Do you have the makings of a good #review #blog?

Book review blogs are those wonderful sites like The Jeep Diva  and Book Swagger  that review books  almost on a daily basis. These sites are awesome.  Of course they present book spotlights, blog hops, guest posts, and giveaways every once in a while but their main focus is reviewing books.

My blog would make a horrible book review site.  I love reviewing books  but there are some things I’m lacking to make it a good review blog. Of course I’m going to list them because lists rock.

1. The ability to read 2-3 books a week.

I’m a slow reader, if I read one book a week I think I’ve done a good job. Other than reading slowly, life likes to intercept, decreasing my reading time even more. If all I did was post reviews I’d post every other week or so. This does not make for a good review site.

2. Letting authors request reviews.

Often times you see a disclaimer on the blog saying that the reviewer will give an honest opinion, even if the opinion is not positive. I can’t do that. I sometimes feel bad when I give a book a three rating, and three means I liked the book. When I read a book, I desire to love it not just like it. There is no way I would publish a less than three rating, which means I would have wasted my one book for the week leaving my blog blank.

3. Willingness to reject reading some books.

Not even the fastest reader can go through every book put before them. Some of them have to be rejected. No matter how many times it’s happened, rejection hurts. I neither like to receive nor give it.

4. Review partners.

Not all book review blogs have more than one reviewer, but it helps with exposing more books to the world. Right now it’s just little ole me running my blog.

These are things I believe make a book review blog successful. Is there anything else that makes a great book review site in your opinion?

  1. Reading quickly is a definite requirement for running a review site. I also like those that review a variety of books, not just those from a specific genre.

  3. This is an interesting take on why you wouldn't make a good book blog. I was expecting a list of 'do this.' FWIW, i think it looks like you have a lovely blog here :)
