F is for Fight Scenes

In life I’m pretty much a pacifist. I would rather deal with issues through non-violent means than to fight. That being said I’ll let you know that I’m a first degree black belt and I can kick ass if the occasion arises. Luckily for me, or should I say other people, the occasion has never arisen.
Because of my training I know the movements involved when fighting and I pay close attention to the actual moves being written in a fight scene.

In Love Through Time, my debut novel, to be released this year (shameless plug), the heroine Jasmine Gibson has some serious fighting skills and she has no qualms about using them. In my opinion (and I created her), she gets a little out of hand with the fighting at times, but she does it to protect the innocent and out of necessity. Or was it to have some fun? Either way she can and does kick ass repeatedly throughout the book.

Even as a martial artist the fight scenes were not easy for me to write. Performing something is far different from writing it and I had to do research on the topic. When I eventually finished writing my scene I sat back exhausted, but satisfied.

What book do you find has an awesome fight scene?

I’ll start first. The Princess Bride (yes I read the book, the movie was more than fantastic), the sword fight between Wesley (The Dread Pirate Roberts) and Inigo Montoya. Hhheeellloo. My name is ...

  1. Nana, what an adorable kitty pic. Wow, you have a black belt, awesome. I hope you never have to use it, too. And I agree with you about fight scenes in movies and books, they'll enthralling.

    1. I love the picture, as horrible as it is to think of them fighting.

    1. It's hard to make physical contact with a kick from an ocean away so I'm pretty sure you're safe Debbie.

  3. I am so impressed--a black belt. You do "sound" like a gentle person in your writing. :-)

Favorite fight scene in a book? Oh, I'd have to say in Rosemary Sutcliff's "Sword at Sunset". I was glued to the pages, just fascinated by the descriptions of a warfare that was ancient in weapons and style.

  6. I had to write some swordfighting scenes for a novel I've written, and it involved a lot of research. I'll bet having a background in martial arts helped a lot. Although as you said, there is more to writing a fight scene than knowing the moves.

    1. I think sword scenes might be more difficult than hand on hand combat. The movement has to be so fluid.
