m the kind who wields a sword and knows how to use it.

Angelic love – good times.

If you’re interested in books with angels in them that I loved, here are some of my recommendations.

Cathrina Constantine – Wickedly They Come, Wickedly They Dream
L. Penelope – Angelborn, AngelFall

Re-release of Wickedly They Come by Cathrina Constantine #urbanfantasy #paranormal

I'm so happy to share that Wickedly They Come has been re-released by the fabulous Cathrina Constantine under a new publisher. Look at that amazing cover!

I reviewed this book when if first came out and loved it. I can only imagine how much more I'll love it with the tweeks she's made.

Click here to read my review.

A Gripping Dark Fantasy!

A Destined Prophecy: “The White Warrior will be one with Lucifer and God will weep.”

Haunting visions and supernatural talents are the norm for the sixteen-year-old warrior, Jordan and her mother Seeley. Together with their formidable angels they find themselves in peril when a wicked sorcerer is determined to fulfill the prophecy to his lord, Lucifer.

After an ominous vision of spirits inhabiting teenagers in a local school, Jordan enrolls in the social culture of teendom at Elma High to combat soulless demons. She encounters Mark, a mysterious new classmate, who is hell bent on keeping her unscathed from the forces of evil.

The fight between Heaven and Hell is escalating—and Earth is their battleground.
Snippet:
Something dripped on Seeley's shoulder. Then a wet dribble skimmed her cheek and landed on Jordan's arm. The wetness was bright red. Raising her head and sucking in her breath Seeley gawked at a large pentagram embedded into the rocky dome. The five pointed star mysteriously sparkled in the flickering light, and a planked balcony bordered the elevated fortification.
As she craned her head directed upward, her bloodcurdling scream split the air. Her knees buckled. "Oh my God! Oh my God! What have they done!"

Review: Snow on Cinders by Cathrina Constantine #dystopia

The Blurb
How far would you go to protect your family?

A peculiar metamorphosis has taken shape since the final days. And the planet is in the throes of healing.

Fulvio McTullan leads his family and a band of misfits to form a new settlement, far from Tallas and it’s nefarious Elites. Their journey takes them into uncharted territories where strange creatures are lurking. It’s a battle of survival, not only from the creatures, but the mutated earth as well.

Meanwhile, Pomfrey Addler, an oppressive Elite squashes the insurrection in Tallas. Suddenly, citizens begin to vanish in the middle of the night and his daughter, Paniess is hell bent on revenge.

Fraught with mishaps, Fulvio finally locates the perfect place to settle. They begin to rebuild until they receive a call. A call which will lure them back into the clutches of Tallas.

My Review

I’ve been waiting for the sequel to Tallas since I finished the book. Don’t worry. If you haven’t read Tallas, you won’t get lost, the author ensures it without bogging those of us who have read it with too many details.

Snow on Cinders is filled with one adventure after another ass the author takes the reader in surprising directions from scene to scene. Before I knew it I was half way through the book because I’d gotten so engrossed.

Fulvio, one of the former Executives of Tallas and an alpha male to the nth power still knew how to get things done. And my favorite blue bear, Tibbles was still awesome.  I loved how she mixed the lives of both the new and old characters into the story.

I’m a huge romance fan so I was happy to read  just enough of it to move the story forward. I was looking forward to a certain love story coming to fruition, but it didn’t. I don’t give spoilers so I won’t tell you whose. You’ll just have to read this fantastic book for yourself and find out.

The characters in this dystopian world are aware of the hardships of their situation. So is Ms. Constantine and she’s not afraid to kill of a character (sniffle) when the scene warrants it (sniffle again).

I purchased this book from Amazon.

I give this book five out of five helicopter shaped chocolate bars.

A Big Fat Slobbered All Over Thank You

Everyone (except those who aren’t in the business) knows that publishing is not a go-it-alone venture. If a writer can become successful without the help of others, then please let me know how. I’d like to take this small opportunity to thank those who have been most helpful in my writing career. Let’s think of this post as my sort of Emmy speech, only I’m not an actress, well I am, but that’s neither here nor there.

  1. Black Opal Books for giving me a chance to publish my books Love Through Time and Love Undercover
  2. Decadent Publishing for taking the chance to publish Midwife to Destiny and soon to be released Destiny Mine
  3. Debbie Christiana – I raise my chocolate up to this wonderful, supportive woman who provides me with pictures of half dressed men to cheer me up, celebrate my birthday, and just for the hell of it.
  4. Empi Baryeh a fabulous writer who has become my mentor, friend and go too woman.
  5. Cathrina Constantine – My awesome friend, beta reader, and review partner. We’ve had so much fun with our dual book reviews.
  6. Kiru Taye- all I can say is that I want to be like her one day.
  7. Zee Monodee- the writer/editor who taught me how to show versus tell. Before her I was like, what the heck does that mean?  She’s made me a better writer.
  8. All of the bloggers who've had me on their blog to gush about my novels. Blowing you huge kisses
  9. My friends who have read my books and given me wonderful feedback. I keep you around for a reason.
  10. To everyone who has ever shared, tweeted, or google plus-ed anything for me.  You have my ultimate thanks.
  11. Last but not least, my blog readers.Where would I be without you? It's not a question worth pondering.

Of course the list could go on into the millions but I’ll end here.

Any shout out of gratitude you’d like to make?
